Archbishop Burke Slams Obama's Appearance at Notre Dame

One of the Vatican's highest ranked clerics and a frequent critic of President Obama said Friday that Notre Dame is causing a "scandal" by giving the president an honorary degree and a platform to address graduates at its commencement next weekend.

'The proposed granting of an honorary doctorate at Notre Dame University to our president, who is so aggressively advancing an anti-life and anti-family agenda, is rightly the source of the greatest scandal," said Archbishop Raymond Burke, who is the prefect of the Apostolic Signatura, the Vatican's highest court.

Burke, the former archbishop of St. Louis and vocal opponent of giving communion to politicians who support abortion rights, told Catholics at a national prayer breakfast in Washington, D.C., that "with unparalleled arrogance, our nation is choosing to renounce its foundation on the faithful."

He pointed to several Obama administration decisions that he said have damaged "the fundamental society that is the family," citing the repeal of the conscience clause, which prohibits health care workers from refusing to participate in abortion-related services; repeal of the Mexico City policy, which allows federal funding to be used abroad to provide abortions; presidential support of the Freedom of Choice Act, which prevents government from in any way denying or interfering with a woman's right to choose; and support of the U.S. Population Fund, which he noted supports China's one-child policy.

They are giving him an honorary degree?

I didn’t really understand not letting the President speak because he disagrees with one of the church’s principles (for example Presidents Reagan, Bsuh41 and Bush43 disagreed with the church on the death penalty)....

But they sure don’t need to give him an honorary degree - that’s basically an endorsement.

That has been at the heart of the scandal. The speaking part has been secondary.

Didn't the Good Archbishop hear that 67% of his flock approve of Obama's job performance in a recent poll?

Mary Ann Glendon, a conservative pro-lifer who turned down an award from the University of Notre Dame because she disagrees with the school's decision to invite President Obama to deliver this year's commencement address.

So, now the pro-life groups now need to “create an applicant” who spews the same views of obama and applies to attend ND. When they don’t grant them admission based on his anti-prolife position, then we call GOTCHA.

Hey republicans, it’s called hard ball and you need to start learning how to play it.

Yes he did, and bemoans the fact in the course of the speech.

In the Catholic Church, unlike for example the Episcopal Church where such matters depend on a show at hands at a triennial Convention, truth is not determined by majority opinion.

In fact, often enough, when you have a majority of “the world” agreeing with you, it’s an indication that you’ve strayed from the truth.

Example: After the discourse on the Bread of Life, the majority OF DISCIPLES rejected the teaching of Christ’s presence in the Eucharist “and walked with him no more” (John 6:66). And when Pilate presented Jesus to the crowd at his Passion, the majority opted for Barabbas.

“All may / some do / none must” may be the doctrinal criterion of some denominations, but not of Roman Catholicism.

(for example Presidents Reagan, Bsuh41 and Bush43 disagreed with the church on the death penalty)....

The Church teaches that the state has the right to impose the penalty of capital punishment.

You confuse Church teaching with the prudential statements, which are not Church teaching, of some members of the episcopacy.

Commencementspeakers are normally give honorary degrees. Exceptions occur, but the degree normally goes with the speech. That’s why it’s so easy for the Lying Media to label this a “commencement speech” occasion and obscure the real issue. Do a survey of news stories about big name commencement speakers and see how often the honorary degree part is mentioned and how prominently. It will be mentioned in many instances, but buried deep in the story, rarely in the headline or the lede.

There is a world of difference between the Church's teaching on the death penalty and on legalized prenatal infant slaughter.

Ppeople who have fallen away from the evangelical or Protestant churches tend to either identify themselves as "protestant" or "unaffiliated" or something like that.

Catholics, because of a strong cultural identity, tend to identify themselves as Catholic even if they haven't been to mass since they were kids. Those people are lumped in with the practicing Catholics in order to arrive at that number. Obama's support among weekly mass attenders was much smaller.

The Church lost a lot of people during the 70's and 80's, due to the haphazard Vatican II reforms and the poor teaching of the children during those years. As a convert, I was shocked that some of the things I knew about the Church and her teachings was unknown to cradle Catholics in my own parish.

Thankfully, things are beginning to turn around, but the Barque of Peter is a large ship, which turns slowly. It will probably be another 10 years before things are really squared away. The Holy Gather is a true blessing to us, and may he live long years more and confound those who want to wreck the Church.
