Over 2,000 Evangelical, Orthodox Chaplains Join Catholics in Opposing Pentagon on Same-Sex Marriage

(CNSNews.com) – A national group representing more than 2,000 military chaplains from evangelical Christian and Orthodox backgrounds said on Wednesday that the Pentagon has launched a “direct assault” on marriage, and the chaplains they endorse will not be allowed to perform same-sex wedding ceremonies under any circumstances.

Dr. Ron Crews, executive director of the newly formed Chaplain Alliance for Religious Liberty, said his 2,000-plus membership is concerned about a Sept. 30 Pentagon memorandum that authorizes chaplains and military chapel facilities to be used for “any private ceremony,” a move that contradicts current federal law, the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).

“By dishonestly sanctioning the use of federal facilities for ‘marriage counterfeits’ that federal law and the vast majority of Americans have rejected, the Pentagon has launched a direct assault on the fundamental unit of society – husband and wife,” Crews said.

Crews further said his Evangelical membership is in accord with the Catholic Archdiocese for Military Service, headed by Archbishop Timothy Broglio, which said on Tuesday that no Catholic chaplain in the military will be allowed to perform same-sex “marriages” and that same-sex weddings would not be allowed in the Catholic chapel on the grounds of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

Does DOMA apply to purely religious ceremonies? Like if a chaplain just held a “gay marriage” ceremony with no state mandate involved? Or does this already happen?

DADT allowed homosexuals to serve in the military if they kept it to themselves. Prior to this, homosexuals were not allowed to serve in the military at all. So...if DADT was repealed, why are we not back to how it was prior to DADT?

Perhaps the attack of the Obama administration will bring Catholics and Orthodox closer together just as the attack of the various know-nothings on the FR religion_forum drew Catholics and Orthodox closer together

I hope every Christian of goodwill toward his/her fellow Christians will come together to fight.

This is bigger than just us Catholics. We know what to expect and we know where this is going to lead. We are sure in prophecy from our visionaries.

Those who want to fight against evil will put aside petty squabbles to join hands and those who can’t forgo pettiness, well, we will fight for them also.

That’s what Christ would have us do.

Have military regulations banning homosexual activity been voided or are they still in effect?

I don’t know, but if the regulation that allowed homosexuals to serve in the military, (don’t ask, don’t tell), is repealed, logic would dictate that the original rules would be in place. Maybe a current JAG officer might be able to enlighten us.
