It's difficult for me to discern whether they really and truly believe what they're posting or whether it's just their job to hold up the RCC side on FR Religion Forum threads and they know it's proven bunk.

Why should that be a concern of yours? Especially in the context of this mode of communication. Could it be that the cult of personality is inherent in Protestant expression and being able to divine motive/sincerity is explicit in determing truth. The Donatist tendency emerging most often expressed as, "he doesn't speak to me. I'm moving on to the next ecclesial community down the road."
