History of the Papacy, Ping!
Real history ping
Somebody ought to tell Paul that he was wrong in chastising the First pope about sacrificed meats.
I mean, really?
Who does Paul think he is to teach “Il Papa” about Jesus!
Not really. He is not The Rock. Jesus is.
I see that you apparently don’t believe in Scripture.
Fake History Re-written Ping!
Peter was mentioned first because he was the most flamboyant impetuous character of the lot. Mark 9:34 would indicate Peter was not the greatest. After all, he was first in EVERYTHING!. Galatians 2:11 Paul did not bow to any authority that Peter had. Peter denied his Lord three times! There is no record that any of the other Apostles considered Peter grater than themselves or any voting of a papal coronation. No record of any extra title (Pope) given to Peter. Peter was the “little stone” and Jesus will always be The Rock!
MamaB not only believes the Scripture, she reads it for herself!
Who are you to speak for her? PapaB?
What he said is the truth. I have been reading the Bible ever since I learned to read about 1951. If I do not complain about a post, no one else should either.
Peter was first just because he was the most flamboyant??? LOL, that makes a lot of sense.
This is the kind of nonsense people resort to in order to deny the truth of Catholic doctrine.
Augustine, sermon: "Christ, you see, built his Church not on a man but on Peter's confession. What is Peter's confession? 'You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.' There's the rock for you, there's the foundation, there's where the Church has been built, which the gates of the underworld cannot conquer. John Rotelle, O.S.A., Ed., The Works of Saint Augustine , © 1993 New City Press, Sermons, Vol III/6, Sermon 229P.1, p. 327
Upon this rock, said the Lord, I will build my Church. Upon this confession, upon this that you said, 'You are the Christ, the Son of the living God,' I will build my Church, and the gates of hell shall not conquer her (Mt. 16:18). John Rotelle, Ed., The Works of Saint Augustine (New Rochelle: New City, 1993) Sermons, Volume III/7, Sermon 236A.3, p. 48.
Chrysostom (John) [who affirmed Peter was a rock, but here not the rock in Mt. 16:18]: Therefore He added this, 'And I say unto thee, Thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church; that is, on the faith of his confession. Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Saint Matthew, Homily LIIl; Philip Schaff, Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers (http://www.ccel.org/ccel/schaff/npnf110.iii.LII.html)
I’m still not getting your point here. Are you saying that without Peters confession there wouldn’t be any Church? Peter and Peters confession alone is the sole foundation of Gods Church? Noone elses. It didn’t matter if the other 11 Apostles confessed, Jesus needed Peter to confess or He just wasted a trip down here?
Does Mama B read Aramaic? or Koine Greek? What are her qualifications for interpreting these ancient languages?
I'm sure she has a Bible wrote in English. That's what I have. It was interpreted for her. Is that okay with you?
Fr. Rotelle was a post VC II modernist. He was involved with the Churchs liturgical reform, which included the translation of texts for the Sacramentary and the Liturgy of the Hours, and worked on the International Committee on English in the Liturgy (ICEL). The same ICEL which deliberately mistranslated the Words of the Consecration.
Nice try, but no cigar.
Why was Peter questioned about going to the Gentile Cornelius by the Jerusalem church leaders?
Why did JAMES, not Peter, make the decision to allow Gentiles NOT to be circumcised?
Why did PETER fear those who came from James when he ate, then separated himself and the Jewish believers from the Gentile Christians?
Why did JAMES make the demand that Paul go to the Temple and offer Animal Sacrifices with other Jewish men who had a vow on their heads?
Why did not the Jerusalem Church led by JAMES entreat for PAUL in Prison?
Who died and made JAMES the ruler of the Hebrew Church?
Thank you, MamaB, for posting your interpretation based on reading scripture in English. Why, dear friend, do you suppose Jesus changed the name of Simon to Cephas (Peter)? Why was he singled out from the other disciples? Did Jesus change the names of any other disciples? What does the name Cephas mean? Thank you for sharing your insight with us.
