Why would anyone become Catholic?

Why would intelligent, successful people give up their careers, alienate their friends, and cause havoc in their families...to become Catholic? Indeed, why would anyone become Catholic?

As an evangelist and author who recently threw my own life into some turmoil by deciding to enter the Catholic Church, I've faced this question a lot lately. That is one reason I decided to make this documentary; it's part of my attempt to try to explain to those closest to me why I would do such a crazy thing.

Convinced isn't just about me, though. The film is built around interviews with some of the most articulate and compelling Catholic converts in our culture today, including Scott Hahn, Francis Beckwith, Taylor Marshall, Holly Ordway, Abby Johnson, Jeff Cavins, Devin Rose, Matthew Leonard, Mark Regnerus, Jason Stellman, John Bergsma, Christian Smith, Kevin Vost, David Currie, Richard Cole, and Kenneth Howell. It also contains special appearances by experts in the field of conversion such as Patrick Madrid and Donald Asci.

Ultimately, this is a story about finding truth, beauty, and fulfillment in an unexpected place, and then sacrificing to grab on to it. I think it will entertain and inspire you, and perhaps even give you a fresh perspective on an old faith.

Are Catholics actually that shallow? So desperate to assign identity they take whatever fits their preconceived ideas and apply it?

Yes, I've noticed a lot of “overlap” concerning “progressives” and Catholics. Both groups share Alinsky debate tactics and hatred for personal study of the God's word (aka The Bible).

“The Bible that was in use in Luther’s time was the Bible of the Catholic Church. There was no other Bible. There were no Protestants.”

Too bad that’s not accurate. Medieval German versions had been in print since 1462. And the Bible was available in the original Hebrew and Greek both of which Luther worked from when he made his own translation. So no, the Latin Vulgate was not the only Bible of Luther’s time.

For me, this thread was very instructive on many points with this attribute standing out like a sore thumb, although I would use the word "disdain" instead of "hatred".

I've begun to wonder why some Roman Catholics who have posted on this thread come to Free Republic at all.

Catholicism IS the truth of scripture

Except for the non-scritural stuff the Catholic Church made up, right?

At that time, however, versions of the bible appeared that were in error and some actually had books removed from them (you know about those of course) hence the church, the defender of Christianity got a little touchy as to what was falling into the hands of the people.

Unbiased source, please.

Like liberal/”progressives,” Catholics can't defend their position so they must stoop to applying false labels to those who disagree with them.

They find this much easier than formulating a reasoned and logical argument.

....you don’t pick a trignometry book and study it trying to learn trig....you use the book with the guidance of a trig. teacher....works every time!!

If I understand you correctly, and please correct me if I’m wrong, you are saying The Bible (aka The Word of God) is equal to a textbook and requires a mortal human to make it understandable.

Do you really have so little faith in The Lord? I hope I’m misunderstanding you!

Additionally, if she had been sinless, she would not have died.

Are the books of the Macabbees infallible according to the Catholic Church?

The Jews Never accepted the apocrypha as part of the Old testament canon. Even the Jewish historian recorded as much. It's interesting how you switch from Macabbees into the Septuagint. The apocrypha was not part of the Septuagint.

2) Who will hear more of the Bible at church in a three year period, a Catholic or Protestant?

Most Bible based preachers include a sermon citing chapters/verses/passages/entire books of the Bible. They encourage to read those passages later.

Most Baptist Churches hold “Sunday School” before the Sunday service and “Wednesday Bible Studies.” “Sunday School” is often another word for “Bible Study.”

Nearly every Baptist Church I've attended provided a Bible Study plan to “Read the Bible in a Year.”

Do you really want to argue who will “hear more Bible?”

Incidentally, the first time I read the Bible completely through I had it on a computer screen parallel with Strong's Concordance and Matthew Henry's concise commentary. I was about 33 years old, I had left Catholicism at about 21 and had never actually read the Bible. I was very annoyed when I learned how far the Catholic Church strayed from the teachings of Jesus and His apostles.

....Jesus knew how to use metaphor and this WAS one of them.

why would be do that....why not just say these things should be used to represent who I am....He didn't, and for a good reason...He transubstantiated the ingredients into His Body and Blood......or don't you think He could do that???

He just doesn't want to do those naughty things.... Is this a parable; or an example of reading the mind of GOD

you said He couldn't....I merely said that He wouldn't...

didn't I read saomething about Jesus being taken into the desert and being TEMPTED BY THE DEVIL???

Was Jesus ACTUALLY TEMPTED or did Satan TRY to tempt Jesus unsuccessfully?

Careful with that reading. Soon you might start thinking. Rome don't like Catholics thinking for themselves!

oh for Heavens sake....He didn’t set us free to ignore the church that He founded and everyone do it their own way and since the 1600’s, that’s the way a lot of people see it. See what happens when you don’t follow h His established rules????

God did not spare Sodom. Why do you imagine he’ll spare Rome?

...that means that Mary has to handle approximately 139 'requests' per second! Purty good fer someone NOT 'devine'!

maybe she has office help....actually, as I have pointed out to you before, men have mere machines that can easily perform at that speed....how hard could it be for Jesus' mom? And don't forget, in hEAVEN A THOUSAND YEARS IS THE SAME AS A SECOND....

There were Catholics before the Only TRUE church was founded!

the first Catholics were there at the very moment that the true church was founded....they looked around and sure enough, there were no protesters!

What? Over 1,000 words of Scripture does not tell me what you understand all this to support.

Well if you don't like my Scriptures, you probably will not like these verses either, as certain also of your own poets have said

So are you answering yes, that an assured infallible magisterium is essential for the conveyance, determination, assurance and preservation of Truth, and that being the historical instruments and stewards of Divine revelation means that such possesses assured infallibility?

It sees to me you are articulate, intelligent, with an astute, agile, and facile command of the Scriptures and Biblical languages. If you are wholly convinced the Catholic Church is erroneous, and the Eastern Orthodox as well, why not be an advocate for an Independent Fundamental Baptist remnant that is the direct descendant of genuine apostolic New Testament churches ? And if not, will you in a sentence name which denomination(s) you deem acceptably authentic New Testament churches ? Is there a kosher alternative to publicly confessing Jesus is LORD and Messiah tomorrow in a local Catholic Church (assembly) ?
