Bible's Most Popular Verse Is 'Be Anxious For Nothing', Says Amazon
Christian Post ^ | 11/9/14 | Stephanie Samuel

opular portion of the Bible is a verse urging readers not to be anxious, according to data released from online book seller Amazon. The online retailer recently released a list of the most popular passages from its most popular books.

Amazon's most popular books include The Hunger Games, The Harry Potter Series, Pride and Prejudice, and the Bible. It found that the commonly highlighted portion of the Bible is Philippians 4:6-7.

In the verses, the apostle Paul admonished the church, "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."

For those drawn to the verse because they may be dealing with anxiety or mental stress, Christian psychologist and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary professor Eric L. Johnson caution readers against taking the passage as a direct command.

He explained, "I think that what God is not saying to us is giving us a command that is to be implemented immediately because one of the paradoxes of anxiety is the more you try and stop it the more it makes it stronger and so I don't think we should interpret that as, you know, Paul is telling the anxious person just stop it."

TOPICS: General Discusssion
KEYWORDS:
I do take it as a command, and when I still find myself anxious then I think I won't be anxious about being anxious. It helps! I'm so thankful to the Lord for the gift of His peace and joy that I have so often now where I used to have so much anxiety.

Just as the holy spirit is a gift, peace is a gift.

Micah 6:8 New International Version (NIV)

8 He has shown you, O mortal, what is good.
And what does the Lord require of you?
To act justly and to love mercy
and to walk humbly with your God.

A place I worked at had a philosophy for this that is simpler.

LET GO, LET GOD.

Actually, it is a command. The greek tense of "be anxious about" is in the imperative tense. It is the tense of command.

in the greek it is rendered as: μηδὲν μεριμνᾶτε, nothing, be anxious about.

Disappointed that a professor wouldn't know this.

I don’t know that prayer (intense and often) helped my anxiety directly. I was in bad shape. But a beneficial side effect of a non-addictive prescription drug did help. Maybe the Rx came as a result of the prayer?

Is no one else troubled by the idea that Amazon is keeping track of what you highlight on your devices?

Amen! I myself am going througha difficult time. I am coming close to be homeless. I have this anxiety so bad yet when I pray it goes away and I am at peace. Then it trys to come back then goes away. The weird thing it is as if the Lord is telling and teaching me something.

I didn’t take it like that. Just that it’s popular among Amazon searches for Bible verses and thought it would be a good article to post here for that reason.

The verse itself is a lot simpler than this guy's "explanation."
