Christmas blessings, ping!
He taught theology to two of my boys. Good guy.
This is false. The Catholic Church has never taught that Jesus was born on December 25th. Any discussion that begins with a patently false statement is absolutely pointless.
The Catholic Church celebrates the birth of Jesus on December 25th.
Here’s an objection that’s not mentioned.
The Roman Census that required Joseph and Mary to travel WAS NOT in wintertime. Not December.
Why does it matter? Contemporary or Orthodox. The chasm is not that wide.
Does it really matter?
"How Many Angels Can Dance On The Head Of A Pin?"
What a waste of scholarship. I didn't even bother reading it, because I didn't want to lose any IQ points.
I read somewhere that Dec 25 is the first day AFTER the winter solstice where the sunrise was noticeably earlier than the day before—thus indicating the swing back from the dark.
I an not saying this is why Christmas is on that day. But rather, if you were going to celebrate the end of the darkness, Dec 25 is a good day to do that.

Yer good at this kind of stuff

I was watching part of a tv show about Christmas. It said December 25th was chosen by the Roman church to coincide with the feasts of Mirtha and
Saturn. The first feast may not be spelled correctly. Never heard of either but found it interesting.
True insanity has again descended on this forum!
Throw the ancient scriptures away, the gates of hell have prevailed, Sun god worship has replaced the only begotten son of God!
.
If the author wants to be absolutely exact he needs to tell us what December 25 he is talking about: the old, the middle, or the new December 25th.
Is it really that controversial?
The only people I know who object are the mouth-breathers who still think Zeitgeist was an earth shattering documentary.
I do think it’s possible Jesus was born a few years earlier (circa 4 B.C.) according to research.
Then again the guy who invented it 1500 years ago was pretty close all things considered.

The chasm is the gulf between Heaven and Hell!
December 25 is the traditional birth date of the sun god, in every pagan culture on Earth.

Hello Arthur
I just happened upon this thread, forget how, but I noticed you said you welcome honest questions from Freepers
Charismatic Catholics such as those at the Houston Charismatic Center, how do you feel about all that..
For full disclosure I am not a Catholic but only a Christian
Father Bob McDougal Father Bod Bedard , actually both with the Lord now were 2 of my favorite Christians...they had a show based in Toronto called Food For Life, still on the air now on Canadian television I understand, but much of the program comes right from Houston now, I watch it on line
Actually was hoping you were a believer in that respect
Fr. Mark Goring of Companions of the Cross is a wonderful Christian
I think a lot of Catholics here are against the Charismatic Movement in the Catholic Church, so was just curious
That is correct. I don't believe the Roman Catholic Church has ever taken an official position on the exact day and, further, the calendar changes which occurred subsequently could throw it off by two weeks or more which is, I believe, why the Orthodox Church celebrates it on January 6th.
Cromwell and his puritan allies did try to ban the celebration of Christmas with limited success in the 1650s because they bought into the 'pagan holiday' theory.
December 25th is not that far from the winter solstice and could very well be the first day that ancient pagans could actually tell the days were starting to get longer, so I do not believe Cromwell & crew's theory was completely without basis.
Whatever the motivation, the symbolism that Jesus came to earth at its darkest time and begin to lengthen the days is more important to almost all sects of Christendom than the actual day.
And the corollary to said symbolism is that he will return to earth again in its darkest days, the days which the odd alliance of godless humanists, liberals and Islamofacists are putting us on a course for now.
Everybody knows that tax time is in April, so I’m guessing the actual day was probably April 13th. :->

Only if you prefer Yehova’s rest over eternity in Hell.
Yeshua came to tabernacle with us (born) at Sukkot, and will return with his elect, to rule from the throne of David for 1000 years on that same time.
