Latin Mass Petition - Des Moines, Iowa

Hello Catholic FReepers.

I have just created an online petition regarding the Latin Mass in Des Moines, Iowa.

There is currently ONE Latin Mass celebrated in the entire Diocese of Des Moines; in the basement of St. Anthony's Catholic Church. The petition is asking to have the Mass moved up to the Sanctuary where it belongs.

The petition states:

We, the undersigned, appeal to Monsignor Frank E. Chiodo to move the Tridentine Latin Mass, currently celebrated in the basement of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Des Moines, Iowa, and restore it to its proper place, the main sanctuary of the church. As this is the only Latin Mass celebrated in the Diocese of Des Moines, we request this Mass to be celebrated each Sunday morning and all Holy Days of Obligation.

In accordance with Pope Benedict XVI’s Motu Proprio Summorum Pontificum and the subsequent Instruction “Universae Ecclesiae,” the Mass is to be afforded the same dignity and stature as the Ordinary Form; by not having the Extraordinary Form celebrated in the main church, we feel that the proper exposure to the Mass is being hindered.

In an effort to pass on Tradition, we are deeply concerned about teaching our children the proper reverence for the Blessed Sacrament in the Tabernacle. We are indeed enthusiastic that by celebrating the Tridentine Latin Mass in a space befitting its sublime beauty and holiness, that attendance will increase and people will become more deeply rooted in their faith.

We pray to the Lord, our God, that restoration may be made, through Christ, our Lord, and with the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Amen.

If you're from Iowa, have ever been to Iowa, are a tradtional Catholic, or are just sympathetic to our cause, please sign our petition. The only requirements are your name and email address (which you can choose to keep private,)comments are optional.

Thanks in advance.

No, there are currently hundreds of Latin rite masses being celebrated in the diocese of Des Moines. There is only ONE pre-Vatican II Tridentine latin mass being celebrated.

Ok fine. I generally don’t care to argue semantics, but thanks for the clarification. Our priest actually refers to it as the “ancient usage.” It’s the Mass of his childhood, so I guess that makes him ancient. =]

“....in the basement of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church.”

.
The most venerable rite of celebrating the Eucharist that was held in the highest esteem for centuries by many saints before Vatican II is now relegated to the basement, while in the sanctuary they’re holding hands and attend Mass in shorts, tanktops and flip-flops?

This is one of the many reasons the RCC is in trouble.

I agree. Fr. loves the TLM, but he loves not rocking the boat even more. He has told us before that if he were to change the Mass schedule and remove one of the NO Masses upstairs, we’d find his body hung from the bell tower.

He’s not afraid of us traddies though. Isn’t that interesting....?

Well, to be perfectly honest, anyone born after 1962 didn't grow up with the Tridentine Mass (that includes me), so it's no exaggeration to say it's ancient to most Catholics today. Assuming someone was 10 years old when they replaced the Tridentine Mass with the Mass of Pope Paul VI (old enough where they would have pretty solid memories of it), that would make them 59 years old today. It's hard to "miss" something if you've never experienced it.

>> This is one of the many reasons the RCC is in trouble. << <<

Oh, come on. That sounds like one of those liberal media headlines "RCC in trouble -- hundreds leaving over refusal to ordain women!!". They're always be disgruntled people unhappy with the current direction of the church. You can't please everyone. Some will balk the church has become too conservative and some will balk the church has become too liberal. The Catholic Church now has over 1 billion members, the largest organized religion. It's not "in trouble" compared to the zillions of protestant churches constantly failing apart at the seems and erupting in civil wars.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a big fan of the Mass of Pope Paul VI and find it to be boring and spiritually unfulfilled and lacking in reverence. The solution is I drive about 35 mins. every Sunday to attend a Byzantine-rite Catholic church. Alternatives are always readily available. There are also many types of masses besides the current Roman rite and the Tridentine mass.

I don’t know where you live, but that isn’t the case here. Here we have the ONE TLM, a couple of reverently celebrated NO’s and then what my friend refers to as the novus bozos. Not much of an alternative for those us in flyover country.

We do drive 3 hours round trip once a month to an FSSP parish Omaha. But wow, does that add up.

Hopefully, with the updating of the NO liturgy English come at the end of the year or on the 1st Sunday of Advent, hopefully a renewed since of reverence will start to come into play.

We have masses from Saturday evening through Sunday evening. They added a Latin Mass at 1, where there was a spot. Your church is so busy they cannot add one Mass? People come from miles around.

Is your Bishop hostile to the TLM? If not, have him contact Cardinal Burke about getting the Institute for Christ the King Sovereign Priest to assign a pastor for a parish dedicated to the Extraordinary Form. We have four such parishes in Wisconsin which offer daily masses. The priests also assist other parishes to institute regular Sunday EF masses. Illinois has 3 such parishes and Missouri has 2. So there is a lot of activity in the region--the provincial headquarters is in Chicago.

I have been attending St. Stanislaus in Milwaukee since April. The priests I have encountered have been excellent as pastors as well as liturgically profound.

Well here’s the thing, Fr. has said he could have the Latin Mass on Sat evening.

The problem is back in the old days, you didn’t go to Mass on Sat evening. So no, we don’t want to do that.

He could have the TLM late on Sunday, after 1pm. That poses its own problems for families with small children; naptimes, crabbiness, even for the kids, etc etc. (I was trying to be funny there, did you catch that?? hahaha) We’re willing to compromise, still...how do I say this.... Why do the traddies always have to compromise for time and space whilst the progressives whine and threaten and get what they want?

Without naming names, our bishop is hostile. He welcomed the POTUS at a private family home and even posted the event on facebook. I’ve got a few hear-say conversations, but won’t post them. There will be no FSSP or certainly no SSPX here. We are truly lucky to have what we have. I almost felt guilty for creating the petition, simply for the fact that if enough people complain, the bishop could send our priest to the hinterlands, leaving us with nothing...other than to drive to Omaha every Sunday.

You’re doing better than us in our Diocese of Greensburg, Pa. We are still the only diocese in Pa without a Sunday Mass :-(

He could send your priest to the hinterlands, however, the UE is an end run around the bishops. No bishop wants to see a bunch of complaints to Rome about him not allowing the TLM. You can complain to Rome if he is non-responsive. Just do it. The ICKSP will ordain 4 men this month, just sayin’.

The EF Mass I attend with my parents is at 3:30 on Sunday afternoon.

That was the only time it could fit into the schedule of Masses.

We make it though.

Another parish 30 miles away has a High Mass at 6:00 pm on Sunday.

The 1 pm one works well for our church. We go to the 7:30 am one, and 1 is not great, but the church is packed every Sunday. I don’t think anyone would have been comfortable moving one of the morning masses out to make way for a Latin Mass. We have a beautiful choir too.
