Dropping the pass is on him, and he should be thankfully that he is able to play a sport for a living.
Just one dropped ball? He had better hope only the fans and media heard his rant or he could end up with a career ending injury next week - and then end up spending all his money on health care. This guy will join Jesse Jackson as a post NFL pastor....
I don’t disagree with the post. But maybe we can cut the guy a break also.
King David said some pretty strong things about God. Yet he was a man after God’s own heart and reached a level of oneness with God that most believers never do.
So I am not going to judge this football player for his one statement.
Sounds like he only praises God when everything is going his way. Oh and never blame yourself.
We drop passes (or fumble... or toss an interception...)everyday. What matters is not what made us goof up but how we respond when we do.
Johnson did not respond well.
If God made him drop that pass, it was probably to teach him humility. The lesson may need to be repeated, since it’s clear he didn’t get it.
I think his response is fine, though perhaps a bit over-passionate. The Lord *is* sovereign, and very well could have confounded this man’s catch. Some day he may learn the reason — probably to humble him and glorify Him.
Absolutely - I doubt that God is really concerned with whether this dude catches the pass or not.
Words I need to remember every waking moment.
He must be a liberal. He thinks it’s God’s fault.
Yes, this was a good message for all of us who try to formulate earthly success. I understand Johnson’s anger, I truly do, even though I disagree with it. If he was raised on a prosperity gospel, as are many, the belief is that if you walk the walk, you’ll get the blessings and that’s not the guarantee He offers.
The player I feel worse for is the kicker for Boise St. which had been undefeated and close to making it to a BCS bowl. Tied late in the game, his team connected on a “hail mary” pass with :02 left at the Nevada eight-yard line. The kicker just needs to hit a short field goal, not much longer than an extra point, to win the game and keep his school undefeated.
But he missed to the right.
That sent the game to overtime and the kicker had a chance to fix his mistake with another short field goal opportunity.
But he missed to the left.
Nevada’s freshman walk-on kicker then knocked through his field goal try to win the game. Other than greatly disappointed and feeling terrible about the loss, we don’t know what that kicker might have tweeted. But I hope he had more sense than to post what Steve Johnson did.
This guy didn’t know God is a Steelers fan. J/K
I’m not in a position to judge, but I’m sure this guy is full of regret now. On a related note, I think the most powerful scene in Forrest Gump is when Lt Dan (Gary Sinise) rages aginst God in the midst of a storm and then makes peace with him. The scene at the wedding when he has new legs and a new bride affirms this.
I always figure you can’t pray to God for victory (in a game) because God looks on us and the other team just the same. What you CAN do is pray God to help you be all you can be and the best you can be. That is all you can ask.
He does say “THANX THO” at the end. Sort of like he catches himself, but it’s too late to stop himself from mashing that send button.
