NEW HAVEN, Conn., May 20 /Christian Newswire/ -- The Knights of Columbus Museum, located at 1 State St. in New Haven, will honor the 500th anniversary of the death of Christopher Columbus on Saturday, May 20, by exhibiting an extremely rare proof set of commemorative stamps from 1883 and offering free refreshments.
On display will be the entire set of 16 stamps depicting the life of Columbus and his voyage to the Americas released by the U.S. Postal Service in 1883. It was the first ever commemorative set to be issued by the Postal Service.
The stamps were first released at the World Columbian Exhibition in Chicago from May – October, 1883. The set of proof stamps will be displayed in the museum’s Columbus Gallery, which includes several items depicting the famous navigator’s life as well as two ceramic tiles which were brought to the New World by Columbus during his second voyage to America in 1493. Also on display is a bust of Columbus made by Giovanni Quinzio – who fought with Garibaldi – to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Columbus’s first voyage.
The exhibit will run both Saturday, May 20, and Sunday, May 21, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission and parking are free.
The Knights of Columbus was named for the explorer in 1882 – during an anti-Catholic period in our nation’s history – because Columbus was universally acclaimed at that time as a national hero. He was also Catholic.
The connection to Columbus was thus a means of connecting Catholics to the history of the United States at a time when Catholics were routinely marginalized and denied full access to job opportunities and social advancement.
Columbus first discovered the New World in 1492. He made three additional voyages west between 1493 and 1504 and is widely credited with opening the continents of North and South America to European exploration.
Founded in 1882 in New Haven, the Knights of Columbus is the world's largest lay Catholic organization with more than 1.7 million members in the Americas, Europe and Asia.

I post to you from beautiful downtown Ocean City, MD, during the second day of the 108th Annual Maryland State Council Convention of the Knights of Columbus. I serve my Council this year as Delegate to the Convention.

Our Texas state convention is this weekend as well. One of the building contractors I'm using (big work project) is the GK of my old council. He's headed out of town...but I can't go. I have business travel that's taking me out of state for the week.
Good Grief, how long are we going to perpetuate this myth?
Even Columbus knew the continents were here - he had access to the maps and records of the Vikings voyages up and down the eastern seaboard, and their settlements in Greenland = and many other previous voyages - Sir Henry Sinclair, Jarl of Orkney, Scotland sailed, with many ships to Nova Scotia almost 100 years (1398) before Columbus sailed the ocean blue - (and he was, say the experts, Genoese, not Italian.
Columbus set out to find a new route - between the continents - to the Indies...etc etc etc

The article said "Columbus first discovered the new world in 1492." I think that can be taken to mean that he first found it for himself in 1492. Much like you could say that I first discovered mole enchiladas in 1995...but I'm not the one who invented the dish.
One of the greatest men who ever lived! IMO 12 October 1492 is more important in human history that 20 July 1969!
I think the man ought to be canonized! Some say that because he fathered a child out of wedlock that is an impediment but a number of saints had children without being married like St Augustine and St Magaret of Cortona!
Back on 12 October 1992 I had the daily mass that day in my parish offered for the great Columbus!

My daughter was selected as Queen of the Knights locally a few years ago.Her little sister Mary got mad so every time Rachael was in the parade the Knights gave special permission for Mary to ride with her:)
