NewSpring Church is a Baptist Christian megachurch located in Anderson, South Carolina. The church was founded in January, 2000 by pastor Perry Noble. Weekly church attendance averages over 32,000 people per week.[1][2][3] It is the second fastest growing and fourth largest church in the Southern Baptist Convention. Overall, it is among the one-hundred fastest growing and largest churches in the United States and it is ranked as the second-fastest growing church in the United States. Commandment 6-10 all start with the same word. If you look at the tablets, you can see it, reading from right to left, even if you don’t read Hebrew.

The two letter word that starts each of the last 5 commands is “LO.” In Arabic the same word is pronounced “La”.

It means “NO!”.

We have translated it as “Thou Shalt Not”.

To this misguided pastor, I have only one question.

“What part of “No” do you not understand?”

In Hebrew, they are indeed referred to as “The 10 Sayings” (or more fancily, “Utterances.”

Strong's concordance H4687 is used in Deut 5:29. The Hebrew word is "mitsvah" (מִצְוָה). The root word in Strong's H6680 (tsavah; צָוָה).

Either way - the meaning is pretty unambiguous: command, commandment, precept, law, ordinance... with the root indicating a giving of orders, giving a command, giving a commission or charge. It's a word that sounds like there's an imperative action involved.

Both H4687 and H6680 are used in Deut 6:1.

But neither has a ‘what we believe’ section.

Christians beliefs are public, and any Christian ministry should let outsiders know what they believe.

Jesus was the only Man to walk the Earth that could obey/keep the Commandments. If we could do the same, He would not have had to die for us. Those who claim we must/can obey the commandments discount His death and Resurrection. In Romans, such folks are berated as having fallen from Grace because they are trying to be worthy by their obedience, by following the old ways, and not enjoying the fruits of His gift of loving Grace.

I happen to be a member/owner of NewSpring. Wikpedia is full of errors as many Freepers have often times noted. It said is is a Baptist Church, it is not. (Perry used to be a Baptist). For the past 7 years I have personally witnessed the jealousy and rivalry of people towards our fast growing church, much like Gamecocks vs. Clemson fans. NewSpring is far from a cult. The Bible is full of miss-translations. Would it not be better to go back to the original languages and thus the meaning and inferences of terms used? Many bible scholars have done this before and have gained a better understanding of God’s written word. For instance the Blue Letter bible site, lists Strong’s H1697- dabar. Look up the reference to the 10 Commandments, Exodus 37:28 for example in Hebrew it is a “saying or utterance” not “commandment”. Pastor Perry is a down to earth kind of guy, maybe that’s a gift for him to relate to people in this day and age where most churches are losing memberships and struggling. To take what he said and try to dissect and analyze based on false premise only propagates lies and is not much difference than what the media has done in the past...sensationalize. Perhaps people should listen to Pastor Perry’s sermons, before they jump to conclusions. Search out the truth.

My first thought is: if you don’t know what the Hebrew Torah means, ask a Rabbi. There are plenty of orthodox Rabbis that can explain and translate exactly the Hebrew language of the Old Testament.

I expect the SBC is not happy about this. They are, thank goodness, a pretty conservative group.

I'm always put on guard when a pastor begins a sermon with language like "God told me" or "God put this on my heart." It strikes me as a speaker trying to gain credibility. It seems to be a weakened form of a presumptuous "thus says the Lord." Few pastor would use the latter phrase but I've heard the former phrases many times, even from pastors whom I really like.

If God is really promoting this idea, the message will be heard by the listeners because the Holy Spirit will prepare them to receive the truth.
