You’ll never meet a drunk who regretted getting sober at last. Will-power can’t work against alcoholism. It’s the surrendering of self-will and finding a whole new view of life that works. If ever there was proof of a loving, personal God, reconciled with us through Jesus Christ, it’s the true alcoholic who has had the obsession taken away.
I drank morning, noon, and night everyday for 25 years, just to stay ahead of a hangover and any realization of the seriousness of my soul-sickness. Now I am three years sober. And ever vigilant, always praying that God let me know his will for me, and to give me the power to carry it out.
It is a spirituality through moral inventory and amends.
Alcoholics have no idea what it’s like to feel well. They’ve forgotten. A lucky few realize they must work the 12 steps sequentially and then again, as a life-style. It’s a life-time commitment but as I say, no one who sticks with it ever regrets it.
Google the AA Promises for inspiration.
I spent at least five years as an alcoholic and only made up my mind once and for all to quit when I suddenly came to my senses behind the wheel of my car on the freeway headed to San Diego. I had no idea of how I had got there or what I was doing. It scared me witless.
I will certainly lift my prayers for anyone and everyone fighting this terrible demonic posession (which is the way it seemed to me) and I do recommend both Al-Anon and AA. Once I started attending I discovered there were six women in my place of employment who also attended and we were able to be supportive of one another on the quiet, to all of our consolation.
This can be overcome, but it cannot be overcome overnight. I pray for strength for the journey for both of you. Keep us posted.
