All you got to hang your hat on is a completely fallacious interpretation of I Cor 15:29 that does violence to the Greek.

 1 And it came to pass after I, Nephi, had made an end of speaking to my brethren, behold they said unto me: Thou hast declared unto us hard things, more than we are able to bear.

  2 And it came to pass that I said unto them that I knew that I had spoken ^ahard things against the wicked, according to the truth; and the righteous have I justified, and testified that they should be lifted up at the last day; wherefore, the ^bguilty taketh the ^ctruth to be hard, for it ^dcutteth them to the very center.

  3 And now my brethren, if ye were righteous and were willing to hearken to the truth, and give heed unto it, that ye might ^awalk uprightly before God, then ye would not murmur because of the truth, and say: Thou speakest hard things against us.

  4 And it came to pass I, Nephi, did exhort my brethren, with all diligence, to keep the commandments of the Lord.

  5 And it came to pass that they did ^ahumble themselves before the Lord; insomuch that I had joy and great hopes of them, that they would walk in the paths of righteousness.

  10 And it came to pass that as my father arose in the morning, and went forth to the tent door, to his great astonishment he beheld upon the ground a round ^aball of curious workmanship; and it was of fine brass. And within the ball were two spindles; and the one ^bpointed the way whither we should go into the wilderness.

  11 And it came to pass that we did gather together whatsoever things we should carry into the wilderness, and all the remainder of our provisions which the Lord had given unto us; and we did take ^aseed of every kind that we might carry into the wilderness.

  12 And it came to pass that we did take our tents and depart into the wilderness, across the river Laman.

  13 And it came to pass that we traveled for the space of four days, nearly a south-southeast direction, and we did pitch our tents again; and we did call the name of the place ^aShazer.

  14 And it came to pass that we did take our bows and our arrows, and go forth into the wilderness to slay food for our families; and after we had slain food for our families we did return again to our families in the wilderness, to the place of Shazer. And we did go forth again in the wilderness, following the same direction, keeping in the most fertile parts of the wilderness, which were in the borders near the ^aRed Sea.

  15 And it came to pass that we did travel for the space of many days, ^aslaying food by the way, with our bows and our arrows and our stones and our slings.

  16 And we did follow the ^adirections of the ball, which led us in the more fertile parts of the wilderness.

  17 And after we had traveled for the space of many days, we did pitch our tents for the space of a time, that we might again rest ourselves and obtain food for our families.

  18 And it came to pass that as I, Nephi, went forth to slay food, behold, I did break my bow, which was made of fine ^asteel; and after I did break my bow, behold, my brethren were angry with me because of the loss of my bow, for we did obtain no food.

  21 Now  it came to pass that I, Nephi, having been afflicted with my brethren because of the loss of my bow, and their bows having lost their ^asprings, it began to be exceedingly difficult, yea, insomuch that we could obtain no food.

  22 And it came to pass that I, Nephi, did speak much unto my brethren, because they had hardened their hearts again, even unto ^acomplaining against the Lord their God.

  23 And it came to pass that I, Nephi, did ^amake out of wood a bow, and out of a straight stick, an arrow; wherefore, I did arm myself with a bow and an arrow, with a sling and with stones. And I said unto my ^bfather: Whither shall I go to obtain food?

  24 And it came to pass that he did ^ainquire of the Lord, for they had ^bhumbled themselves because of my words; for I did say many things unto them in the energy of my soul.

  25 And it came to pass that the voice of the Lord came unto my father; and he was truly ^achastened because of his murmuring against the Lord, insomuch that he was brought down into the depths of sorrow.

  26 And it came to pass  that the voice of the Lord said unto him: Look upon the ball, and behold the things which are written.

  27 And it came to pass that when my father beheld the things which were ^awritten upon the ball, he did fear and tremble exceedingly, and also my brethren and the sons of Ishmael and our wives.

  28 And it came to pass that I, Nephi, beheld the pointers which were in the ball, that they did work according to the ^afaith and diligence and heed which we did give unto them.

  29 And there was also written upon them a new writing, which was plain to be read, which did give us ^aunderstanding concerning the ways of the Lord; and it was written and changed from time to time, according to the faith and diligence which we gave unto it. And thus we see that by ^bsmall means the Lord can bring about great things.

  30 And it came to pass that I, Nephi, did go forth up into the top of the mountain, according to the ^adirections which were given upon the ball.

  31 And it came to pass that I did slay wild ^abeasts, insomuch that I did obtain food for our families.

  32 And it came to pass that I did return to our tents, bearing the beasts which I had slain; and now when they beheld that I had obtained ^afood, how great was their joy! And it came to pass that they did humble themselves before the Lord, and did give thanks unto him.

  33 And it came to pass that we did again take our journey, traveling nearly the same course as in the beginning; and after we had traveled for the space of many days we did pitch our tents again, that we might tarry for the space of a time.

  34 And it came to pass that ^aIshmael died, and was buried in the place which was called ^bNahom.

  35 And it came to pass that the daughters of Ishmael did ^amourn exceedingly, because of the loss of their father, and because of their ^bafflictions in the wilderness; and they did ^cmurmur against my father, because he had brought them out of the land of Jerusalem, saying: Our father is dead; yea, and we have wandered much in the wilderness, and we have suffered much affliction, hunger, thirst, and fatigue; and after all these sufferings we must perish in the wilderness with hunger.

  36 And thus they did murmur against my father, and also against me; and they were desirous to ^areturn again to Jerusalem.

  37 And Laman said unto Lemuel and also unto the sons of Ishmael: Behold, let us ^aslay our father, and also our brother Nephi, who has taken it upon him to be our ^bruler and our teacher, who are his elder brethren.

  38 Now, he says that the Lord has talked with him, and also that ^aangels have ministered unto him. But behold, we know that he lies unto us; and he tells us these things, and he worketh many things by his cunning arts, that he may deceive our eyes, thinking, perhaps, that he may lead us away into some strange wilderness; and after he has led us away, he has thought to make himself a king and a ruler over us, that he may do with us according to his will and pleasure. And after this manner did my brother Laman ^bstir up their hearts to ^canger.

  39 And it came to pass that the Lord was with us, yea, even the voice of the Lord came and did speak many words unto them, and did ^achasten them exceedingly; and after they were chastened by the voice of the Lord they did turn away their anger, and did repent of their sins, insomuch that the Lord did bless us again with food, that we did not perish.

Oh, sure Monkey Face Mormon one...let's compare the Old Testament and your "Another Testament" (the Book of Mormon) for a moment:

Let’s look first at the supposed story of the Book of Mormon formation, shall we? and see how “similar” it is to the Bible.

Let’s assume, just for the moment, that Smith’s Book of Mormon account was “true”; let me get this straight: We get BoM records, supposedly, from generations beginning with

…to Jarom…

…to Amaron and Chemish…
…to Abinadom…
…to Ameleki…
…to Benjamin, who also gets it from the first Mosiah…
…to the second Mosiah…
…to the second Alma, who also gets it from the first Alma,
…to the first Helaman…
…to Shiblon, who gives it to the second Helaman…
…to the second Nephi…
…to the third Nephi…
…to the 4th guy named Nephi…(three generations of Jewish leaders naming their son the same name?)…
…to the 1st Amos…
…to the 2nd Amos – before 200 A.D. , who gives it to Ammaron and the 2nd Mormon, whose dad was also named Mormon…
…to Moroni…
…and Moroni, about 400 years after Christ, finishes up the gold plate record and buries it in the ground. But before he finishes the book by the name of his dad, Mormon, he writes:

And now, behold, we have written this record according to our knowledge, in the characters which are called among us the reformed Egyptian, being handed down and altered by us, according to our manner of speech. And if our plates had been sufficiently large we should have written in Hebrew; but the Hebrew hath been altered by us also; and if we could have written in Hebrew, behold, ye would have had no imperfections in our record. (Mormon 9:32-33)

Moroni and his “dad” Mormon were the main Book of Mormon books’ compilers. Then, supposedly 4th-century A.D. (Bible-wise), Nehemiah’s been most identified in this way – Nehemiah being 4th-century B.C.:

13 5 Besides these things, it is also told in the records and in Nehemiah's Memoirs how he collected the books about the kings, the writings of the prophets and of David, and the royal letters about sacred offerings. 14 In like manner Judas also collected for us the books that had been scattered because of the war, and we now have them in our possession. At around the same time, Ezra apparently brought into Nehemiah's possession the Law/Pentateuch: 1 all the people assembled as one man in the square before the Water Gate. They told Ezra the scribe to bring out the Book of the Law of Moses, which the LORD had commanded for Israel. 2 So on the first day of the seventh month Ezra the priest brought the Law before the assembly, which was made up of men and women and all who were able to understand. (Nehemiah 8:1-2)

Comparison #1: Would the Old Testament writers have used ‘Reformed Egyptian’ and concluded their writings were ‘imperfect’ like Moroni did?

Now tell us, “Bible scholar” Monkey Face…how “true” were it to strike you if the one most identified as the later compiler of the Old Testament, Nehemiah, wrote the following as he was finishing the book of Nehemiah:

Comparison #2: Comparing ‘Ghosts’:

So, rather than just stop @ the 4th centuries (B.C. or A.D.) -- like I did in my previous post -- let's review what supposedly happened after the supposed "gold plates" recording the supposed "another testament" were supposedly buried in the ground…

…First...Moroni resurrects himself as a ghost-turned-angel…
…tells Joseph Smith where they are…
…but Smith can’t retrieve them for a while…
…then...Smith carts around gold plates that’s “worthy” of producing 522 English pages of writing…
…and a couple of people say they saw it with “spiritual eyes”…
…and yet Smith doesn’t even use these “gold plates” to translate anything…
…imagine that!
...instead, he has a pet rock, a supposed urim & thummim device…
…which he uses to somehow “translate” the text -- all as he places his face into a hat and dictates it…

Hmmmm....

Now who was this Moroni character again, alive and dead?

Alive: “Behold, I have but few things to write, which things I have been commanded by my father.” (Moroni character, Mormon 8:1)

Wow! That’s really “Holy Ghost” “inspirational” material…a guy who writes down Biblical stuff just ‘cause his dad ordered him to!!!

Dead: Moroni was a ghost.

"Moroni, who deposited the plates in a hill in Manchester, Ontario County, New York, being dead and raised again therefrom, appeared unto me, and told me where they were, and gave me directions how to obtain them." (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 119)

Now did Nehemiah or any other Biblical compilers identify ghosts as “key agents” in the canonization of the Old Testament? (No?) Yet Mormons hint that their "another testament" was somehow formulated in a manner to the Bible?

Now, if God needed dead ghosts to show where hidden records were from 14 centuries ago, why didn’t the ghost of the prophet Samuel point out where the previous OT records were kept when the witch of Endor rose him from the dead?

Instead, the spirit of Samuel said: "Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?" … "Why do you consult me, now that the LORD has turned away from you and become your enemy? 17 The LORD has done what he predicted through me. The LORD has torn the kingdom out of your hands and given it to one of your neighbors—to David. 18 Because you did not obey the LORD or carry out his fierce wrath against the Amalekites, the LORD has done this to you today. 19 The LORD will hand over both Israel and you to the Philistines, and tomorrow you and your sons will be with me. The LORD will also hand over the army of Israel to the Philistines." (1 Samuel 28:15-19)

Comparison #3: Sources used by Mormon vs. Nehemiah

As I cited 2 Maccabees 2:13 in my previous post, we know ”Nehemiah's Memoirs how he collected the books about the kings, the writings of the prophets and of David, and the royal letters about sacred offerings”
...and we know from Neh. 8 how Ezra returned the Pentateuch from exile in Nehemiah’s presence.

So Nehemiah merged the Pentateuch, the kings’ writings, the prophets, David, etc. Now, I started off my previous post with a supposed generational Book of Mormon records “storied account”…and I didn’t even mention all the characters quoted in the Book of Mormon…like Zenos, Isaiah, Amulek, Zeniff, Abinadi, the first Moroni, Pahoran, etc.

But allow me to point out one more source for the supposed 4th century compiler character by the name of Mormon. Here, allow me to first quote Mormon…and then I’ll quote his source!

And now I, Mormon, make a record of all things which I have both seen and heard, and call it the Book of Mormon…And now behold, I, Mormon, do not desire to harrow up the souls of men…(Mormon 1:1; 5:8)

”I could a tale unfold, whose lightest word Would harrow up thy soul. (Shakespeare, 17th century) and cited in 1913 Webster dictionary, showing that this phrase of Shakespeare had been well known since Webster first came out with his 1828 version.

I can tell you this, Monkey Face…the Biblical ancient writers weren’t quoting Shakespeare like Smith had the Mormon character do in Mormon 5:8. Smith was giving an obvious clue for those to find after his death that the Book of Mormon WAS the “tale unfold” – Smith’s lightest word which would harrow up thy soul…And just to double emphasize this, lines 79 and 80 of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Act 3, Scene 1 read: The undiscovered country from whose bourn No traveller returns. somehow gets paraphrased in the 6th century B.C. in 2 Nephi 1:14:

…hear the words of a trembling parent, whose limbs ye must soon lay down in the cold and silent grave, from whence no traveler can return

If false, it is one of the most cunning, wicked, bold, deep laid, impositions ever palmed upon the world... (Introduction to Divine Authenticity of the Book of Mormon, pp. 124-125).

I mean, that answer alone should suffice for Millet as to why its drawn such a provocative reaction!

But I'll list a few other reasons as well:

* ...heavily plagiarize Biblical phrases from the Bible without credit -- even copying 11 word-for-word chapters from the Bible -- all so that when somebody read my stories I added to my "own version" of "scriptures" it'd give it a sense of "credibility," do you think such plagiarism of the most popular book in the history of the world would gain a standing ovation?
* ...heavily borrow from the Bible even narratives -- and just "change out" the character involved -- do you think that would cause on "encore" call from the audience?

What do I mean re the first asterisk above? An estimated 17,000+ words (26+ pages) of [KJV] ...material...either verbatim quotations of the Bible, or advance revelations of what would be written later, all in 1611 King James wording found its way into the Book of Mormon. Source: Facts & Feelings: Evaluating the Book of Mormon [Added note: Well, I guess that shows Joseph Smith knew how to "cut & paste" back in his day, too...When I open up my Book of Mormon to 2 Nephi 24, yes, it says, for example "Compare Isaiah 14" -- but it doesn't say, "lifted word for word" from Isaiah 14!

As for the second asterisk above, what character of the Bible did Joseph Smith "rip off" to pull into his Book of Mormon?

Well, read the New Testament account of Paul (like the book of Acts) and then compare it to the character of "Alma" in the book of Mosiah -- Mosiah chapter 27 -- which was supposedly ... per Smith, written between B.C. 100 and 92!

Bill Hearn covered the overlaps in his online pamphlet, A Reply to a Mormon. Go to A Reply to a Mormon and scroll down to pp. 33-34:

"Old Testament Book of Mormon characters were modeled after New Testament persons. Note comparison between Alma and Paul (Mosiah 27):
a.Both tried to "destroy the church" before their conversion.
b. Both were on a "mission of persecution" the day they were converted.
c. In both cases, those "present fell to earth."
d. In both cases, a voice spoke which others could not understand.
e. Both were asked by the voice why they were fighting against the work of God.
f. Both were helpless and "had to be helped by their friends."
g. Both fasted and prayed as a result.
h. Both preached after being converted.
i. Both worked with their hands to support their ministeries.
j. Both healed a crippled man.
k. Both "were put into prison."
l. Both prayed in prison.
m.Both experienced an earthquake while in prison.
n. In both cases, "the prisoner's bonds were loosed."

(*) Faith, hope and charity (Alma 7:24; I Corinthians 13:13).
(*) The power of God unto salvation (Alma 15:6; Romans 1:16).
(*) Without God in the world (Alma 41:11; Ephesians 2:12).

(3) While Joseph Smith copied the apostle Paul to create the Alma character -- even copying from Eph. 2:12 -- he directly militated vs. what Paul said was crucial to our salvation per Eph. 2:8-10:

8For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the GIFT of God: 9Not of works, lest any man should boast. 10For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

Simply stated...
* Mormonism has turned a "GIFT" into that which you have to earn!
* Secondly, it has bastardized the word "grace" -- since the very word means "gift!"
* Thirdly, note the order carefully here: God's gift of grace is the mechanism of salvation -- ["saved" is a past tense or present tense word...which Mormons are extremely uncomfortable with since they push "salvation" into the future!] This grace is accessed through faith in the dying & resurrected Christ. Paul says if "works" were the way, WE could boast about it -- 'cause these works are what we do. Yes, we do good works -- but we ourselves are God's worksmanship who created us (& then re-created us via being born from above) "unto good works." When Jesus was asked point blank: 28Then said they unto him, What shall WE do, that WE might work the works of God? (John 6:28) -- Jesus set the person straight: 29Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work OF GOD, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent. (John 6:29)

Why do Mormons have such a problem comprehending simple English -- that the works we do is credited and attributed to "the work of God" beyond us?

In a word, pride. The Mormon "gospel" appeals to man's pride...the "do it yourself" "pull yourself up by the bootstraps" approach.

But, really, the blame lies first with Joseph Smith, whom Mormons have believed.

Smith altered the Biblical gospel by claiming in the Book of Mormon that the mainstream teaching for almost 1,000 years in the Americas was a doctrine of the gift of grace only coming AFTER we fulfilled God's legalistic checklist. He said before grace kicked in, we needed to:
* Do "all you can do" (2 Nephi 25:23, supposedly almost 600 years before Christ)
* Do "works" (Helaman 12:24, supposedly 6 B.C.)
* "Deny yourselves of all ungodliness, and love God with all your might, mind, and strength," (Moroni 10:32, supposedly written 421 A.D.)

If you did all this, Smith said, you thereby would "earn" grace -- thereby turning the meaning of both "grace" and "gift" on its head!

Anybody failing of doing "all they can do" (emotionally, physically, spiritually, relationally)...or not doing whatever "works" are required...or failing to love God "with all your might, mind, and strength"...or not denying yourselves of "ALL ungodliness"... sorry...Mormon grace doesn't kick in for you!
...You simply, per Smith's Book of Mormon, are not eligible for God's grace! [I've quoted those BoM verses @ the end of this post so people can read them themselves!]

Since rarely do people heal themselves to go to see the physician to get well, Mormons have it all turned around!!!

Clearly, Joseph Smith did not read or agree with Jesus' words in Matthew 5:31-32:

31And Jesus answering said unto them, They that are whole need not a physician; but they that are sick. 32I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

Jesus came for us sinners. For those who need healing from the GREAT PHYSICIAN. He didn't come for the self-righteous -- those who were so perfected that they already were doing "all they" could do...and were already loving God with ALL their might, mind, and strength...and were already denying ALL aspects of ungodliness!

BoM anti-grace passages:

* 2 Nephi 25:23: ...ye are saved by grace, AFTER ALL YOU CAN DO." (2 Nephi 25:23)

* Helaman 12:24: "...may God grant, in his great fulness, that men might be brought unto repentance and good works, that they might be restored unto grace for grace, according to their WORKS." (Helaman 12:24)

* MORONI 10:32: “Yea, come unto Christ, and be perfected in him, and deny yourselves of all ungodliness; and if ye shall deny yourselves of ALL ungodliness, and love God with all your might, mind and strength, THEN is his grace sufficient for you, that by his grace ye may be perfect in Christ; and if by the grace of God ye are perfect in Christ, ye can in nowise deny the power of God.”

The following is paraphrased from Colleen Ralson, Color Me Confused, Watchman Fellowship, 1988.
* Smith uses Greek words like "Bible" in a B.C. era before the word "Bible" was used (2 Nephi 29:3)...
* ...Uses "Church" in a B.C. era before Christ was born (1 Nephi 4:26; 13:26)...and "church" was a Greek word supposedly being used in a "Reformed Egyptian" (whatever that is) text??? cf. Mosiah 26 -- 7 references in its verses along with Alma 4 -- numerous references!...
*...Calls Christians "Christians" in supposed 73 B.C. (Alma 46:16) -- yet the Book of Acts tells us (11:26) that "They were FIRST called Christians in Antioch" well over 100 years LATER than that! Why would there been "Christians" when Christ wasn't even the obvious Messiah yet???
* ...Uses New Testament prophesy language (like from Luke 22:30) in supposedly B.C. OT times (1 Nephi 12:9)...
* ...It conveniently talks about Christ having already been baptized in 2 Nephi 31:6 -- yet the time given for that "revelation" was 6 centuries pre-Christ!...
* ...Verses later (2 Nephi 33:6) Jesus has redeemed (past tense) Nephi from hell...date at the bottom? Between 559 and 545 B.C.!
* ...The Old Testament indeed prophesies a "virgin" to conceive the Christ child -- but never gives her name...yet guess what? The Book of Mormon does! It says "Mary's" name -- in supposed 124 B.C. times!
* ...Also look @ Alma 19:10 -- which quotes Jesus from Luke 7:9 (see also John 7:46). What's wrong with that? Well Alma 19 was supposedly 90 B.C.

...And it goes on & on & on like that.

2 Nephi 8 (supposedly from 559-545 B.C.) is a word-for-word copy of Isaiah 51. What's wrong with that? Well Smith included even italic comments added to the KJV for clarification purposes -- the italic words were NOT in the original text!!!

What's Smith doing "translating" Reformed Egyptian from supposed 5 1/2 centuries before Christ -- words that including English italic words from 1600s -- that Isaiah didn't use when recording Isaiah 51???

1. Church organizational structure and titles of leaders [Hey, we don't need to provoke pagans into laughter by coming up with religious titles like the bishopric, do we?]
2. gods...plural [due to insistence by some FReeper Mormons that they only worship one godhead, a few Flying Inmans have begun referencing that belief as polymonotheism]
3. Plurality of wives doctrine [Ah. Polymonogamy]
4. Word of Wisdom [I guess the people of South America weren't very wise about Brazilian coffee]
5. God is an exalted man [Who knew this facebook boy would make it big? Hmm...a god who worshiped his own god/gods once upon a time, eh?]
6. Celestial marriage [If you want to become an eternal polygamist, current Lds church policy says you can...just make sure you secure permission of anybody you've divorced & get "married" to your multiple SERIAL spouses one at a time in the temple for eternity]
