23 “His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’

24 “Then the man who had received one bag of gold came. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘I knew that you are a hard man, harvesting where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered seed. 25 So I was afraid and went out and hid your gold in the ground. See, here is what belongs to you.’

26 “His master replied, ‘You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed? 27 Well then, you should have put my money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned I would have received it back with interest.

28 “‘So take the bag of gold from him and give it to the one who has ten bags. 29 For whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them. 30 And throw that worthless servant outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

The Scriptures were quite explicit about money-lending with regard to the People of Israel.
The Torah teaches first of all, that interest should NOT be charged for a loan if the loan is to another Israelite. It also is explicit about taking, as a pledge, a person's millstone or their cloak. The millstone was used to grind corn, and most people slept in their cloaks, so such a pledge would cause undue hardship.

However, there does not seem to be a prohibition on accruing interest by INVESTING. This is the "plain" meaning of the Parable of the Talents. The allegorical and spiritual meanings, of course, are much deeper, but as with all Scripture, it is best to understand the plain meaning first.

A "Talent" was a measurement of weight, and was used to count money. It was a LOT of money. Not only did the lazy servant bury the talent, thus exposing it to theft, he also turned around and BLAMED the master for his own sloth and ineptitude. Perhaps that is what made the master so furious!

In any case, the existence of a Banker who was a safe repository for money and provided interest on the savings is assumed in this parable. Jesus did not have to explain what a banker does in order to preach the principle to the people.

If you ever get involved in an argument with a liberation theologian who claims that Jesus was a socialist, this Parable is full of stuff that says He was NOT. :-)
