Yes, he was born and raised in miserable circumstances, but he's had plenty of time since then to grow up.

Yes, but ....

For emotionally crippled people, recovery isn't simply a matter of "grow up and snap out of it." Some people are scarred for life. Many act out or compensate in a wide variety of ways. There is a huge gray area here, but politicians as a class are somewhat suspect, and the more driven they are, the more one suspects that there is something wrong at the core.

Radical movements in particular are heavily overpopulated with behavioral and emotional basket cases. That is not to say that everyone who marches under a radical banner is dysfunctional -- that is certainly not the case, but it is equally clear that dysfunctional types are disproportionately attracted to political radicalism ... some combination of therapy and "the god that failed." Obama does not seem to be an especially extreme case, but the coldness, the arrogance, the narcissism, the (usually) masked anger, the obvious contempt for adversaries, the contempt for the truth ... these are all classic markers.

Psychohistory is a tricky subject and it is best to resort to such methods as a last resort. But from time to time, we are confronted with folks whose behavior is outside normal ranges. Obama strikes me as borderline, but the artificiality of his public persona and the fierceness with which his past is guarded raise big red flags that something is amiss. But you already knew that.

One of my disappointments with Obama is that he hasn't used his bully pulpit to preach on the importance of fathers. He may have touched on it from time to time, but he is uniquely placed to carry the message where it is needed most. No government program in the world would do as much for the underclass as a reduction in illegitimacy rates. I wonder if Barack understands this. He should, but he chooses transference and projection instead.

I have compassion only for those that act in (take out their frustration on themselves), not out. If you feel you must be destructive, don't take it out on a bunch of innocent people.

Bears repeating. Spot on.
