I have been saying this too! Nowadays people make such a big deal about finding out by ultrasound whether their baby is a boy or a girl in the womb. They announce it to everyone and buy "girly" or "boyish" baby clothes and furniture. Why bother? If baby can decide to be whatever it wants, as early as three or four years old, and expect the world to go along, why saddle it with a label of girl or boy to begin with?

People should realise that the sex you develop as isn’t determined directly by your genes; it’s driven by the presence or absence of androgenic hormones (primarily testosterone and its derivative DHT), during a critical period starting about 6 weeks after conception and ending about 6 months after birth. If high levels of androgens are present during this time, you’ll develop as male, otherwise you’ll develop as female. Ordinarily, if you have a Y chromosome, your undifferentiated gonads will turn into testicles about 6 weeks after conception, which then promptly start churning out androgenic hormones, with the result that you develop as male. However, it’s the hormones and not the Y chromosome that drive male development (there’s a condition called Complete Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome which basically proves this to be the case).
Ordinarily this system works quite well, and genetically male people mostly do develop entirely as male. However, all it needs is for something to interfere with testosterone production at any time during that critical period early in life, and you’ll end up with a person who is, to a greater or lesser extent, a mixture of the two sexes. Genetic intersex conditions, for instance having an XXY karyotype, Kallman’s Syndrome, or Partial Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome, can cause this to happen. However, in recent decades, another factor has been present that should (at least in theory) be capable of causing intersexed development: synthetic hormones.
First developed during and immediately after WW2, synthetic hormones are the substances used in birth control pills and other forms of hormonal contraception, and as medicines to treat a whole range of “womens problems”. Just about every woman in the Western world ends up being exposed to these substances at some time during her childbearing years, and often that exposure can have lasted for years before her first child is even born.
So far I’ve established that there’s a known medical condition called “progestin induced virilization” in which a genetic female fetus partially develops as male due to exposure to synthetic hormones with androgenic properties. This is the only situation I’ve been able to find where any public admission has been made acknowledging that medical hormones have caused intersex-related disorders, however I’ve also established that a much larger number of biologically male people appear to have ended up with intersex conditions and gender dysphoria, due to exposure to an artificial estrogen called diethylstilbestrol or DES, that between 1940 and about 1980 was widely used as a treatment for preventing miscarriages and premature births.
By far the most striking thing about DES is its association with transsexuality. If what I’ve seen over the last 3 years is any guide, probably the majority of transsexuals born in the era when DES was widely used either know they were DES-exposed, or have symptoms consistent with DES exposure. It makes me think the whole transgender phenomenon of recent years could well largely be an inadvertent side effect of synthetic hormone use.
I’ve recently been made aware that there are also “third generation” effects, where the children of DES-exposed women are sometimes also born with intersex conditions or other abnormalities similar to those that often occurred with DES exposure (even though, with these 3rd generation cases, the mother’s exposure took place decades earlier). I also know that Jill Escher, a philanthropist and mother of two autistic children whose own mother was given experimental hormone treatment during pregnancy, is currently trying to highlight the potential of synthetic hormones to cause “epigenetic” effects that can persist for at least 2 generations. She thinks this might be the explanation for why rates of autism and a range of other serious psychological disorders have shown a dramatic decade by decade increase since WW2. I have to agree with her, except to add: soaring rates of infertility; the transgender phenomenon; low testosterone and undervirilization in males; and excessive masculinization and PCOS in women. I’m starting to get the impression that there’s a lot that we don’t understand about the potential transgenerational effects of synthetic hormone exposure, and, given that lack of knowledge, it’s probably not a good idea to be exposing women of childbearing age to them to the extent we currently are.

HughE, thank you for that reply. I think I’d have to say it is the best reply I’ve ever gotten here, and that’s really saying something.
What you say is quite interesting, and I do remember talk of DES and some bad affects it had on female children of women who’d taken it.
I can certainly understand feeling uncomfortable as the sex you are. I myself have often wondered if I wouldn’t have been happier as a man. However, I think I would have gotten into a lot of fist fights, so I’ve always put that on the other side of the scale.
Quite frankly I don’t really care if someone wants to “live as” a man or woman. What does bother me is surgery, people in the wrong restroom (ok, penises in the girl’s room, since that’s really it) and attempting to classify pre-pubescent children as some sex besides what they seem to physically be. (I understand there are some children with hermaphroditic issues, but I’m not talking about that. Those are difficult situations, although I admit they might be easier to deal with in the current climate. Which is good for those very few people.)

Sorry dude, or dudette, you can call yourself whatever gender you wish to call yourself, but do not expect me to buy into your delusions. Your sex is a matter of biological reality. It is not subject to change. I don’t care what you chop off, sew on, or what holes you drill in your anatomy, if the genes say you are a male, that’s all she wrote.
God chose 40 authors, over a period of a thousand and more years, to write 40 books, saying what he wanted to say to mankind, being “his word” and thus ... inerrant and infallible and authoritative.
This is the creator God of the universe who did this, making all things, seen and unseen, who knows the beginning from the end. His word is never outdated, because he is never outdated and he knows all things.

I admit that I have continued to have trouble understanding exactly what it means to “feel” that one is of a particular gender, whether that is consistent with one’s “equipment” or not. One cannot “feel” as though one has one set of equipment when a quick look can tell whether that is the case or not.
What does it mean to “feel” one is, say, female? It can’t mean simply one’s desire for sex with a male, as the “experts” have determined that it is perfectly normal to be attracted to females, males, both or neither. So sexual orientation is no longer a good indicator of one’s gender.
Just what is it that makes one male or female if it is not biology or sexual orientation?
