Here's a logical reason: sticking it to the traditionalists, who happen to make up a large part of the resistance to the socialist overhaul. Staging a fake struggle for "equal rights" (keep repeating that phrase until nobody questions it) to demonize and discredit your opponents in the gullible eyes of the public; casting them as "enemies of progress," the likes of which opposed equality for blacks and women, and who, if not forcefully suppressed, will endanger YOUR rights. Otherwise, as I see it, the only logical stances to take on the legal definition of marriage are to leave it be, preserving its original intent--to define and reinforce family structure as prescribed by nature and ancient tradition--or stop trying to legally define marriage altogether and let individuals, churches and other private entities decide what a legitimate family looks like. I tend to favor the latter. If one man, one woman is the natural and/or divine order of things, it will prevail without artificial measures like legal marriage licenses. But the left isn't interested in the logical means to a free society. They're interested in the logical means to their own dominance.
