Two Things Conservative Catholics Should Stop Doing
The American Catholic ^ | 4/19/12 | Bonchamps

Has the title of this blog post got your attention? Good. Many of this blog’s regular readers and com-boxers could be classified as conservative Catholic, myself included (though I do my best to elude fixed categories). So I hope you will take this to heart, and maybe even take the debate outside the confines of this blog if you feel so moved.

I like Bill Donohue. I sympathize with him and his organization, The Catholic League. I share many of their sentiments, including outrage and disgust, whenever the media decides to take another whack at Christianity. So I certainly don’t critique Donohue or the CL from the left. Nor is my critique limited to Donohue and CL, but could extend to any number of Catholic and Protestant organizations as well.

With that said, here are two things that I wish they would all stop doing, and they are closely related.

1. Stop demanding that people “apologize” for their anti-Christian remarks.

As a young man trying to be a faithful Catholic, I am simply not the least bit interested in apologies from Bill Maher or Jon Stewart, the current target of Donohue’s organization. There are several reasons for this.

First, forced public apologies are the modus operandi of the hysterical and politically-correct left. The left demands forced apologies for every off-color comment made about race, gender, or sexual preference because its views on these topics, rooted as they are in egalitarianism and other constructed ideologies, can never triumph in a free and fair marketplace of ideas. People have to be forced to accept the leftist narrative about these topics as legitimate because most of that narrative is contrary not only to science and sound scholarship, but to everyday wisdom and common sense as experienced by the vast majority of people.

Catholicism............

Generally in agreement with the post. Although I’m no fan of the Catholic League in general as I find Donohue pretty obnoxious and think he puts Catholics in a bad light as well.

(though I do my best to elude fixed categories)

probably the two "categories" most robust, least-likely to become inaccurate by redefinition or co-opting; the two categories most rooted in unchanging truth and therefore themselves unchangeable are "Catholic" and "conservative".

I'm quite at home there.

#3 Stop using the excuse, “Don’t blame us, everyone molests children.”

Everyone isn’t proclaiming to be the “Universal Church” either...

This guy sounds like an apologist. The point about asking for an apology is to make the aggressor think twice about continuing to do the same thing. As far as mocking Islam, it is fair to ask why not? Of course we all know that Muslims tend to respond to criticism in ways that are not necessarily healthy to the aggressor or his family. So, in effect, they are letting the Muslims set the debate terms, which should not be permitted.

It’s when people DON’T stand up for themselves is when they get rolled, and its been proven over and over again.

#4. Stop "turning the other cheek." That is not what Catholics did at the Battle of Lepanto, or at the Gates Of Vienna, at Mohacs, or at The Battle of Tours. In dealing with Islam, turn the other cheek when you are out of ammo, your sword is broken, and you are bleeding to death anyway.

As far as Bill Maher goes, he is the product of a Jesuit High School, and his mental development ceased as a sophomore there. He is an Irish Street kid making it as a Jewish Show-biz kid, and it has paid well.

#5. Stop voting for Democrats just because Honey Fitz gave your olde Granma a bag of coal or a turkey. They support abortion, and many of the leadership are communists.

No, he’s right. Who wants a fake apology? Sarah did not ask for one for herself, but for others. Personally, we turn the other cheek. We do stand up for others. But, the writer is correct, as history shows. When the church is under persecution, it grows and gets stronger. For many, it makes you look at the accusations and see if there is truth, then take action to correct what needs to be. The church has drawn ridicule for a lot of reasons and some introspection is needed. We will all come out of it stronger. We need only remember that Christ said that gates of Hell will not prevail against the church to totally destroy it.

Ain't that the truth. So many Boomer Catholics I know that aren't Catholic because their family is, are democrats because their family is.

-—Everyone isn’t proclaiming to be the “Universal Church” either...-—

Universal, not impeccable. And Jesus foretold the coming of wolves in sheep’s clothing.

Priests abuse children at a lower rate than ministers, and at a much lower rate than teachers.

Got to remember that one CANNOT become a doormat and just simply take abuse.

As democrat as Catholics are, they never voted republican at all before the boomers. (although 1956 is in dispute).

Stop the hypocrisy of joking about female teachers molesting teenage boys and adding your idiotic “not guilty” comments, MikeWUSAF.

It wasn’t to the Protestants, who have only voted democrat 3 times, 1932, 1936, and 1964.

The Catholic vote is democrat, but not because of boomers.
