SBC leader says Russia isn’t pro-family, despite anti-gay laws

The Southern Baptist Convention’s top spokesman for moral and public policy concerns says Russian President Vladimir Putin lacks moral authority to criticize Western countries for abandoning Christian values.

“It really kind of makes my blood boil when I hear Vladimir Putin claiming to be pro-family values,” Russell Moore, head of the SBC Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission said in a Feb. 19 podcast titled, “Is Russia really a ‘pro-family values’ nation?

All of those were personal opinions of those who had a microphone in front of them and held an office within the SBC organization. NONE reflects the attitudes of SBC churches as a whole. I never cease to be amazed at the complete lack of understanding the news media (and others) have of the way in which the SBC works. The ONLY issues on which SBC churches agree is the Gospel of Christ and adherence to the Word of God. Apart from that, even SBC “leaders” are allowed freedom of conscience — even if some Freepers have forgotten what that means. Their views and opinions are not reflected in the local body, or even on the SBC as a whole. Where other religions are now allowing that there are “multiple ways to Heaven”, the SBC maintains the Gospel of Christ. As I said, conservative.

The decision to allow the Boy Scouts to continue to use facilities is a local one. Each congregation has had to weigh the matter and decide whether to allow, as a way in which to potentially reach the lost, or disallow. I think you will find that the SBC is most concerned with spreading the Gospel of Christ. They do not dictate to churches what to believe, or how to conduct their internal affairs. If that now gets them labeled as “liberal”, so be it. Strange times in which we live.

Clarification: “They do not dictate to churches what to believe regarding social issues”. (Although the SBC cannot “dictate” anything to the local congregations, the SBC churches all maintain unity in their adherence to the Gospel of Christ. One will not find homosexuality preached as an “alternative lifestyle” in an SBC church.)

The critical thing in life, in religion........in everything, is not so much where you are right now. The critical thing is the direction in which you are heading. This is true for us as individuals and it's true for countries, also. Russia is heading out of darkness, out of a 75 year atheistic nightmare and into the light. That's the direction in which it is heading. We can quibble about where it is right now but its overall direction is unmistakable. The US, on the other hand, is heading in exactly the opposite direction. The darkness which grips this country grows deeper by the day.

Not welcome news for Freepers whose time clock is stuck on 1962.

I’m curious why, on what I thought was a thread on Russia, it is so hostile. There is evidently a lot more going on with this subject than I was aware of. I’m being reminded of how in the religion section, the American can often be treated as the foreigner, there is evidently subtext to this that I just didn’t know about.

Russia has existed in a very harsh geo-political environment since its inception and has survived many more centuries than our country, experiencing a much higher level of death, destruction, and suffering. It is a common fallacy to judge the rest of the world by our American experiment. Despite all the Orthodox, Fundamentalists, and Evangelicals, the population and culture of the United States, not to mention Western Europe, is hurtling toward Sodom and Gomorah. Abortion/Infanticide and sexual deviancy is celebrated in our country, albeit opposed by a strong minority, and the leadership of the SBC is offended by the Russian criticism ... well, is it misplaced ?

I suppose a Muslim Imam might be stronger on “Family Values” than Putin but Putin is actively encouraging childbirth and Christianity. On that front he is a heck of a lot better than the clown that we have.

You will just have to watch things unfold for yourself, it won’t be pretty, and Russia will never advance much beyond what they have always been, as far as freedom goes.

SBC is our second largest denomination, and they vote about 80% pro-life and Republican.

Russian family was ruined in a period of 1920-1960 the way it is done in US right now.
With a legacy like that you can’t expect wonders but at least they are moving in right direction.

What recent victories does the SBC have under its belt?

Well they may win one on the illegal immigration front if they keep supporting the Dem position of amnesty. /barf

I don’t follow the SBC very closely .... what sort of liberal things have they been up to ?

Their "marketing" program has been kicked into high gear since concerns over losses in membership became front burner for them.

They elected their first black president a couple of years ago - I believe solely out of PC motives. There's absolutely nothing wrong and everything right with a qualified leader getting elected president, regardless of race, but this was just too "markety" a move to be coincidence.

They've also been kicking around the idea of re-marketing their name by removing "Southern" from it. Sniveling, cowardly, worldly compromise.

You sure have a dislike for a denomination that votes about 80% pro-life conservative.

I AM Southern Baptist by heritage! If I wasn’t so grieved by what the LEADERSHIP is doing to it, I wouldn’t be so critical.

If that is the case it sure doesn’t show, that is some cynical, over the top anti-SB stuff, even bringing up the “black” member who was elected president in a negative way, without any fact posted to explain why we are supposed to dislike him.

A lot of people here don’t know that the members of the Southern Baptist churches are so conservative, and are the best voters we have.

Look at how harsh those posts are, so harsh that they lack credibility.
