When they start talking about the Eucharist as a “cookie” and call us pagans, their anti-Catholic hostility is exposed and they lose all credibility with me.
I wouldn’t mind a serious discussion of doctrine with a respectful Protestant. But with this snarky little crew? No way, not until they clean up their act (and their mouth).
I pray for them, though.
Calvinism: because God predestined he wanted a kingdom filled with divisive and argumentative people.
Your threads [of this continual nature] are real downers. I hope you are not suffering ill health. God be with you this Holy Saturday.
The use of temples, and these dedicated to particular saints, and ornamented on occasions with branches of trees; incense, lamps, and candles; votive offerings on recovery from illness; holy water; asylums; holydays and seasons, use of calendars, processions, blessings on the fields; sacerdotal vestments, the tonsure, the ring in marriage, turning to the East, images at a later date, perhaps the ecclesiastical chant, and the Kyrie Eleison, are all of pagan origin, and sanctified by their adoption into the Church.[Cardinal Newman - Development of Christian Doctrine, pg 373]
And you didn't think the Catholic Church incorporates paganism?
And the first attempt at distracting from the topic.
I would suspect they are for Catholics. Like the Muslims Catholics get offended when their false religion is exposed.
You really don’t want to play the quote the ECFs do you? You do realize they’re all over the board on these subjects.
Physical, no.
and a roman catholic priest!
Not because it's Protestant but because it is unreasonable.
Paul would go straight to the synagogues and start preaching.
Why not share the truth on this weekend?
But your RC compares believe it was physical ..and THAT is why it is physical now
You missed the key line, “...and sanctified by their adoption into the Church.”
As I’ve said already, I won’t be dragged again into endless arguments over this point, or any other point. We’ve already had literally thousands of threads here over the past 15 years or so and hundreds of thousands of posts on these various topics of doctrine. I could present clear Catholic teaching on the use of statues, holy water, etc, and it would have zero effect, as it has countless other times it’s been seen here. No more time for this arguing. I have family and friends to attend to this weekend.
Have a blessed Easter!
Well did He speak plainly enough for you when He said He was a door? Living water? the vine?
I have also read a lot about the Reformation. I know that when the Catholics were bounced out of their parishes in England, the people who stayed were slowly transformed into Protestants without knowing it for the most part.
The sermons they received were mostly tirades against the Pope, instead of the receiving the Gospel. It was an Anglican bishop who first coined the idea that the Catholic Church was the Whore of Babylon and the Pope was the anti-Christ.
It is rather sad that some people think that they keep needing to fight ancient arguments, instead of seeking peace in the Name of Christ Jesus.
I'm not altogether sure that we should call them "snarky." But this writer ... whoa! It's amazing that questions that were addressed before 1275 are brought up as brand new devastating refutations.
This sort of writing must be aimed at people who don't know Catholic theology.
I am Protestant and disagree with certain doctrines of the Roman Catholic church. That said, I disagree with certain doctrines of many Protestant denominations. I am blessed to sing in a nondenominational men’s choir made up of 60-70 men from 13 denominations, including Catholics. Religion is man-made and is fraught with all the errors that sinful man brings to the table. Therefore, there is bound to be errors in ALL denominations, Protestant, Roman Catholic, Orthodox. The Bible is the final Word.
On this forum I see both RCs and Prots attacking each other. The animus is on both sides and I’ve been known to be a little ‘short’ in my replies at times. Perhaps, each one of us who go by the name of Christ, can temper our comments with grace, measuring our words, seasoning them with salt, so as not to let the devil gain a foothold. I say this to all, including me, as a reminder.
May you have a joyous Easter / Resurrection Sunday!
Actually if you read the text you will see the real reason they walked away.
But first, we need to correct something you said. You imply that all were believers who left Him.
If you read John 6 you will see it notes that not all believed. In John 6:44 Jesus noted: "but there are some of you who do not believe."
And if you read on a bit further you find out the real reason they left Him. And you will see why Peter and the eleven chose to stay with Him.
John 6:60-66
Therefore many of His disciples, when they heard this said, This is a difficult statement; who can listen to it?
61But Jesus, conscious that His disciples grumbled at this, said to them, Does this cause you to stumble?
62What then if you see the Son of Man ascending to where He was before?
63It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing; the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life.
64But there are some of you who do not believe. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe, and who it was that would betray Him.
65And He was saying, For this reason I have said to you, that no one can come to Me unless it has been granted him from the Father.
66As a result of this many of His disciples withdrew and were not walking with Him anymore.
67So Jesus said to the twelve, You do not want to go away also, do you?
68Simon Peter answered Him, Lord, to whom shall we go? You have words of eternal life.
69We have believed and have come to know that You are the Holy One of God.
Those questions were argued endlessly on the 40,000-posts thread a few years back. I recall you were there, along with the rest of your anti-Catholic crew. Not only that thread, but the hundreds or even thousands of other threads chock full of arguments, attacks, name-calling, and other childish recriminations.
Go back and read all the Catholic teaching plainly presented on those topics. Oh, you don’t have those threads bookmarked? Too bad.
Hope you find time to enjoy some Easter blessings with your family. Really, the FR Religion forum is a lonely place to be on such a glorious and holy weekend. And on that note, goodbye.
Got a Catholic source? I don't think it's physical now. Real, yes. Substantial, yes. But physical? No.
ἡ φύσις (physis/phusis) has to do with things that grow and pass away. The subject matter of physis is 'accidents,'not 'substance.' The weight, dimension, and chemical composition of a thing are not the "substance" of the thing. That's a modern use of "substance" and incompatible with the word's use in Eucharistic theology.
So I'd like to see a source in which a Catholic of any familiarity with doctrine says it is now physical.
