Jesus Christ as Elder Brother [Mitt's ancestor originated Lds idea treating Jesus as mere brother]
BYU Studies ^ | 2006 | Corbin Volluz

Posted on 07/18/2012 5:07:41 AM PDT by Colofornian

Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints often refer to Jesus Christ as their elder brother. This expression of endearment appears in sermons, lessons, and publications...The title is used enough that some might think that elder brother is one of the many titles attributed to Christ in the scriptures, but nowhere do the scriptures use this expression in reference to Jesus. Nor can the idea that Jesus is our elder brother be ascribed with certitude to the teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith...

Beginning in 1844 we find the first instances in which the Church leaders use the phrase elder brother...to refer to Christ. These six recordings were all recorded contemporaneously. June 22, 1844, Orson Pratt...

The concept that Christ is the elder brother...does not appear to have been actually articulated and recorded until 1871 by Orson Pratt:

Now, who is Jesus? He is only our brother, but happens to be the firstborn...how is he the firstborn? Because he is the eldest--the first one born of the whole family of spirits and therefore is our elder brother.

...It is apparently Orson Pratt, then, who should be credited with the first attempt to...use the title elder brother as applied to Jesus. It was Orson Pratt who first recorded the concept that Jesus is "our Brother" shortly before the death of Joseph Smith, and Orson Pratt who first articulated that Jesus is all humankind's elder brother in the spirit...

Section 93, an 1833 revelation to Joseph Smith, allows implicitly the idea of brotherhood with Jesus: since human spirits are eternal, these spirits were with God in the beginning just as Jesus was.

SNIP

To those not familiar with the plan of salvation, hearing Jesus Christ called an elder brother might be misunderstood as a diminution of Christ's high status...

Well, I guess since Jesus is the Son of God per the scriptures, and we become children of God when we are saved, it isn’t out of line to refer to Jesus as our brother. Just as it is not out of line to say Mary is the mother of Jesus. But we all know He is much, MUCH more than our brother or son of Mary.

Thank you T. P. I was about to quote the first verse of The Friendly Beasts.

In my church I am called an elder. In other traditions I might be referred to as a deacon.

It’s not the word so much as the relationship that it represents.

First of all, I apologize, I didn’t realize, even as long as I’ve been on FR, that this was posted on the “religion forum.”

All I know is this....I hate Barry Obama. No one, and I mean no one, can be the evil, America hating, muslim rear kissing, fool that he is.

I just don’t like our side giving fodder to his.

MEG - see my post 59 above. Mormonism’s use of the term ‘brother’ in this context is not a RELATIONAL one but a GENETIC one. You and I recognize that our ability to relate to Jesus as our “brother” is based upon our adoption via salvation, just as I could relate to you on the basis of being a fellow Christian. This is not the meaning mormonism places on the term in the same context. Mormonism’s definition is a literal, genetic brother having been ‘begotten’ by the same ‘father’ and that ontologically we have the same essence or the nature of being as Jesus.

It rained here all morning...

Lightning and thunder...

About the only place theres no draught...

So I fired up the sewing machine out in the sunroom...

When I sew I lose track of time...

I sew till I’m finished...

Neither Obama nor Willard know how to make anything themselves...

I just came into my office to check the Internet and see if the Romneybots had committed group Hari Kari as yet...

Re old english carol...

I was responding to this from the original post, showing an earlier credit:
...It is apparently Orson Pratt, then, who should be credited with the first attempt to...use the title elder brother as applied to Jesus.

Although upon closer read, it might be referring to the first LDS attempt.

Not sure what the original 12 century French said, either.

Sneaking on to FR while at lunch. Don't have time to answer the other questions. Not sure if I will get to them later, but I will try.

At least Mitt has a religion..Obama’s only religion is himself.
___________________________________________

No

Obama has the same religion that Willard has...

His mother Stanley Ann Dunham was dead dunked into Mormonism June 2008...

Then Stan Ann was married to her polygamous lover, Barak Obama Sr (Mormon temple wedding)

She received every endowment that the mormon religion has...

and was “sealed” to her chiulokdren, making them full temple worthy Mormons also...

Having never set foot in a Mortmon temple of paid one dime of tribute errr tithes and offerings..

According to the mormon beliefs which Willard belives in, these dead dunkings, marriages, endowments and sealings CANNOT be undone...

So if you have that much “respect” for Willards since birth religion, mormonism, which goes back to his polygamous ggg grandfather with his 12 wives who came to Utah from England about 1830, and his other polygaMOUS ggg grandfather Parley P Pratt, WHO WAS KILLED BY THE UPSET HUSBAND OF A WOMAN HE STOLE AWAY...you will no doubt not say anything untoward against his fellow Mormon, Obama...

Willard takes his religion seriously...

He understands and believes that Obama was the FIRST Mormon president...

He has said often enough that he believes the “faith of his fathers” and this is a major part of the rites of Mormonism...

Universal “atonement” making everyone who ever lived a Mormnon regardless of their own reliGIon of choice while they were alive...

Stan Ann died an atheist before she was dead dunked in a few Mormon temples...at least THREE...

Willard himself has been a proxy dead dunkee for severaL dead people so he understands the process that the Mormons have invented also...

Besides Obamas mother, millions of other people have been dead dunked (necro baptised into Mormonism...)
If theyre listed in the Mormon IGI International Geneological Index its becaquse they were dead dunked...
Jesus Christ dead dunked to “save” Him and He was temple married to Mary Magdalene ...
Hitler and many of his Jewish victims including Ann Frank,
Vlad the Impaler, and other evil people in history
ALL of the Founding Fathers,
many people who died as beliving Christians and would have hated Mormonism including ancestors of mine,
several presidents and famous people including movie stars,
Catholic popes and Father Damien was dead dunked and married to some woman he had never met...Lucky him...a wife for the Mormon afterlife...

Yes Obama has a religion...Mormonism...

Mormonism is higher than any other religion to a Mormon...

Thats what Willard believes...

....see if the romneybots had committed group hari-kari yet

not sure if the slc "prophet" has placed the koolaid order yet...if he does, don't be surprised when a lot of nonmormon freepers follow whatever the "prophet" tells them...

I know that's already true among the mormon faithful...in the early 1960s a survey was taken of lds: how many would submit to polygamy if their "prophet" told them to? Answer? 40%...that probably matched what the temple rec % was at that time...so if the question was asked today you would probably get 15 to 20%...what the temple rec% is now

And B.Obamas intimidate ancestors believed that Jesus did not die on the cross
_____________________________________________

Well Obama is a Mormon and I dont know what he believes...

But yes Willard and his Mormon ancestors dont believe that the LORD Jesus Christ shed His Blood on the Cross and died on the Cross to save us...

They think thats yucky...

They believe that their mormon jesus sweated in the Garden of Gethsemenee to “atone” them...they dont call it SAVED or BORN AGAIN like Christians do...

In fact their version is so watered down that instead of wine or grape juice they have water for their” sacrament”... They dont call it Communion like Christians do...

If freedom of religion exists, it must exist for the Romney family as well.
_____________________________________________

I do hope you have told all the Romney males...Bigoted Willard and his 5 boys what you think of their going about knocking on doors to deny Christians freedom of religion when they demanded that the people convert to Mormonism...

I do hope you said to Willard for instance...”If freedom of religion exists, it must exist for the families of France as well.”

You did didnt you ???

After all, Mormonism existed long before Romney became a candidate.
_________________________________________

But candidacy for president by a Mormon started with the very first Mormon, Joey Smith himself in 1844...

He crowned himself king of the world and said that to rule America was a Mormon thing...

PING to Colofornian for the actual quote from Smith...

The Mormons also have a belief called the White Horse Prophecy that Joey Smith that made up that declares the Mormons will save America and the Constitution and will rule...

All Willard Romney is doing is what his father before him tried...

He really thinks he is the “one mighty and strong” from mormon mythology who will rule and reign over the American people and the world...

For Willard his ambition is more theocratic than political ...

He thinks he was born to reign in absolution over us...

His father groomned him from boyhood for his destiny...

As for tying this in to his ancestry...mitt has said he will not depart from the faith of his fathers...he said that december of 07

They would not listen, however, but persisted in their former practices.
Even while these people were worshiping the Lord, they were serving their idols.
To this day their children and grandchildren continue to do as their fathers did.

For me, I choose not to oppose a candidate based upon religious beliefs, unless those beliefs propose to directly attack the Constitution and laws of the US.

Yes it did!

As well as a LOT of ignorant CHRISTAINs about the HERESY that is MORMONism.

We owe Mitt a BIG favor for getting us off of our lazy butts and informing the WORLD of this GROWING threat to human souls.

(And to our ex-mo Brothers and Sisters who have LIVED the lie and were DELIVERED from it before I ever showed up on the scene!)

I, however, will oppose false teaching whereEVER it rears it's ugly head.

If a 'candidate' happens to be a practioner of these false beliefs; that is NO reason not to continue my quest.

Deal with what Harry Truman said:

Oh, please. Save your ridiculous BS. You're not fooling ANYONE.

These anti-Mormon threads started when Romney was running the first time. Don't pretend its a big coincidence you were suddenly "called" to denounce the horrors of Mormonism and it was completely independent of Romney's run. And then hide behind the Religion Forum ruse when you get called on your blatant dishonesty.

Its not possible to miss all the same flying monkeys congregating day after day, with the same theme, when you enter the site in "Latest Posts".
