The wives have families and those families love their daughters. If a daughter is being abused, she tells her family as they don't lose touch. The abusing family suffers from the public shame of abusing a woman.

There was a time in Chinese culture when female babies were killed because boy babies were wanted, but that was China. I can't think of any other culture that did that.

Officially, China doesn't do that now because of their one-baby policy, but I'm not sure that I believe it. Muslims were never into any kind of abortion. It has always been an evil in those societies. They have always welcomed even the least-perfect babies.

I believe India also practices female abortion in order to have just sons.
