Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Character Studies From The Bible

Leah and Rachel

New International Version (NIV)

31 When the Lord saw that Leah was not loved, he enabled her to conceive, but Rachel remained childless. 32 Leah became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She named him Reuben, for she said, “It is because the Lord has seen my misery. Surely my husband will love me now.”

33 She conceived again, and when she gave birth to a son she said, “Because the Lord heard that I am not loved, he gave me this one too.” So she named him Simeon.

34 Again she conceived, and when she gave birth to a son she said, “Now at last my husband will become attached to me, because I have borne him three sons.” So he was named Levi.

35 She conceived again, and when she gave birth to a son she said, “This time I will praise the Lord.” So she named him Judah. Then she stopped having children.

(Genesis 29)

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

The sad figure of Leah is explored in this brief passage. Even though she not loved by her husband, she has four sons in a row with him. Even to this day, there are people who think that having a baby will somehow heal a troubled marriage, and Leah's choice for the boy's names reflects that very thing. It is interesting that Jacob doesn't even seem to participate in the naming of Leah's children. We know, in retrospect, that the Tribe of Judah will produce the line that bears King David, King Solomon, and, eventually, Jesus of Nazareth.

When the Kingdoms split apart after Solomon, it is the Tribe of Judah that stays in Jerusalem, (and has a slightly better crop of kings), and it is from Judah that the Jewish People get their name.

It is Leah who is buried with Jacob in the Cave of Machpelah.

Although she was not loved by her husband (nor her younger sister!), she was definitely loved by God.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

Prayers lifted for all those persecuted Christians in the Middle East.

And for all those who, not knowing what they do, or that they themselves were also created by our Almighty GOD, persecute them.
