The secrets surrounding the Holy Shroud
Rome Reports ^ | April 3, 2010

Posted on 04/03/2010 10:13:43 AM PDT by NYer

April 3, 2010. Turin will play host to the Holy Shroud between April 10th and May 23rd. More than one million people have made reservations to visit. More than 4 thousand volunteers are helping with artistic exhibitions, movies and informative panels.

The origin and the authenticity of the Holy Shroud are still big mysteries. Mysteries that scientists, physicist, biologists and archaeologists have still not been able to solve.

Andrea Tornielli
Author, ‘Sindone, inchiesta sul mistero’

“Science will continue to study the Holy Shroud because there’s new technology like high-definition photography that can perhaps help reveal new information.”

Emanuela Marinelli
Holy Shroud Expert

“If the DNA of the blood on the Holy Shroud is the same as the one found on the cloth in Oviedo, that would be a big revelation. That’s why I believe we need to keep investigating.”

But, there are some facts that point to the authenticity of the Holy Shroud. For example, this type of cloth was used by wealthy people because their bodies were laid to rest in mass graves. According to the Gospel, Joseph of Arimathea, a rich man, is the person who gave Jesus’ body a proper burial.

Traces of aloe, myrrh and 70 types of pollen have also been found on the linen. Three-quarters of these plants grow exclusively in the Middle East near Jerusalem.

According to the drops of blood, the contact between the body and the cloth lasted for 36 hours, the amount of time according to the Gospel between Jesus’ death and resurrection.

That’s why perhaps the most significant aspect of the linen is that it helps explains Jesus’ crucifixion.

Andrea Tornielli
Author, ‘Sindone, inchiesta sul mistero’

“The large amount of bilirubin in blood indicates that he had a violent death, that he sweated blood just as it’s described in the Gospels, and that his suffering is indescribable.”

Emanuela Marinelli
Holy Shroud Expert

“According to the Holy Shroud, he suffered 120  lashes with the call flagrum, which had three strings, and each one had two pieces of sharpened bone, which tore skin. Therefore, every blow would cause six injuries. 120 lashes equals 720 wounds.”

Jesus had a wooden plank attached from his hand to his foot, as he walked to the place he was crucified.  The remains of dirt found on the cloth near his nose and his knees would be confirm that he fell to the ground several times.

According to scientists it’s very likely he died from a heart attack. That’s why some say he shouted on the cross before he died and water and blood flowed out after a soldier pierced his side with a spear. Details supported by evidence taken from the Shroud.

Authentic or not, the shroud helps to better understand the last moments of Jesus' life and that’s why Pope Benedict XVI will visit the shroud May 2nd.

I’m torn between believing this is real, or that Da Vinci created it.

"I’m torn between believing this is real, or that Da Vinci created it."

The Bible tells us the body of Jesus was wrapped in multiple pieces of cloth and that his head was wrapped in a separate cloth from those which shrouded his body. I think it's a middle age fake.

Are pieces of “The True Cross” also being exhibited? Is the actual written document setting forth “Constantine’s Donation” finally being shown?

For me, I try to look at the facts without wanting to come to any particular conclusion. So far I’m not convinced one way or the other.

Watch “The Face of Jesus” on the History Channel. It’s on tonight and tomorrow. Very good analysis on the shroud.

“the body of Jesus was wrapped in multiple pieces of cloth and that his head was wrapped in a separate cloth from those which shrouded his body.”

It seems clear from a study of scripture and definitions of words used in the Greek that a long piece of linen, such as the shroud was used length-wise to cover his body, this piece was folded at the head. A separate piece was used as a head covering. Then a piece or pieces were used to ‘spiral wrap’ the body to hold the shroud in place. This does not support a conclusion that it is a middle age fake.

You need to watch the History Channel 2 hour program about the Shroud of Turn that was televised this past Tuesday. The goal of the show was to create an image of what Jesus, (to skeptics, the man in the shroud) looked like. One of the people from the Shroud of Turin Research project said that there was no paint of any type on the shroud.

It was a really good and unbiased show.

The Bible tells us the body of Jesus was wrapped in multiple pieces of cloth and that his head was wrapped in a separate cloth from those which shrouded his body. I think it's a middle age fake.

Where does the Bible say multiple pieces of cloth were used?

Also, did you happen to watch the recent 2-hour show called THE REAL FACE OF JESUS? It was very interesting and went into more detail than I've yet seen on the shroud. In addition to it matching so many aspects of Jesus's last day, one of the most compelling arguments to me is the fact that no one can explain HOW it could have been made by man. There's no pigment of any kind. The darkening (that creates the image) is only two micro-fibers deep. I recommend checking out the show.

Thanks for the ping. More and more evidence points to the conclusion that it is the shroud in which Jesus was buried.

The Shroud pre-dates Davinci so he could not have created it.

The image is a negative, nobody in the middle ages had any concept of a negative image.

The image contains 3d holographic information.

The image is contained only in the very outer fibers on both sides of the cloth, it was not inked in.

The image shows every last detail of Jesus’s scourging and crucifixion, front and back, even the fine marks caused by the specific type of Roman whip used during the time, and scars caused by the crown of thorns.

The Shroud is the most studied human artifact of all time, using the most modern scientific instruments available. If it was a fake it would have been clearly identified as such by now. But that is not what is happening as studies continue, what is happening is the discovery of more and more evidence that it is authentic.

Watch the History channel special, and watch the video “The Fabric of Time”, for all the latest info on the Shroud. The chance that it is a fake is somewhere from zero to none.

"Where does the Bible say multiple pieces of cloth were used?"

John Chapter 20 refers several times to linen wrappings (plural) "and the face cloth, which had been on his head, not lying with the linen wrappings, but rolled up in a place by itself" 20:7 This is not consistent with the single piece shroud of Turin.
