Catholic canon lawyer Peter Vere and I have co-authored a new book critiquing the claims and controversies of extreme traditionalism that will come out in September, published by Our Sunday Visitor Publishing.
Written in a popular and accessible style, More Catholic Than the Pope provides a detailed analysis of and response to common arguments raised by extreme traditionalist Catholics (in particular, adherents of the Society of St. Pius X) against the Second Vatican Council, Pope John Paul II, the fact that the late Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre committed a schismatic act by illicitly ordaining four bishops in 1988, and more. Chapters include a history of the SSPX, a background on the controversy between the SSPX and the so-called "Conciliar Church," and answers to several standard canon-law and historical arguments often raised by extreme traditionalists.
Our hope is that, by God's grace, the evidence presented in this new 224-page book will inform, encourage, and strengthen Catholics who have been shaken or confused by the misguided arguments raised against the Catholic Church by some extreme traditionalists and, with regard to those who have adopted a schismatic mindset, that this book will help them recognize the errors of extreme traditionalist groups, help them to see why they should abandon those errors, and help them come home to the Catholic Church.

Father Stephan Zigrang is a canon lawyer and he's head and shoulders above Vere, in canon law, morality and humility.

You are so right. I know many traditionalists who are in a constant state of frenzy because of the bazaar stories printed in the Remnant and the Wanderer. I imagine the stories have a grain of truth but these papers sensationalize the stories so much that I feel like I am reading the Enquirer. The only problem is that these papers are gossiping against our beloved Church.
I think the traditionalists probably feel very conflicted after reading all of these papers. I know I do when I read them.

It's Peter's barque all right--but why is he ordering his crew to drill holes through the bulkheads? Why is he steering in the wrong direction, ignoring the maps of previous captains? Why are so many of his officers smoking grass and kissing cabin boys instead of manning the ship? Why have the faithful been locked in steerage without anything nourishing to eat? Inquiring minds want to know...
Rome keeps trying, as does the SSPX, but too many want the gap to remain. There are those to whom the status quo is a good thing. Others have more pecuniary motives.
One billion Catholics? You call that impressive? Hell, we've got countless billions--starting from Pentecost, right through the conversion of Constantine, past the Council of Trent, right through the French Revolution and right up to Pius XII. That's a lot of traditional Catholics! And not one of them ever attended the Novus Ordo or worshiped the Great Thumb or kissed the Koran!

Hunthausen of Seattle has approved recipes for Eucharistic bread containing salt, oils (oil, shortening, butter or margarine) sweetenings {e.g. honey, brown sugar, molasses), baking soda or baking powder. He also says milk may be substituted for water. His approval came in a reply dated March 4th to inquiries of certain members of his Seattle Archdiocese. He told the inquirers that he was author of a statement showing regret over an advertisement by CUF chapter on the question. Another interesting inquiry is the suppression of the Uniate Rites in the USA. That happened long ago (well before V2), and still has resentments in many ethnic communities.
