What started as a residential theft has turned into a potentially significant discovery of historical religious artwork in Tennessee.
"This is a unique thing that is hard to put a dollar figure on, but could be potentially priceless in terms of history. It is a portrait of Jesus from the Veil of Veronica that was blessed by the Pope in the 19th century," said Bivens.
"There is not a lot specifically about Veronica in the scriptures, but tradition tells the story of how she wiped the face of Jesus with a cloth while he was carrying the cross," said Father David Boettner with the Diocese of Knoxville. "His image, the image of the face of Jesus, appeared in that cloth."
The seized portrait appears to be one of a series of reproduced images from the Veil of Veronica that were commissioned and blessed by Pope Leo XIII. The linen artwork features a wax seal stamped with the ring of the Pope.
"More than likely, the art dates back to somewhere between 1860 and the late 1890s. That wax seal is a seal of authentication that the artwork was part of a devotion attributed to the burial cloth that touched the face of Jesus," said Boettner. "The custom was to touch an original veil to these other works of art that were in the spirit of the actual cloth."

Ave Maria, gratia plena, Dominus te cum. Sancta Maria, Mater Dei, ora pro nobis.
It appears Pope Leo XIII asserts male pattern baldness ran in the Jesus family. But there does seem to be some conflict here.
Then again Leo may have a conflict of interest.
Who knew?
How many items of unimaginable historic significance have I taken to the dump? One thing looks like another through eyes that do not understand intrinsic value.
Isa 53:3 He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were [our] faces from Him; He was despised, and we esteemed Him not.
IIsa 53:4 Surely He hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem Him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted
(Not likely to find any pictures that make Him attractive.)
There were many iconic paintings done for churches hundreds of years ago - their origin is the Face in the Shroud of Turin - and they are all very similar - the differences being only from the different artists hand....but the same Face, hair, beard, etc - is there. Some even have 3 wisps of hair on the forehead that artists took from the Shroud image, mistaking the marks left on the forehead by blood as hair.
My favorite of the Iconic paintings is the famous Pantocrator, painted in 550 AD - match it up with the Face from the Shroud. This and hundreds of others were painted hundreds of years before Leonardo or Michelangelo. (As was a painting showing the full Shroud cloth being shown, draped from a balcony.

this VERY bad painting, on this thread, is just that - some untalented soul in the 1800’s doing their best - which is bad.
Inside the envelope, said to be from St. Matthew's Churches in Oklahoma, is an oversized sheet of paper bearing a lavender image of an eyes-closed Jesus. Identified as a prayer rug, it asks the recipient to kneel on the paper, meditate on a blessing - and then notice whether Jesus' eyes appear to have opened. (This seems less a matter of divine intervention than a skillfully rendered optical illusion.)
I know why the Catholics dropped the graven images Commandment from the 10 Commandments and broke the 10th Commandment into two to get a new ten.
“The True Face of Jesus Christ:”
YOu need to adddress the headline with the reporter who wrote the article or the editor. It’s always a good idea to read the article - it would have saved you a lot of time.
A simply amazing comparison study. One wonders why no one thought of that before...
“St. Matthew’s Churches is led by James Eugene Ewing, a one-time traveling preacher of the tent-revival variety, says Anthony, whose organization gained national attention after helping ABC’s “Primetime” expose televangelist Robert Tilton as a fraud. Anthony says Tilton and Ewing were collaborators.”
I think you know there’s no relationship. Nice try. :)
Thereagain perhaps you didn’t read the article either...

Sorry, I’ve got no idea what you’re talking about...
One interesting and sensible thread. Thanks. In a hurry but looking forward to reading it later.
Sorry, missed your beautiful post...

Amen

When I think of the things my parents and relatives discarded in their time... I’ve got a sister who collects antiques - she’s got an old ship mirror worth a small fortune. I saw the same mirror, only smaller, in a B’lyn museum. Me, not so much.
How about that. He plucked his eyebrows and had a western hair cut... /s/
Where in scripture is there ANYTHING about Veronica, specifically or otherwise? Just asking because this sounds like a myth.
And perhaps you didn't read this post, this post, or this post on that thread. But thanks for playing.
