William Hill, Britain's largest bookmaker, offered odds of 3/1 against for Nigerian Cardinal Francis Arinze, who is 80 and was once the world's youngest bishop. Odds were set at 7/2 for Canadian Cardinal Marc Ouellet and Ghanian Cardinal Peter Turkson. Irish bookmaker Paddy Power had the same trio as frontrunners, but made Ouellet the favorite. Britain's Ladbrokes had Turkson the leading contender. Other possible successors include Cardinal Angelo Scola, the archbishop of Milan, Cardinal Christoph Schoenborn, the archbishop of Vienna and Cardinal Oscar Andres Rodriguez Maradiaga of Honduras....

....Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York is a “long shot” at best, Reno said.

It has to be someone who is not going to be squishy on teachings. IOW no political correctness to make the left happy.

I have read two interesting things about the workings of conclaves, with respect to selecting a new Pope.

The first is--if all other things are equal between two candidates--is that they often favor a short-long-short cycle when it comes to the length of their tenure. If we followed this logic, John Paul II had a long reign; Benedict had a relatively short reign; the next Pope might be a younger one, capable of a long reign.

The second thing I read was this: any one going into the conclave expecting to be Pope, typically comes out as a cardinal.

I want to see a younger African who is doctrinally conservative. Arinze is a good man but is old. Forget an Italian, forget the Austrian, the Canadian might be good.. but an African will knock it out of the ball park. Leave our Uncle Timmy here in New York—we like him.

As the man says, an African will knock it out of the park for a touchdown, all others are either going to miss the boat or are already under the bus!

I think they should pick an Arab for Pope. Imagine if the Patriarch of Lebanon was elected, he’s a 72 year old Cardinal.

It could carry as much symbolism as when John-Paul II was elected in 1978, not to mention be a beacon of hope for Christians in the Middle East.

Pope Benedict XVI watches the movie "Karol, un uomo divenuto papa" ("Karol, a man who became Pope"), to remember the late Pope John Paul II at the Vatican in this May 19, 2005 file photo. Pope Benedict said on February 11, 2013 he will resign on Feb 28 because he no longer has the strength to fulfill the duties of his office, becoming the first pontiff since the Middle Ages to take such a step.

“Vicar of Christ” Walter F. Murphy (very enjoyable book, even if the premise is VERY unlikely to happen)

I bet their caller ID at the Vatican is blocked to Bill Clinton who keeps calling to ask if they would choose him.

I don’t think the Protestants and the other non-Catholics realize that this ain’t no joking matter. If we’re going to pull Western civilization out of the gutter it’s sinking into, it will be very important to have a strong, conservative, faithful Pope. And the same thing among Protestant leaders.

If half the Catholics in this country voted for Obama, it’s because they have been poorly led and poorly instructed for the past 40 years or so. There was steady movement in the Church from the Democrat party—which used to be the party of the working class to which most Catholics belonged—to the Republican party, owing mainly to Roe v. Wade and the movement of Democrat politicians toward all kinds of anti-Christian positions. But that movement has slowed, I think.

We desperately need better leadership: A good, strong Pope who will appoint better bishops, who will clean up the seminaries and the nunneries and the Catholic schools. That won’t just help the Church and its members; it will also help the entire country and Western Civilization in general.

Speculation mounts on who will be next pope

Boy, if I was any good at Photoshop, I'm modify the pic of 0. shooting "skeet", add in the peaked pope hat.

A fully authentic baptismal certificate would be produced from somewhere in Hawaii, backdated to 1961. He's be elected to the College of Cardinals on the basis of voting "present" a lot. Then his charisma would knock them over. He's in!

I think St. Malachy called this one “early” for Peter the Roman (ie Turkson).
