Mitt Romney isn't the only casualty in his failed presidential bid. The Mormon church, yearning for broad acceptance, also took a beating.
Extremists denounced Romney's campaign as a Mormon plot to take over the country. Some Evangelicals feared that a Mormon in the White House would draw more converts to his faith.
Mormon practices were picked apart, even ones that had been abandoned long ago such as polygamy. Romney tried to focus on politics, but was often asked about sacred Mormon undergarments.
"It is prejudice," said Richard Bushman, an emeritus professor at Columbia University, who is a leading historian and devout Mormon. "Underlying all these questions is that these beliefs are basically crazy so you've got to explain them to us."

"I was surprised at the level of intensity and sometimes flat out animosity," said Lowell C. Brown, a Los Angeles attorney who is Mormon. "I had no idea. I'm in my 50s, I've been a Mormon all my life, I've lived in L.A. for 25 years, and it floored me."
Many Christians said they were raising legitimate theological concerns, not Mormon-bashing.
The news service of the Southern Baptist Convention, which considers the LDS church a cult, ran a six-part series through December explaining why they don't consider Mormonism to be Christian.

Mormons were especially outraged when GOP presidential contender Mike Huckabee, a Southern Baptist pastor, asked whether Mormons consider Jesus and the devil brothers. Latter-day Saints say Huckabee's question is usually raised by those who wish to smear the Mormon faith rather than clarify doctrine.

It's served as a kind of wakeup call for Saints themselves to the fact that we're not as well understood as we think we are. How can it be the case that Gov. Romney and his feelings about Christ and his feelings about religion have been so little understood?
Geez.....Mitt’s religion was about 20th on the list of reasons he lost.
No, it was a real reason, esp in the south among the baptists who tend to be bigoted.
I have seen two postings on FR from people that refer to Mormonism as a cult.
“Geez.....Mitts religion was about 20th on the list of reasons he lost.”
I totally agree with that. I think he just came across as being to fake, plastic, and being a serial flip-flopper.
I think he is probably a great guy and nice as hell, but that dog didn’t hunt for other reasons outside of his Mormonism.
I seem to recall the same claims when Kennedy ran about Kennedy's Catholic faith.
It is a sad fact that a lot of people who are supposed to be Christians were anything but Christian to Romney and those who supported him. There will be those who try to say his religion was not part of their animosity but I saw it for myself on FR.
Yeah, I guess you are right. It had nothing to do with the fact Mitt flipped on virtually every issue during the last year. We just hate Mormons. That's it.
He lost because of his political positions past and present.
There just seem to be many "oh poor me", LDS. "No body likes me, think I'll eat some worms...."
It is getting boring.
He got a heck of alot more votes than The Huckster so that must speak volumes as to what a fake he is.
As an Evangelical Christian, I personally know some people didn’t vote for him because of his religion and if people were intellectually honest, more would admit to it.
I agree. And I wonder how these same people would be if a Jewish person was running.
maybe only two postings but many, many comments on threads. The same people who feel that way probably wouldn't vote for a Catholic, a Jew, or a Seventh Day Adventist either. The MSM kept it in the forefront of every interview. The DBM did not want Romney as the candidate.
Juan Williams on FoxNews Sunday was positively giddy about the prospect of McCain as the candidate. He is the Dems canary in the coal mine, testing sound bites, etc. for NPR (aka Dem party). Soon we will see the attacks on McCain from the DBM.
I also remember Gov George Romney, Mitt
s Dad going through the same stuff when he briefly ran for Pres. as well.
You are right about that. Romney Care, state funded abortions, gay boy scouts, a record of running away from Reagan. Romney’s religion certainly wasn’t the primary reason. Simpletons who wish to dismiss his critical flaws find that an easy escape route from rational thought. I do wonder if a Scientologist could be President.
Mormons were especially outraged when GOP presidential contender Mike Huckabee, a Southern Baptist pastor, asked whether Mormons consider Jesus and the devil brothers.

Didnt Huckabee ask this TEN years ago ????
Why are the mormons still mad ???
This is part of their doctrine...
