Supreme Court Decision On Marriage “A Tragic Error” Says President Of Catholic Bishops’ Conference
USCCB ^ | 6-26-15 | Joseph Kurtz

Posted on 06/26/2015 9:23:22 AM PDT by markomalley

WASHINGTON—The U.S. Supreme Court decision, June 26, interpreting the U.S. Constitution to require all states to license and recognize same-sex “marriage” “is a tragic error that harms the common good and most vulnerable among us,” said Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz of Louisville, Kentucky, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB).

The full statement follows:

Regardless of what a narrow majority of the Supreme Court may declare at this moment in history, the nature of the human person and marriage remains unchanged and unchangeable. Just as Roe v. Wade did not settle the question of abortion over forty years ago, Obergefell v. Hodges does not settle the question of marriage today. Neither decision is rooted in the truth, and as a result, both will eventually fail. Today the Court is wrong again. It is profoundly immoral and unjust for the government to declare that two people of the same sex can constitute a marriage.

The unique meaning of marriage as the union of one man and one woman is inscribed in our bodies as male and female. The protection of this meaning is a critical dimension of the “integral ecology” that Pope Francis has called us to promote. Mandating marriage redefinition across the country is a tragic error that harms the common good and most vulnerable among us, especially children. The law has a duty to support every child’s basic right to be raised, where possible, by his or her married mother and father in a stable home.

Jesus Christ, with great love, taught unambiguously that from the beginning marriage is the lifelong union of one man and one woman. As Catholic bishops, we follow our Lord and will continue to teach and to act according to this truth.

I encourage Catholics to move forward with faith, hope, and love: faith in the unchanging truth about marriage, rooted in the immutable nature of the human person and confirmed by divine revelation; hope that these truths will once again prevail in our society, not only by their logic, but by their great beauty and manifest service to the common good; and love for all our neighbors, even those who hate us or would punish us for our faith and moral convictions.

Lastly, I call upon all people of good will to join us in proclaiming the goodness, truth, and beauty of marriage as rightly understood for millennia, and I ask all in positions of power and authority to respect the God-given freedom to seek, live by, and bear witness to the truth.

Comment: a surprisingly good statement. It would have been a far better statement had he, his conferees, and their clergy uniformly and regularly written and preached and (in cases like the CRS scandal that recently erupted) acted like state-sanctioned sodomy was the grave evil that it is.

But at least he said this much. I was actually concerned that the sole objection would have been that it hurt religious liberty or the like...

By the way, Archbishop, rather than citing new age concepts like integral ecology, why don't you cite the Scriptures, the Church Fathers, and Doctors of the Church?

please

The Catholic Church has already called for World Government and communism. Does it really take a scientist to tell them what happens if they got those

This would have more meaning if they would try to switch the Catholic vote from the pro-gay marriage democrat party, over to the republican party.

But they don’t do that.

And why didn’t the Church fight more vigorously against the calumny? The Church has been a lion on abortion, but a lamb regarding same-sex “marriage.” And now, here we are.

So will the RCC excommunicate Roberts, Kennedy, and Sotomayor for their heresy in codifying sodomite marriage and setting the groundwork to force the Pope to recognize it?

That's a good one. Will Satan excommunicate Satan? Probably not.

“Tragic Error ... Catholic church shocked, shocked I tell you ... the pain, the pain”.

This thread is almost as lame as (Weakly Standard) “Republicans to the rescue!” below.

Encourage my eye.

Try EXCOMMUNICATE. Whoever votes for, participates in, condones, attends, is OUT. PERIOD.

Yeah, let’s freaking write encyclicals about air conditioning while the founding fathers of Hell draw up the constitution of the United States of Gomorrica.

I am beyond furious at the bishops right now.

Do enlighten us medieval fish eaters as to when and where the Church called for communism...?

“Inequality is the root of social evil”

pretty much denounces capitalism:

Pope on Climate Change:

capitalism is a “magical conception” that is a ruse to allow excess consumption

need a new world order to enforce “sustainable” growth

Roberts voted with the minority. At least you could get that right.

Why do you think the SCOTUS' vile decision would "force" the Pope to blow his nose, much less "force" him to recognize fictional "marriage"?

This is one of the [least] great things about FReepers. They don't need no stinkin' friends, except for the absolutely perfect on every issue.

People who actually want to win accept support from every quarter. People who want to win, and have the skill and cunning to do so, learn to make the most of that support, no matter how fragile or thin.

ALL of the Justices who voted in the minority today were Catholics --ALL OF THEM -- and yet the Anti-Catholic Bigot FReeper Faction is out in force calling the Catholic Church "Satan" and "communist".

That's a nice example of exactly why conservatives have lost this country.

What exactly is he trying to say here?

GOP leadership, Republicans.
Holy Roman Church leadership, Catholics.

Critical posts almost always attack leadership—the decision to allow communion for abortionists, illegal aliens, “global warming”, Pope Frank, etc.—not church members, who (if not Demoncrats) tend to be conservative like the Justices who voted against this social, legal and economic travesty.

Lighten up Francois.

Pope on Climate Change:

I know that this is a difficult thing to do, but try and wrap your brain around the following concept:

the utterings of any individual Catholic (be he Pope Francis or Father Phleger) do not constitute the precepts and teachings of the Catholic Church at large...so, again, do please inform us where the Church itself preaches and teaches communism...we mackeral snappers would be forever in your debt...
