The Dark Side of Wives Submitting to Husbands

During a past ministry trip to Hungary, I heard a painfully familiar story. Through a translator, a tearful young woman living near Budapest explained that her Christian husband was angrily demanding her absolute submission. This included, among other things, that she clean their house according to his strict standards and that she engage in sexual acts with him that made her feel uncomfortable and dirty.

This lady was not demanding her rights or trying to be disrespectful. She was a godly, humble woman who obviously wanted to please the Lord. But she had been beaten to a pulp emotionally, and she was receiving little help from her pastor—who was either unwilling or unprepared to confront wife abuse.

I've heard so many sickening versions of this scenario. In Kenya, several women told me their AIDS-infected husbands often raped them—and then their pastors told them they must submit to this treatment. In some parts of India, even some pastors believe it is acceptable to beat their wives if they argue with them or show any form of disrespect. And in some conservative churches in the United States, women are told that obedience to God is measured by their wifely submission—even if their husbands are addicted to alcohol or pornography or if they are involved in adulterous affairs.

This distortion of biblical teaching has plunged countless Christian women into depression and emotional trauma. I'm not sure which is worse: the harsh words they hear from their husbands or the perverse way the Bible is wielded as a leather belt to justify domestic abuse. Here are three truths we must uncover in order to solve this problem:

People who only follow 1/2 of the command ought to be horse-whipped and then taught the whole thing. The wife is the weaker vessel and ought to be protected.

This Christian man doesn’t care much for submissive women.

Not exactly treating her as he’d treat himself. Interesting how some men forget that part.

A man who mistreats his wife and does not love and cherish her is man in name only.

Like so many today, it seems that you don't really understand what is supposed to happen.

The wife is supposed to be submissive to the husband, and the husband is supposed to love his wife. Now a loving husband wouldn't ask a wife to do something she really didn't want to do, now would he?? It's a 2 way street. (Or a circle of love)

Love your wives just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy...

Jesus loved the church in the ultimate submission...unto death on the cross. I say these instructions tell the husband to submit to even a greater extent than the wife. It is not a contest, it is being Christlike in your words and actions towards the one who Christ has made you one flesh with.

Eph 5: 22 Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.

25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26 to make her holy, cleansing[a] her by the washing with water through the word, 27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. 28 In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Christ does the church— 30 for we are members of his body. 31 “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.”[b] 32 This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church. 33 However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.

Just what part of

(Ephesians 5:25) Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;

do these husbands miss?

The only husbands that deserve a wife who will submit to them is the husband who loves his wife as Christ loved the church.

These men are not walking like Christians and you can’t see Christ in them at all . Big difference between religion and relationship.

These men do not deserve a wife.

There are TWO parts to this. Husbands have a DUTY also

22 Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord.

Most of the time these problems are created by both parties.
“Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives; While they behold your chaste conversation coupled with fear.”

Interesting how some men forget that part.

The anti-Christian types have been pushing their purposeful misinterpretation of this passage from Colossians for years, so as to promote their anti-God views. They thrive on misinformation.

I had to go read the article to get a handle on what was being said and by whom.

Charismatics have a "I'm better'n you" kind of attitude because the charismatic 'speaks in tongues'

The charisnews throws "traditionalist" out like it's a curse word.

No where was "fundamentalist" indicated.

I have no idea what a traditionalist is.

The article appears to be something written because an editor wanted an article, so the author thunk one up.

Christian men .... let me repeat that ... CHRISTIAN .... MEN ... have a biblical viewpoint of the world and how we're supposed to live in it, and I am so grateful for MY submissive wife ... she can have .. and gets ... any thing she wants. She is SO worthy of my respect for her.

The ladies in our independent, fundamental, Baptist church are held up in honor ... 'cause we don't eat if'n we don't. (jus' 'cause they're Christian ladies don't make 'em any less prone to deal with us men in the flesh.)

Reading this article wasted MY time ... maybe someone else can appreciate it.

These women are not being asked to be submissive, they are being subjugated....

A Christian man knows he is part of a holy union submitted under the Lordship of Christ and his wife is flesh of his flesh.....and she deserves to be treated as such....

The only question a man needs to ask himself is how would Christ treat his wife....

I know someone who was once married to a man like this (and he was of Indian descent). Her pastor (ha!), from whom she sought help, was less than useless and was the reason she stayed as long as she did. But thankfully she got out.

Unless I’m missing something, the bible says “Wives, submit yourselves to your husbands.” Husbands are also supposed to submit themselves to their wives. It isn’t about controlling the other person. It is about learning to submit yourself to God and your spouse. It is about learning to live in the Kingdom of Heaven, following the example of Jesus Christ.

That makes more sense to me than this so called "Submission". Iffin Jesus had a wife, I doubt he would have any issues with doing the dishes sometimes.

My wife has the real “power” in our marriage. She treats me like a king and I’m willing to crawl over broken glass for her. I never ask her to do something that goes against her principles or against God’s will for us.
