Actually, John Carroll was the one who stayed a priest, founding Georgetown University, and becoming the first bishop and archbishop of the United States, in Baltimore. (That’s how highly Rome thought of the revolutionary priest.)

TO CORRECT A PREVIOUS STATEMENT:

Interesting point, although my emphasis is more along the lines of the establishment of the first colonies in America which became the United States. Puritanism and Congregationalism had far more influence than the RCC.
