Actually it's worse than that. One of the Afghan tribes was concerned that their numbers were declining because the wives weren't bearing enough children. They asked the American medical officers if this might have been the result of chemical weapons used against them during the Russo-Afghan War in the 1980s. The American doctors tested the young Afghan men and found no genetic damage that would have prevented the fathering of children. The problem lay elsewhere.

American female medical personnel interviewed Afghan wives about their sex lives and relations with their husbands. They discovered the majority of Afghan husbands were using adolescent boys and young men as sex partners (with some bestiality along the way thrown in).
