A vegetarian? He berated a friar for wanting to abstain from meat on a feast day and said that on Christmas he would smear the wall with meat.

Bingo.
Bravo Ruy Dias de Bivar! You're just doing the Lords work. But it takes more than one individual to make a difference. You need to stand up in church and give testimony to your good deed so that all the congregation can likewise cast contempt on these people. And don't let them give you any of that "Love thy neighbor as thyself" doctrine either. These people don't eat pork and they need to know how the community judges them. Retell the story of how you found one in a closet eating pork in secret - that's my favorite.
Add my bravo for Ruy Dias de Bivar. The kingdom of God is not meat and drink, but righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost, Rom. 14:17.
This had to do with the conflict in the early days of Christianity between the early church and Judaism. That was what Judaism was all about, not eating certain foods, etc., the “law,” in other words, not about Christ, not about the bringing of righteousness, peace, and joy to mankind through the gospel of grace.
The story my mom told, she worked there.
There was a SDA man who worked at a local hospital and made sure everyone knew of his SDA affiliation.
When he went to the cafeteria he would snerl his nose and ask in a loud voice...”You got any of that old PIG in here! I don’t eat any of that old PIG!” He said it in such a way he spewed lots of spittle over the sneeze guards over the food.
Often a patient will order food and then not eat it. This food is returned to the kitchen and put in the garbage. One day someone ordered a pork chop and did not eat that meal.
An orderly went into the linen closet to get some fresh linen, and there was the resident SDA employee hiding with his lips and teeth firmly wrapped around the pork chop.
Despite what Rom. 14:17 says, you are saying the kingdom of God IS meat and drink? Righteousness comes through not eating meat? in this case, pork?
**** so that all the congregation can likewise cast contempt on these people. And don’t let them give you any of that “Love thy neighbor as thyself” doctrine either.****
Don’t have to worry about that. The Cabbage Crunchers would not get off their dead butts to help two little “Pork Rind” boys who were lost in a rainstorm several years back, because it was a Saturday.
They ended up at my house soaked and looking for help so we took them in, dried them off and got them home safely, on that same Saturday.
Post 28 gave questions for you to answer to your own satisfaction. We are saved by grace not works. To WHOM does God give grace to? The obedient or disobedient? Again find answers that you feel comfortable with. And finally ask yourself if ,by perchance, you find yourself in heaven having a discussion with Adam and Eve about what difference does it make what a person eats or doesn’t eat . . don’t be surprised if they have a story to tell you about how wrong they were also.
Thank you for that. I feel better. I know you do as well.
I don't understand what you're saying here. God specifically told Adam and Eve not to eat from that tree. God specifically declared formerly "unclean" food to be "clean."
Your fight is with God not me. If you read it the way you say, I guess you're good to go.
A lot of hypothetical stuff you are posing. I could pose the same to you, you know. Finding yourself in heaven having a discussion with the apostle Paul, I would hope you’d ask him what he meant in Rom. 14:17.
The matters of eating and drink should be of little consequence to one who seeks eternal life. Righteousness, peace and joy is of far greater import. I believe this to be the crux of that verse. Jesus was an observant Jew. He did NOT break the Law in any way. He is our Example. Go in peace.
I’m not fighting with anyone. God was explicit. You’re telling me He wasn’t. Clarify.
All this religious talk about clean and unclean foods reminds me of an old MARK TWAIN joke.
A parson is walking down the street and sees an old colored woman sitting on the curb smoking a pipe.
He says...”Mrs Jones, you should not be smoking a pipe! What if the LORD called you home tonight. Would you want to appear before HIM with tobacco on your breath?”
She says...”well Parson, If de LORD calls me home tonight I recon I’ll jest leave my breff here.”
Tell me, if the Lord calls us home will we be taking what we ate with us?
That is a very good point. And it really hits at what this really all about. All you will have left is your soul. This is your character and how you dealt with life and other people. The WHOLE point of Romans 14:17 is that food and drink are insignificant compared to eternal life. A person should be willing to forgo some of the enticements of this world to show obedience to God. That’s the point of fasting. Fasting does not make one holier than his neighbor but it refreshes his soul and makes him closer to God.
