Why would anyone become Catholic?

Why would intelligent, successful people give up their careers, alienate their friends, and cause havoc in their families...to become Catholic? Indeed, why would anyone become Catholic?

As an evangelist and author who recently threw my own life into some turmoil by deciding to enter the Catholic Church, I've faced this question a lot lately. That is one reason I decided to make this documentary; it's part of my attempt to try to explain to those closest to me why I would do such a crazy thing.

Convinced isn't just about me, though. The film is built around interviews with some of the most articulate and compelling Catholic converts in our culture today, including Scott Hahn, Francis Beckwith, Taylor Marshall, Holly Ordway, Abby Johnson, Jeff Cavins, Devin Rose, Matthew Leonard, Mark Regnerus, Jason Stellman, John Bergsma, Christian Smith, Kevin Vost, David Currie, Richard Cole, and Kenneth Howell. It also contains special appearances by experts in the field of conversion such as Patrick Madrid and Donald Asci.

Ultimately, this is a story about finding truth, beauty, and fulfillment in an unexpected place, and then sacrificing to grab on to it. I think it will entertain and inspire you, and perhaps even give you a fresh perspective on an old faith.

Was that just social chit chat or where you trying to make a point?

You called a published author with a Ph.D. a Hack. I was wondering what your credentials werre that you could make a statement like that.

That is not an attack.

When someone keeps posting "You are wrong" without a shred of reasoning why, it becomes funny, and then a bit sad.

Actually I am saving my breath, none of you will change your minds, and it is up to the Holy Spirit to change your hearts. Any thing I say more than "You are wrong" gives protestants the opportunity to blather on endlessly.

What would please you? A fractal??

Well, one maybe, but make it repeat only a few times. Too many fractals can contribute to eyestrain and I have cataract removal scheduled next month.

BTW, wife was raised a Wesleyan.

My own educated opinion.

Fixed it for you. No evidence to the contrary was presented.

What does the Bible say?

"And when he had taken it, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb. Each one had a harp and they were holding golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of God's people."

And they were given a half hour to do this...They then went out and created havoc on the world including the Catholic religion...

You probably don't even realize you are grossly perverting scripture by using that cherry picked verse to defend your religion...

Your catechism is nothing more than a perverted commentary on some of the scripture...

Pick up a bible...read it for yourself...Learn what God really says...

So I checked out your website and noticed a whole section devoted to “debunking” Catholicism. Do you have a day job or is evangelizing all you do? And what denomination do you belong to?

“When someone keeps posting “You are wrong” without a shred of reasoning why, it becomes funny, and then a bit sad.”

Agreed. But too often, religious beliefs are held because they were taught and not because of evidence, logic or facts + thinking. I don’t take anyone seriously, unless they can form a factual argument that demonstrates thought. I will refrain from naming names. Once they call names, it is certain they are simply opinions and that is as deep as it goes.

“Both RCs and non-RC Christians on this thread believe we are contending for the Faith in some obscure but important way on this electronic forum.”

I think it is useful to take a step back and remember that these same issues have been argued for centuries between the same groups with no resolution or coming together moment. They will not be resolved here.

“When every knee bows and every tongue confesses “Jesus Christ is Lord”, most participants on FR here will have all our opinions overshadowed (forgotten) and replaced by The Truth; He’ll set the world straight, just as the Holy Spirit does now for followers of and believers in The Lord Jesus Christ. “

The Truth wins out.

And I repeat myself. Facts are facts and you still ignore the facts. Those 27 books are there because THE CATHOLIC CHURCH put them there!

And what denomination do you belong to?

I've seen this asked of others repeatedly by RCs on this thread and am curious why it matters, if only RC is Christian, as one RC cleric opined here.

Is it so that the non-RC poster can be pigeonholed?

FWIW: Non-denominational Christian. Which can mean a myriad of things and is not really easy to pigeonhole. But you weren't asking me.

-— You and other Catholics have been given the chance over and over to respond with the NECESSITY of your traditions; but you fail to do so. -—

I understand why you want to change the subject, since “the Bible alone is the SOLE rule of faith” isn’t in the Bible.

Regardless, the necessity of the Church, Oral Tradition and Scripture with respect to doctrine is supported by the Church, Oral Tradition and Scripture.

Even under your non-biblical doctrine of sola scriptura, the position of the Catholic Church is justified.

Just go to Bible Gateway and search on “tradition” and “church.” I know you can search on “Scripture.”

“P.S.: Paul’s statement was in the context of all the apostles in communion with Peter as Head of Christ’s Church who could not err in teaching contrary to the Faith.”

Keep reading further on in Galatians and you will find that to be false. On the contrary, Paul made it clear concerning where he got his gospel:

NOT from man
NEITHER through man
BUT through Jesus Christ and God the Father

Not/Neither/But. This formula is repeated two more times in the letter.

He goes on to say that God shows no partiality and SPECIFICALLY in the context of the other apostles “who seemed to be influential”. Seemed? He daringly, parenthetically, then says “what they were makes no difference to me...”

It gets worse.

He then PUBLICLY rebukes Peter for not acting in accordance with the truth of the gospel (for hypocritically withdrawing from the Gentiles and fearing the circumcision party).

Paul is the apostle to the Gentiles because the Lord Jesus Christ CHOSE him to be.

The please show another infallible source for what the apostles taught. We do know that anyone who teaches something they didn't is to be considered accursed.

In my case I left the Catholic Church based on ignorance, and emotion, but returned based strictly on evidence, logic, and facts + thinking.

“”Mary is the intermediary through whom is distributed unto us this immense treasure of mercies gathered by God, for mercy and truth were created by Jesus Christ. Thus as no man goeth to the Father but by the Son, so no man goeth to Christ but by His Mother.” (Vatican Website: Encyclical of Pope Leo 13th on the Rosary, Octobri Mense, Pope Leo XIII, 1903-1914)”

Catholic FReepers, please tell me you don’t believe this! Seriously, if you do...repent (change your mind) of it.
