MAINZ, Germany - Small groups of hardline Salafist Muslims have been patrolling the streets of a German city hoping to "influence and recruit young people," police said. The groups were seen in the western city of Wuppertal wearing bright orange reflective vests with "Shariah Police" on the back. "This was seen as a violation against Germany’s public assembly law and charges were filed,” police spokesman Andre Schwanicke told NBC News. Officials say they have increased the police presence in the city.

Meanwhile, a YouTube propaganda video from the German Salafist scene was posted online showing a poster with the English headline “Shariah Controlled Zone”, followed by images of Salafists recruiting young people and visiting gambling halls.

Knowing Germany, they had better get these muslims off the street before they come in contact with large groups of hooligans.

It would be nice if these clowns were met by German nationalists wearing brown shirts and explaining how Germans don’t need any social advice from seventh-century goat pluggers.

I live across the river from Mainz, so I can make a couple of comments on this.

First, any idiot who puts on a jacket or vest that says “Police” in any fashion and isn’t a cop....violates the law and gets dragged into court. If you use the word “security”...that’s ok. I imagine these guys will get smart after a couple of meetings with the cops.

Second, their methods might work on 13 and 14-year old Muslims in the area. But these seventeen year old teens....won’t take these guys serious.

Third, In the urban area of Mainz (center point of the city)....I’d say the density is around ten percent of the population. But the area is surrounded by pubs and beer gardens, where you will see various Muslim guys after work. They’ve worked through a hard physical day, and don’t usually tend to take this ethical police guys too serious.

Finally, somewhere in the midst of this....the German cops have to be asking...who arrived in the last year and started this line of religious indoctrination. It’s not a local guy or a new resident from Turkey....it’s someone who likely arrived in from Saudi Arabia. They will eyeball this whole line of change and how it started, and identify the source.

Muzzies in Germany pretty much go where they please & strike where they please. Germans are fearful of being called Nazis if they respond with force to thirdworld hooligans

Any counterattack by German skinheads would have been blared around the world as a “hate crime”.

Such would be a man-bites-dog story for sure.

The Salafists will only do their thing in majority-Muslim neighborhoods. A band of hooligans who get into a fight with Muslims in a Muslim neighborhood may find themselves quickly surrounded.

I have an oddly amused feeling imagining the “Shariah Police” running into a German chapter of the Hells Angels.

I used to go to Mainz quite often when I worked for IBM. Great city and especially nice to be there during Christmas time.

Mainz is just the byline. This happened (per the article) in Wuppertal which is thick with these kind of filth. Don’t think they’d try it in, say, Leipzig. Also, their vests actually said “Police” in English, not “Polizei” so I doubt it’s even illegal.

It seems to me a bright orange vest would just make a good target...

It’s illegal just by inferring the meaning. Way too many Brits and Americans around, and they’d ask the German cops if they were “associated” with them. It’s just begging for German cops to get frustrated and negative about the idea.

If you as an American....get a contract and teach here...then hand out business cards, with “PhD” or any US certification on it....German cops could be encouraged to come and let you know that it’s illegal as well (they have laws about how you advertise yourself in Germany). May sound crazy, but self-identification is one of those ten culture things in Germany (like “Sie” and “Du”), or just doing one of those bird-in-the-head finger things in your car toward someone....will get you a ticket for that.

I think they got nabbed on some public order charge, not the use of the English word “Police” - but that’s just my guess and in the end a minor point.

As to the use of academic degrees, I’m sort of familiar with that one :-). Using “Dr.” (only) is restricted to those who received a doctorate from a German university. If the doctorate is from a foreign university that needs to be added in parentheses. E.g, “Dr. (Univ. Cambridge)”. “PhD” is not German, so should be OK to use. Bottom line: it’s not legal to use German academic degrees in a way that suggests they were earned in Germany if they are from abroad, but with a suitable explanatory addition it’s perfectly fine. (Also, I really doubt the first action would be a visit by the cops (lack of manpower for that kind of stuff) - a letter from some municipal authority or the D.A.’s office is much more likely.)

Oh, P.S.: When you say “you as an American...”, well... ;-)
