Why would anyone become Catholic?

Why would intelligent, successful people give up their careers, alienate their friends, and cause havoc in their families...to become Catholic? Indeed, why would anyone become Catholic?

As an evangelist and author who recently threw my own life into some turmoil by deciding to enter the Catholic Church, I've faced this question a lot lately. That is one reason I decided to make this documentary; it's part of my attempt to try to explain to those closest to me why I would do such a crazy thing.

Convinced isn't just about me, though. The film is built around interviews with some of the most articulate and compelling Catholic converts in our culture today, including Scott Hahn, Francis Beckwith, Taylor Marshall, Holly Ordway, Abby Johnson, Jeff Cavins, Devin Rose, Matthew Leonard, Mark Regnerus, Jason Stellman, John Bergsma, Christian Smith, Kevin Vost, David Currie, Richard Cole, and Kenneth Howell. It also contains special appearances by experts in the field of conversion such as Patrick Madrid and Donald Asci.

Ultimately, this is a story about finding truth, beauty, and fulfillment in an unexpected place, and then sacrificing to grab on to it. I think it will entertain and inspire you, and perhaps even give you a fresh perspective on an old faith.

Ephesians 2:19-22 the apostles and prophets are foundation. What does a foundation do? It upholds. It does not build. It is a support. It is not the builder, nor is it the focal point.

So too pillars. They uphold what is being built.

It is the Holy Spirit that draws people and builds the body of Christ. The keys to the kingdom of God are the scriptures. The binding and loosing is already determined and actually reads "having already been". The apostles nor anyone else can not determine who gets into heaven. God alone does that and that having been determined before time began.

Only God can forgive sins. The Pharisees were angry with Christ for that very reason. Jesus was forgiving sins and that was one of the indications they should have caught that He indeed was God. The apostles were not God and neither are the priests.

Try reading Ephesians 2:19-22, slowly and reverently. After you master that, try John 21:15-22; afterward try Galatians 2:7-8.

Galatians 2:7-8.

Peter was to preach the Good News to the Jews....that was the keys he was given.

Paul was to preach the Good News to the Gentiles. That was his "grace" given to him by Christ.

Notice in Gal 1:18 Paul went to Jerusalem to get acquainted with Peter. This was a get to know you meeting between the two.

Also note in Gal 1:19 Paul met James, the Lord's brother. Shoots down the thought that Mary remained a virgin her whole life.

So there is the Word.

Now, what say you?

When you build a building you start with the foundation. The apostles and prophets built the foundation. No one denies that. But was the foundation they laid constructed from?

Read it again. It does not say the apostles and prophets built the foundation. Ephesians says they are part of the foundation. Matthew has The Lord Jesus promising to build his church upon this rock, after he just gave the name Peter to Simon/Shimon.

it's also customary to name your denomination, sect, or group. You should know these scriptures back and forth.

I will not allow the truth to be a springboard for prot rants, tantrums and hissy fits.

I have explained this several times already. Someone needs to pay more attention.

then your position must be a very, very weak one if it can't stand the light of the debate.

it's very nice to hide behind such lofty rhetoric....reminds me of Obama. can't get the truth out of him to save your life.

May I remind you that the writers of scripture were Jews. Catholics trying to take credit is laughable. One only needs to compare the Douay-Rheims Bible to the Hebrew and Greek text to see they couldn’t even get translation done correctly.

Why do you divert into minutia? Do you think God didn’t know the difference? God said don’t eat the blood. That it was to be spilled on the ground. Now you’re questioning God?

Would you please give the passage from scrioture where that is found?

Right here; read it slowly and reverently . 17 These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee: 2 As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him. 3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent. 4 I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do. 5 And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was. 6 I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word. 7 Now they have known that all things whatsoever thou hast given me are of thee. 8 For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me. 9 I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine. 10 And all mine are thine, and thine are mine; and I am glorified in them. 11 And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are. 12 While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled. 13 And now come I to thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves. 14 I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. 15 I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil. 16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. 17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. 18 As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world. 19 And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth. 20 Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; 21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. 22 And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one: 23 I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me. 24 Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world. 25 O righteous Father, the world hath not known thee: but I have known thee, and these have known that thou hast sent me. 26 And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare it: that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them.

Read it again. It does not say the apostles and prophets built the foundation. Ephesians says they are part of the foundation. Matthew has The Lord Jesus promising to build his church upon this rock, after he just gave the name Peter to Simon/Shimon.

Paul uses the imagery of a building as he writes this passage in Ephesians. Note the words: built, foundation, cornerstone, building, built.

But we'll play it your way. What was the foundation of the apostles and the prophets? That foundation has to be something. What is the "having been built upon the foundation....." What is that foundation??

it's also customary to name your denomination, sect, or group. You should know these scriptures back and forth.

I've never seen naming your denomination as a requirement for posting, nor have I seen hardly any other poster do so. But for your curiosity my denomination is Christian.

Because the Catholic Church wanted power and knew that if scripture was available to the people they would find truth just as it hapened when they did get it. The prohibition made no distinction between copies with error or accurate copies so don’t give us the nonsense about keeping error out.

Thinking about sex is sinful; it seems.

You got that one right.

I've heard Catholics make the connection between Mary being sinless and that's the reason she had to be perpetually virgin, as if having sex with her husband was sin.

af_vet_1981 is very good about asking questions, but when you put questions to him/her he/she can't answer those.

It's time for you to start answering questions. You continue to dodge them. I think it's because you can't answer them without shooting holes in Catholicism.

But hey, maybe you and verga can start the no answer club on FR.

When you and verga can engage in honest debate, I'll reply back to you. Until then....I'm done with you.

Hmmmmm, I see no “one holy, catholic, and apostolic church” there. I see the ekklesia of Christ. Those called out by God to be members of the body of Christ. One in the Spirit cleansed by the shed blood of Christ. That “one holy, catholic, and apostolic church” thing must be made up by the Catholic Church.

if you are going to contest Peter bring the Apostle of the Jews, the chief servant Messiah chose, well it won't be from ignorance of never having been taught the truth.

You misquoted Ephesians and your addition made Peter the most chief of the foundation builders. You did that.

You're not making great sense about some posts. YOU brought up (by yourself and with no help from me) the subject of Peter being Apostle to the Jews. Are you hearing voices? You aren't listening to me at all. Why is it you are having trouble hearing me tonight and, rather, are quoting me for things I haven't posted?

No more insults are necessary from you to defend your religious preferences or slop hogwash toward my belief.

I've heard Catholics make the connection between Mary being sinless and that's the reason she had to be perpetually virgin, as if having sex with her husband was sin.

But as we both know this idea of Mary remaining a virgin is blown away in Galatians 1:19 where Paul writes:

But I did not see any other of the apostles except James, the Lord's brother.

Paul wouldn't make a mistake of calling the brother of Christ a cousin. He was too good of a writer and knew his Greek well. It's amazing how Catholicism falls apart under the light of Scripture.

Jesus is GOD...He makes the laws.....

And He cannot break them without denying Himself.

It's a logical fallacy claiming that God can do whatever He wishes.

God can't do everything and any argument based on that fallacious reasoning is doomed to failure before it even gets off the ground.
