Pope Francis, "If Mary is not your Mother, you are an orphan!"
Charisma News ^ | 9/5/2014 | Jennifer LeClaire

Pope Francis has been a breath of fresh air for many Catholics seeking greater liberty and a growing concern for conservative Christians who take issue with his comments about homosexuality and other cultural issues.

But the pontiff's latest statement is sparking an uproar from believers around the world. Pope Francis sent a tweet Tuesday that absolutely violates the truth of Scripture:

"The Christian who does not feel that the Virgin Mary is his or her mother is an orphan," Pope Francis tweeted.

As of the time I wrote this column it had been retweeted about 4,000 times and many of the responses were in appropriately unkind. It's not appropriate to attack the pope for his beliefs. It's more appropriate to share the truth...

No person here has truthfully dishonored Mary.
To quote John McEnroe: "You must be joking!"

That’s an excellent summary of the problem here.

It spreads the lie that you can be your own authority on what is true.

The only lie is that Protestants believe that they are their own authority.

That has been debunked time and again and denied by virtually every non-Catholic on this board, and yet, just like an urban legend, it keeps being spread around Catholic circles as if it were true.

It saddens me that some American protestants cannot appreciate these works.

Would you care to post links to support that contention?

Honestly, it's amazing that one's religious affiliation can tell someone so much about another person's ability to appreciate art.

Who knew?

Show us posts that dishonor Mary.

Links to such posts, too.

It isn't really about honoring or dishonoring her, but Roman Catholics' insistence that "real" Christians have to be Roman Catholic.

That's it in a nutshell.

Good job as usual, bb.

I can read it right here on FR. Do you like the Catholic art of, say, Giotto?

Additionally, it's interesting that their criteria about who a Christian is is based on how they relate to MARY, not how they relate to Jesus.

Jesus has been reduced to not much more than a window dressing by the Catholic church.

I'm still left wondering if there's any Roman Catholic who would take up the challenge to ignore Mary for a whole month and in lieu of the time spend on her, focus exclusively on Jesus.

IOW, give HIM the time, attention, praise, prayers, adoration, etc, that they give to Mary.

Here. Let me fix it for you.

“That has been debunked time and again and denied by virtually every non-Catholic on this board, and yet, just like an urban legend, it keeps being spread around Catholic circles as if it were true.”

Catholics worship Mary. That has been debunked time and again and denied by virtually every Catholic on this board, and yet, just like an urban legend, it keeps being spread around non-Catholic circles as if it were true.

Much better.

I am 70 years old and no Protestant I have known dislikes beautiful artwork. For myself, I do not like some. Looks like something a kid would do but that is just me. I love Bob Ross paintings and watched his shows.

I don’t care for art in general.

So, no, I can’t say as I prefer one over another.

Very little art impresses me, although I do have to say that The Pieta is one of the most impressive works of art I have seen.

Other than that, old paintings of gay looking men with glowing heads, don’t do anything for me.

Catholics bow down to her, in violation of the second commandment. Catholics can relabel worship as anything they want to deny the obvious, but bowing down is bowing down and that can be objectively seen by all.

If Catholics don’t consider bowing to, praying to, *adoring* someone as worship, then I guess they don’t worship God either.

Admit it, some RCs are "disturbed" because non-RC Christians don't believe as they do about Mary. It isn't really about honoring or dishonoring her, but Roman Catholics' insistence that "real" Christians have to be Roman Catholic.
Stop jumping to conclusions; you might land on your head.

Bowing to each other is a common greeting in half the world. Are they in violation of the second commandment? Words have definitions for a reason. They are not one in the same. Adoration is NOT the same as worship.

If I bow or kneel in front of a statue to pray, I may be praying to God, I may be asking a particular saint to pray for me for a special intention as I would ask a friend to pray for me. I do not think that statue has any powers on its own. It is simply a beautiful work of art that brings to mind that saint and helps me focus my prayers.

If a person were to kneel in prayer with a Bible in his hands, would he be worshiping the Bible? By your standards we would have to believe this is true because that is what it looks like. What if a person had just read some very comforting words in the Bible, closed it and gave it a little hug from joy, how is this any different from a person touching the foot of a statue of a particular saint they love? Again, it’s not the statue they adore but brings to mind the person in Heaven whether it be a saint that they can relate to that helps bring them closer to God.

(Let me finish that thought... sorry, my kids are a distraction!)
Or whether it be a statue of Jesus, Himself. I love gazing upon the many crucifixes I have around the house because it is an instant reminder of why I am here and puts me in my place. Again, being human, I tend to get distracted and caught up in my mundane daily life. That crucifix reminds that there is a purpose to everything. I do not worship the pictures of Mary and other saints on my walls. I do not worship the wood/metal/porcelain crosses on the walls. They just keep me from focusing on less important things in life.

...I love gazing upon the many crucifixes I have around the house ...

I got a kick out of my 4 year old when he asked my devout RC mother, "Grandma, why is YOUR Jesus still on the cross?"

There is nothing personal here. Your reference to your crucifixes reminded me of a significant moment in my life.

I really don't know if my mother is saved or not. She has died.
