Answer the question. Where did the Catholic Church get it’s authority?
But NOWHERE was Sola Scripture was written
Where is Sola Scriptura in Scripture?
Mat 15:7"You hypocrites, rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you: 8'THIS PEOPLE HONORS ME WITH THEIR LIPS, BUT THEIR HEART IS FAR AWAY FROM ME. 9'BUT IN VAIN DO THEY WORSHIP ME, TEACHING AS DOCTRINES THE PRECEPTS OF MEN.'"
The christ that Rome professes is not the Christ of scripture, Salvation .
The christ of Rome does not save anyone, he is subject to the call and power of men
Mat 24"5"For many will come in My name, saying, 'I am the Christ,' and will mislead many.
Mat24: 23"Then if anyone says to you, 'Behold, here is the Christ,' or 'There He is,' do not believe him. 24"For false Christs and false prophets will arise and will show great signs and wonders, so as to mislead, if possible, even the elect.
You can’t do that. That is Sola Scriptura and you don’t believe in it.
Jesus Christ did one better...He told His disciples where to find it all:
Luke 24:
44 Then He said to them, These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me. 45 And He opened their understanding, that they might comprehend the Scriptures.
46 Then He said to them, Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, 47 and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48 And you are witnesses of these things. 49 Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high.
And then later, after Pentecost the apostles started writing it down.
What did Jesus Christ give as an authority?
Matthew 4:
4 But He answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.
On Jesus' views of the traditions of the magesterium at the time of His earthly ministry:
Mark 7:
5 Then the Pharisees and scribes asked Him, Why do Your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashed hands?
6 He answered and said to them, Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written:
This people honors Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me. 7 And in vain they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.
8 For laying aside the commandment of God, you hold the tradition of men the washing of pitchers and cups, and many other such things you do.
9 He said to them, All too well you reject the commandment of God, that you may keep your tradition. 10 For Moses said, Honor your father and your mother; and, He who curses father or mother, let him be put to death. 11 But you say, If a man says to his father or mother, Whatever profit you might have received from me is Corban (that is, a gift to God), 12 then you no longer let him do anything for his father or his mother, 13 making the word of God of no effect through your tradition which you have handed down. And many such things you do.
Pretty clear Jesus Christ had a VERY high regard for His written and spoken words. The Pharisees' man-made traditions could not muster an appeal to the Sola scriptura responses of Jesus Christ.
The Christ of scripture is a triumphal King sitting at the right hand of the Father having finished “once for all” the sacrifice. The Catholic Jesus is still being offered continually as a sacrifice. Not the same on at all.
Bravo..
You beat me to it.
And Catholics tell us to follow Jesus example right?
Should have said:
Catholics profess the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
But where did Christ tell anyone to write anything down?
Where did Christ tell anyone that His Religion would be based on a book?
Wrong. I accept Scripture. just not Sola Scriptura
I think it’s right in between He said smoking was a grievance and drinking makes a fool out of you
2 Thessalonians 2:15 So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold fast to the teachings we passed on to you, whether by word of mouth or by letter.
I am part of an apostolic church. A church founded by the apostles. When the scripture canon was set, they had several criteria.
A sensible list of criteria, used by Christians, to establish a canon. The interesting part is number 2) "Written by those associated with recognized prophet or apostle". This is direct relation, direct supervision, and direct connection. They only allowed one step. Someone who was directly taught by an apostle.
The council that established canon understood 2 Thessalonians 2:15 to apply directly to apostles or those directly under the apostles. Why should I trust the Roman Catholic Church that the correct interpretation of 2 Thessalonians 2:15 applies to them today?
I can not hear the words of the apostles or their direct students for myself except through the scripture. I will stand firm and hold fast to the apostolic teachings.
If you ask how I can know that the scripture is sufficient, I will cite John 20:30 Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
Jesus did a lot that was not recorded, but "these things are written." Self explanatory.
Why would we use scripture canon as a rule? Galatians 1:8 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed. Why should the Roman Catholic Church get a pass if even angels should be measured by the confirmed apostolic teaching.
Chapter22
6And he said unto me, These sayings are faithful and true: and the Lord God of the holy prophets sent his angel to shew unto his servants the things which must shortly be done.
7Behold, I come quickly: blessed is he that keepeth the sayings of the prophecy of this book.
8And I John saw these things, and heard them. And when I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which shewed me these things.
9Then saith he unto me, See thou do it not: for I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren the prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this book: worship God.
10And he saith unto me, Seal not the sayings of the prophecy of this book: for the time is at hand.
11He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still.
12And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be. 13I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.
Revelation 21:5 He who was seated on the throne said, "I am making ... ... Then He who was seated on the throne said, "I am re-creating all things." And He added, "Write down these words, for they are trustworthy and true." ...
Revelation 1:19 "Write, therefore, what you have seen, what is now ... ... Therefore, write down what you have seen, what is, and what is going to happen after these things. ...
Ezekiel 43:11 and if they are ashamed of all they have done, make ... ... Tell them about all its rules and regulations. Then write these things down for them so that they can remember its design and follow all its rules. ...
**word of mouth**
Holy Tradition
“...listen to them...”
Listening is not writing. Nowhere does the bible say that scripture alone is to be used to shape doctrine. Nowhere.
The Jews followed an oral tradition and the early Christians did as well. The gospels started out as oral tradition.
The bible does not tell us that it alone is sufficient for salvation; in fact it tells us the OPPOSITE:
2 Tim 2:2 and 2 Thess 2:15
Also: John 21:25
Matthew 4:1-11
Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. And the tempter came and said to him, If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread. But he answered, It is written,
Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.
Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written,
He will command his angels concerning you,
and
On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.
Jesus said to him,
Again it is written, You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.
Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to him, All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me. Then Jesus said to him,
Be gone, Satan! For it is written, You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.
Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him.
Luke 4:1-13 And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness for forty days, being tempted by the devil. And he ate nothing during those days. And when they were ended, he was hungry.
The devil said to him, If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread. And Jesus answered him,
It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone.
And the devil took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time, and said to him, To you I will give all this authority and their glory, for it has been delivered to me, and I give it to whom I will. If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours.
And Jesus answered him,
It is written, You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve.
And he took him to Jerusalem and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, for it is written,
He will command his angels concerning you, to guard you,
and
On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.
And Jesus answered him,
It is said, You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.
And when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from him until an opportune time.
