Jesus would not have appeared to this rabbi unless he was a very holy man, possibly one who wanted to live to see the Messiah, possibly one who made this his chief prayer as he grew older and older, possibly one who asked for the truth about the Messiah whatever it might turn out to be.
It reminds me of the man in the temple who recognized the baby Jesus and rejoiced that he saw the Messiah before he died.
We don’t actually know who appeared to this man.
Nevertheless, the guy sat on the supposed information. Lot of good that did. Something about a bushel?
