Hardly any Americans will know of Hilarion Alfeyev, 48, a Russian Orthodox bishop who acts as the "foreign minister" of his Church, but it is important that they do. He is a bridge between not just the Orthodox Church and Catholicism but a bridge between Russia and America.
As a Catholic American, I first saw him 15 years ago on a cold December day in Moscow. Hilarion, then 33, was already a rising star in the firmament of the Russian Orthodox Church.
He had done his graduate studies in philosophy at Oxford rather rare for Russian Orthodox Church leaders.
Back in Moscow, he had been named Secretary for Inter-Christian Affairs in the Department for External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate, meaning his task was to deal with Protestants and Catholics.
Hilarion had been sent to attend a special ceremony in the Catholic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Moscow. It was a small courtesy extended by the Russian Orthodox leadership to the Catholics, who number only a few thousand in that great city of 17 million...

What World War III, Is Putin going to take on the world with his 766,000 man military?
Why would a guy who is thought to have stolen up to 70 billion dollars want to mess up his deal?
On our Southern flank, I saw today at work that Aztlan/LaRaza is real.
Latinos are charging.
If he knows the west won’t lift a finger to stop him, he could take over the world.
Uh, - - - - World War Three started on 9-11-2001 - - - - .
Are you discerning some sort of a Tesla-Nostradamus connection here?
**I last saw Hilarion on July 13 in Moscow, at the end of his regular Sunday liturgy. We spoke briefly about working together on other common projects in defense of Christian values, including the establishment of a Russian Academy in Rome, similar to the American, French and British academies in Rome.
But I sensed that something had changed. Hilarion seemed weighed down with a sense of sorrow and foreboding, this even before the as-yet unexplained shooting down of the Malaysian airliner over Ukraine. He said he feared that the summer of 2014 might, unfortunately, go down in history as similar to the summer of 1914, which produced the First World War.
Hilarion is an important door between the east and the west, between Orthodox and Catholics, and between Russians and Americans. It is very good he is speaking for the first time to the Breitbart audience.
As editor-in-chief of Inside the Vatican Magazine, Robert Moynihan is one of the most respected Vaticanistas in Rome. He has been involved Orthodox-Catholic dialogue for much of the past 15 years. He has worked closely with Metropolitan Hilarion for much of that time.**

“Nato is to deploy its forces at new bases in eastern Europe for the first time, in response to the Ukraine crisis and in an attempt to deter Vladimir Putin from causing trouble in the former Soviet Baltic republics, according to its secretary general.
Anders Fogh Rasmussen said the organisations’s summit in Wales next week would overcome divisions within the alliance and agree to new deployments on Russia’s borders a move certain to trigger a strong reaction from Moscow.
He also outlined moves to boost Ukraine’s security, “modernise” its armed forces and help the country counter the threat from Russia.”
Your comment brought to mind something I saw yesterday. I saw an Hispanic kid, a young teenager, standing on a sidewalk in front of a store with his pants and underwear down to his knees doing his business. He was with a group of adults and they just stood and watched as if it were normal. This kid made no effort to shield himself in any way. In fact, he was facing the parking lot, so he was in full view of dozens of cars and passing traffic. This happened within feet of the front door of a business with clean public restrooms. In the past I’ve seen winos taking a leak, but this seemed much different. It was really brazen. I had the sense I was witnessing the new American reality, an ignorant, crude, third-world, impoverished reality.
The American 173rd Airborne already has 600 men in Poland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.
but Merkel and the US won’t even send a rifle to Ukraine
Without sending them weapons? Good luck. It'll be studied for years probably, Ukraine might not exist soon.
They are on the march.
Seriously.
He has been tireless in his defense of traditional Christian values, and in this effort he has shocked some western sensibilities, denouncing in very strong terms the ideology of the LGBT movement.
It is amazing how plain truth passes for "controversy" today. I never thought I'd live to see religious truth proclaimed in Russia and denied in the West. I wouldn't believe the former if it weren't for the starkly contrasting latter. I didn't believe our decline would be this rapid.
Your story has assured me completely that poverty or prosperity are a person's (or society's in larger scale) choice, and isn't an outcome of unfavourable circumstances.
Well they are ‘NEW’ bases so it would be the first time. ....Only since Ukraine has Nato been actively assessing the actual strength/weakness of it's forces. Which was fast proving weaker than strong...they're basically flying by the seat of their pants trying to position themselves...unfortunately admitted as much. This is to protect "Nato Member" Countries. Unfortunately Ukraine isn't so they are limited on what they can do there...at least for now....... Ukraine is in a pitiful condition militarily, according to Nato officials....a Nato source recently in Kiev.... "Their generals just want to blow everything up."
Meanwhile, and not given much press:
"US Senate Bill 2277 passed last week!.......a passage about as close to the US actually going to war....and we're financing the bulk of it to Ukraine Government to manage??????........that'll work real well I'm sure.
Supposedly this is 'to secure Ukraine's agricultural and gas reserves' in the Donbass region on behalf of...(and here comes the Corporate raiders as expected and according to US plan),....Monsanto, Quadrilla, Exxon and others. US control over Ukraine's energy infrastructure was also agreed and ratified last week.
Among significant items..... (eg. prepare a war-plan for a potential US-Russian conflict).... it authorises Ukraine receive 'thirteen different categories of lethal weaponry and military equipment' and that it is fast-tracked into NATO.
It authorises Ukraine to receive:
(1) Anti-tank weapons and ammunition.
(2) Anti-aircraft weapons and ammunition.
(3) Crew weapons and ammunition.
(4) Small arms and ammunition, including pistols, submachine guns, assault rifles, grenade launchers, machine guns, and sniper rifles.
(5) Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicles.
(6) High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles.
(7) Inflatable boats.
(8) Body armor.
(9) Fire control, range finder, optical and guidance and control equipment.
(10) Explosive disposal and improvised explosive device detection equipment.
(11) Mine detection equipment.
(12) Chemical, biological, radiation, and nuclear detection, testing, and protection equipment.
(13) Communications, logistic, combat support, medical equipment, rations, specialized equipment, and other defense articles, services, and training requested by the Government of Ukraine that the President determines to be appropriate.
No doubt now the US is supporting the war in Ukraine, as if we didn't know before.....rather like Russia saying it didn't have troops there either.
