Anti-Mormon bias facing Mitt Romney is as strong as what his father faced in 1967, poll shows
Boston Globe ^ | June 21, 2012 | Callum Borchers

Mitt Romney faces an anti-Mormon bias just as strong as the one his father confronted during his own presidential run more than four decades ago, according to a Gallup poll.

Eighteen percent of Americans say that if their political party nominated “a generally well qualified person for president who happened to be Mormon,” they would not vote for that candidate. Romney, the presumptive Republican nominee, is a devout Mormon who once presided over the church’s Boston stake.

When Gallup asked the same question in 1967, during George Romney’s bid for the White House, 17 percent of Americans said they would refuse to vote for a Mormon.

“The stability of resistance to a Mormon presidential candidate over the past 45 years is an anomaly, given that resistance to a candidate who is black, a woman or Jewish has declined substantially over the same period of time,” Gallup Poll Editor-in-Chief Frank Newport wrote in a press release announcing the survey results.

The electoral significance of a lingering anti-Mormon bias is unclear because only 57 percent of Americans even know that Romney is a Mormon, according to the poll.

“This suggests the possibility that as Romney’s faith becomes better known this summer and fall, it could become more of a negative factor -- given that those who resist the idea of a Mormon president will in theory become more likely to realize that Romney is a Mormon as the campaign unfolds,” Newport said. “That things will actually work out this way, however, is far from clear.”

Democrats, who are unlikely to vote for Romney anyway, oppose a Mormon president at a much higher rate than Republicans, 24 percent to 10 percent. Opposition among independents stands at 18 percent.

Trying to use that truth to play political slap down is, well, obscene. This incessant assertion that voting for a non-perfect man (a man caught up in a cult)

WTF?

So, we are not to use the truth? And just ignore the fact he's in a cult??

I guess we are to act like what the rest of America did in 2008 and ignore Rev. Wright and Obama's muslim/communist ties, and look how well that turned out...... I guess we'll have to ignore Romney's kooky religion and hope for the best.

dragon I am pretty sure grey was quoting someone else.
Romney is a liberal.
Romney is a mormon.
Romney may be the candidate.
None of these can be separated from the other, they are intertwined.

However, Martin Luther once said that he’d rather be ruled by a competent Turk than an incompetent Christian.

I haven't read through the entire thread, so forgive me if someone else has already raised this point.

Most historians do not believe that Martin Luther ever said that. The best work on this is by Dr. Gene Edward Veith. You can hear an interview with him on this topic at theamericanview.com.

Sorry Grey, I did not mean that towards you but what you had pointed out on someone’s comment. It’s hard to believe people want to suspend the truth in order to elect someone.

Whether Martin Luther said it or not, it’s still a good rule to follow. Whatever we think of Romney’s politics (to the left of what I’d like), he’s still a good, decent human being who loves America and wants what’s best for this country.

I'm not sure that the wisdom is so obvious. If the logic in the statement was self-evident, people wouldn't need to attribute Martin Luther to add credibility.

If Mitt Romney were just a pew sitter, most wouldn't be alarmed by his religion but Romney is a true-blue believer. Because most people and all Christians hold that Mormonism is a false religion with a false gospel, there is a problem voting for Mitt Romney. Either Mitt Romney is totally deceived by Mormonism or he knows that it is false religion and is actively trying to deceive people into joining. Neither is a good characteristic in a President.

'Someone' doesn't want to suspend the truth. That is a mischaracterization. This is the religion forum.

'Someone' is objecting to this forum being flipped into a pure political exploitation. Milt Rominy (rhymes with hominy, the tasteless corn product) is not just a memeber of a non-Christian cult, he counts himself a melchizedek high priest in that religion, a priesthood to which there is ONLY ONE high Priest, as Paul showed in Hebrews, because the High Priest arose fromt he grave and is Alive forever more functioning as the ONLY Priest int he order of Melchizedek. Apparently Joey Smith was unfamiliar with the Bible Letter to the Hebrews when he fabricated the hgigh priesthood in LDS inc..

Mormonism, if Rominy becomes president, will be plowed/forrowed/and winnowed hither and yon for four years like it has never been exposed before. 'Someone' counts that a good thing and hopefully it would lead to perhaps millions of duped fellow human beings leaving that cult for Christian sects.

It’s hard to believe people want to suspend the truth in order to elect someone.

It's especially hard to see "someones" slander others in an attempt to paint themselves as superior in their judgment of Romney and refuse to just shut up and vote their own choice AND allow others to do the same.

I can't discern why anyone would convince himself that after six years of the Flying Inmans' combatting mormonism on FR we would turncoat and give up the battle now.

Exposing the falseness and lies of mormonism is MORE important now than ever in order to help prevent innocents from falling into the heresy.

Thank you. However, Elsie was the first one that I recall raising the “deceived or deceiving” argument. I just borrowed it.

All of the evidence says otherwise, Romney is not a good and decent man, he has lived the life of a self serving pathological liar and cult leader who has none of the normal love of America or of his fellow Americans.

When you look at the Romney outside of his Mormon tribe, it gets pretty nasty.

Romney has always been against conservatism and the agenda of the Christian and conservative Reagan wing of the GOP, Romney even supported, donated to, fundraised for, and voted for democrats before making the decision to register republican in October of 1993 to run for office.

Romney was repulsed by Reagan and the "good, decent" pro-life, anti gay-agenda conservatives, and changed his party registration accordingly.

How does a decent person advance the destruction (by lies and distortions) of conservatives?

Mormonism, if Rominy becomes president, will be plowed/forrowed/and winnowed hither and yon for four years like it has never been exposed before.

When it comes to evil, I try never to judge its future.( at least before Jesus returns.) I think some won't give a damn, others will circle the wagons. Mormonism will endure until Christ returns and sadly might even take more people down with it.

What do we already know about Mitt? We know he will throw people under the bus to advance his own career. He will advance liberal agendas. To pretend he will some how rescue us from Obama and the mess he created or accelerated, is a pipe dream.

At best, what we can hope for in Romney, is a a more slow paced Obama. My husband who is voting for Romney knows this. He will pull the lever for him but he's under no delusion of what Romney will be. I won't vote for Romney come hell or high water.

Here's my problem with the "If you don't vote Romney, you're voting for Obama". These people are looking for saviors. They are also ignoring voting for the right people to get into congress. This country is a mess because the people on the right fell asleep and now that the house is on fire, they're in a panic.

If people want to take back this country from the left, they need to wake up and stay awake, get active and vote for the right people into congress that will actually do as they campaigned for. The right also needs to take back the schools, the media and the churches. Waiting for one person to rescue them ever four years is insane. The right must also have some damn standards and stick to them. Don't compromise with evil. Don't keep stepping down when confronted. Stand for the truth even if it means you stand alone.

Your reasoning has a ring of self-contradiction to it. You understand why your husband is voting for removal of little barry bastard commie, and you endorse getting involved to exercise our sovereingty responsibilities, yet you will be voting for someone who cannot cause the removal of barry soetoro because you demand that we all get involved and stand up for what is right as we allow what is openly wrong to continue in power. So it has come to this ...

Indeed. How appalling it is that people stand on their principles rather than rationalizing how to support a totally-unacceptable candidate because he isn't Obama. (/sarcasm)
