Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Character Studies From The Bible

Jacob and Esau

New International Version (NIV)

10 Jacob left Beersheba and set out for Harran. 11 When he reached a certain place, he stopped for the night because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones there, he put it under his head and lay down to sleep. 12 He had a dream in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. 13 There above it stood the Lord, and he said: “I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you are lying. 14 Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south. All peoples on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring. 15 I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.”

16 When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he thought, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it.” 17 He was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven.”

18 Early the next morning Jacob took the stone he had placed under his head and set it up as a pillar and poured oil on top of it. 19 He called that place Bethel, though the city used to be called Luz.

20 Then Jacob made a vow, saying, “If God will be with me and will watch over me on this journey I am taking and will give me food to eat and clothes to wear 21 so that I return safely to my father’s household, then the Lord will be my God 22 and this stone that I have set up as a pillar will be God’s house, and of all that you give me I will give you a tenth.”

(Genesis 28)

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

"Jacob's Ladder" by William Blake

In the early 1930's a brilliant young theologian traveled to New York City to continue his already prestigious education at Union Seminary. While in New York, he became increasingly disturbed by the cold liberalism of academia, and would often wander to inner city churches to enjoy the fiery preaching and lively music.

Storm clouds were gathering, however, in his native Germany, and the young man felt that he needed to return.

His friends and associates noticed something very different about him upon his return. His preaching, teaching, and passion revealed a new man, one who would eschew academia by forming his own "illegal" seminaries, preach against the lukewarm and compliant German Church, become a double agent for the German Resistance, and eventually, be hanged for being implicated in an assassination plot against Hitler.

Like Jacob, Dietrich Bonhoeffer had a spiritual awakening at some point in his journey. Up till that point, both Jacob and Bonhoeffer lived by their wits and intelligence, trusting in their own study, or skills, to get themselves ahead in life. Although neither man became "sinless" after their "encounter", both became aware that they were involved in something infinitely larger than themselves, and were given a new outlook, new courage, and new direction. May we all have our "Jacob's ladder" Moment, as we see storm clouds gather right here at home.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

Just a foot note to your post as I heard this the other day, Dietrich Bonhoeffer knew by returning to Germany it could cost him his life but he did it any way because he cared so much for his fellow countryman.

Oh how I would like to get to the point that I could so fearlessly give my live for others. :)
Great post and asking God to bless you today (and always) for your faithfulness.

Thank You for your note about Bonhoeffer! I forgot to mention that. And, Interestingly enough, if Jacob had returned home at that point in his life, he too, would have been killed...by his own brother!

PRAYERS ASCENDING ON HIGH FOR
THE PEACE OF JERUSALEM!
And for the Preservation of the Valiant
Israeli Nation!

"JACOB'S DREAM"
Jusepe de Ribero (1609)

_ ND Jacob went out from Beersheba, and went toward Haran.

And he lighted upon a certain place, and tarried there all night, because the sun was set; and he took of the stones of that place, and put them for his pillows, and lay down in that place to sleep.
And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven: and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it.

And, behold, the LORD stood above it, and said, I am the LORD God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac: the land whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed;

And thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and thou shalt spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south: and in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed.

And, behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land; for I will not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of.

And Jacob awaked out of his sleep, and he said, Surely the LORD is in this place; and I knew it not.

And he was afraid, and said, How dreadful is this place! this is none other but the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.

And Jacob rose up early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put for his pillows, and set it up for a pillar, and poured oil upon the top of it.

And he called the name of that place Bethel: but the name of that city was called Luz at the first.

And Jacob vowed a vow, saying, If God will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and raiment to put on,

So that I come again to my father's house in peace; then shall the LORD be my God:

And this stone, which I have set for a pillar, shall be God's house: and of all that thou shalt give me I will surely give the tenth unto thee.

Thanks for sharing that enlightening fact of history, especially as we approach the 70th anniversary of the end of World War Two.

Joining in prayer, left that other site, for all God’s people - that we may have that boldness.

May God’s mercy and grace be shed on Israel and America.
