How to Go to Heaven

May 12, 2015 |

Sometimes people make it sound like the Catholic understanding of how to get to heaven is really complex.

It’s not.

While you can go into any of Christ’s teachings in a lot of very rich detail, he made sure that this one can be understood even by a child.

I can summarize it in two sentences.

The two sentences are these: To come to God and be saved, you need to repent, have faith, and be baptized. If you commit mortal sin, you need to repent, have faith, and go to confession.

That’s it. That’s all there is to it. And we can show each of these things from the Bible.

The need to repent is shown by the fact that, right at the beginning of his ministry, Jesus began preaching the gospel, saying “repent and believe in the gospel” (Mark 1:14-15).

The need for faith is shown when the author of the letter to the Hebrews writes that “Without faith it is impossible to please him. For whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him” (Heb. 11:6).

And the need for baptism is shown when St. Peter flatly tells us: “Baptism now saves you” (1 Peter 3:21).

So that’s what you need to do if you want to come to God and be saved: Repent, have faith, and be baptized.

If you do these things, you’ll be in a state of grace, and as long as you remain in a state of grace, you’ll go to heaven.

But we still have free will, and we can still turn our backs on God and fall from grace, to use St. Paul’s phrase (Galatians 5:4).

St. Paul is very clear about the possibility of us committing mortal sin. He tells us: “Do not be deceived; neither the immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor robbers will inherit the kingdom of God” (1 Corinthians 6:9-10).

To turn away from God and commit mortal sin is the opposite of repenting. So when we fall into mortal sin, we need to turn back to God—to repent again.

We also need to have faith.

And then we need to go to confession. This is something Jesus indicated just after he rose from the dead. He came to his disciples, breathed on them, and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained” (John 20:22-23)

So Jesus empowered his ministers to forgive or retain sins. In order for a priest to know whether he is to forgive or retain a sin, he needs to know about the sin and whether we have repented of it. That means we need to go and tell him these things, and so we have the sacrament of confession.

So that’s what you need to do. To come to God and be saved, you need to repent, have faith, and be baptized. If you commit mortal sin, you need to repent, have faith, and go to confession.

It’s all thoroughly biblical.

That is all this feels like! You bully us. You argue with us.

I was always told I would be persecuted for being a Christian be never knew what that meant UNTIL I became a Catholic and all I have been is persecuted! By other so called Christians like you!!! Do you have any idea how you come across? I know enough to know Jesus was not like this.

Jesus is God with Us. His Spirit is author of not just the Universe (John 1:) but the Old and New Testament. He is The Word made flesh Who dwelt among us. He used the Apostles and other inspired letter writers to issue the New Testament for our instruction. But if you don’t believe The Spirit of God is the actual author of the New Testament, well then it will be difficult to get any further in discussion. The Spirit of God is raising up His children int he way that they should go, by the direct indwelling of His Spirit. His Spirit is able to cause The Truth of what The Word of God (the Bible) declares to grow His nature in you and me. So Jesus continues to teach and work in us via His Words, regardless of whom it is that wrote them down.

Really When my son is ordained in a few years all the area pastors will attend the service They will lay hands on him and pray for his ministry we are not catholic

Unfortunate that you are not Catholic...a little more study and a little more seeking the ENTIRE truth of Christianity and he would become a priest.

Protestantism is either an erroneous or incomplete version of what is truly Christianity.

I John 4:16. If you see any brother or sister commit a sin that does not lead to death

reckon how the early recipients of John's letter knew which sins lead to death, unless those sinners had mortally died? Maybe the writings of the apostles list those mortal sins, and they had that list handy? Too bad they did not record it in holy writ for all to see. :(

Could it be that what you ‘feel’ is not me or my presence? I’m a little old round man in East Tennessee. It is impossible for me to bully you from my wheelchair here. The ‘feelings’ are perhaps sourced in some other relationship?

That has nothing to do with men classifying sin to make themselves feel better about themselves.

I don’t expect to “win” anything. I’m just tired of having my faith trashed.

Good heavens I can’t even fight the abortion war here in my town because I can’t get churches to unite!!! It’s always something. Then when they find out I’m Catholic oh that ends it right there! They are afraid I’d pull a Hail Mary on them or something. They treat me like I’m a retard (no offense to those with Trisomy 21) Like I don’t know who Jesus is, don’t know the Bible, I mean OH PLEASE!!

I could go on but I might offend a few here so I’ll just leave it at that and let you understand some things from my point of view.

Disagreement is not persecution I have been told by many of the Catholics here if I am not catholic I am not saved and been told that in a rather nasty fashion even that is not persecution

There is a genuine disagreement on lot of principles between Catholics and Protestants Frank discussion of the differences is not persecution or bullying Persecution would be burning your house down or getting you fired from your job or even killing you A lot of our brothers are facing real persecution It minimizes their suffering to call bring disagreed with on an Internet forum persecution

....”When Jesus spoke to Nicodemus He referred to being born of the water from the womb”....

Yes, exactly... Just before a woman gives birth her “water breaks”....thus we are born of water...a physical birth...”that which is born of the flesh”

Jesus was speaking to Nicodemus of a “spiritual birth”...born from above”....’You must be born again to enter into his kingdom”....

....”cussing out your golf shot is not that serious an offense....committing adultery....remarriage after divorce for example, is a much more serious offense”.....

Who determines which sins are worse and less? ..and what they are? Is there a specific list to go by?

Let’s say it’s the sin of Pride.....how far must one go in being Proud for it to be called one or the other degree of sin?

When are you going to pluck out your eye(s) and cut off your hand(s)?

Get back to me when you take the words of Jesus seriously.

Yep. And Jesus spoke of ‘living water’ and those in whom He puts this ‘living water’ will not only never thirst (spiritually speaking, as in divine metaphor) but from whom will flow rivers of this living water! John &:37-39

But you see, I am a priest, because the first "pope" told me so! I don't need a "priest" of the RCC!

1 peter 2:5 you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.

So what should I believe, the oral tradition handed down, or the very words written by Peter?

Morgana,

This was an open thread, with the title “How to Go to Heaven”. Since it was not a caucus thread, it should be open for debate by all. Disagreeing is not bullying.

And if you look at this thread, there is plenty of hostility on both sides.

I’m not fond of it. I would like to contend for the faith without being contentious, but I don’t like it if I am accused of bullying for speaking what I believe is true. Nor do I enjoy being accused of not being a Christian.

As I have told you in the past, I appreciate your passion for the pro-life threads. It is an area of common agreement, and I hope you continue with it.

Grace and peace,
K51

I said before the only common ground you and I have is to agree to disagree

Agree and disagree only pertains to controversial issues...if I tell you that Earth is a planet in the solar system...you can disagree all you wish, it changes nothing.

The Catholic church has been on Earth for 2,015 years and has guided mankind through extraordinary difficulties. Christ promised that He would be with her until the end of time and so far, He is doing just fine......about 1,60 years after He formed His church, certain dissidents came along and decided to change the rules....O.K., I guess, but to use their misguided statements and misinterpretation of the Bible as the basis of your disagreements with me is ludicrous at best.

Will we disagree...maybe, but I am right.

My plan is sleeker and hipper though, so it should be a hit with the kids. It’s a spiritual “Deal-a-Meal” but with a smartphone app!
