Going into a bit more detail as I understand it.

Thomas Jefferson’s letter to the Danbury Baptists was as a result of their concern about hearing how the federal government was planning on establishing a national Christian religious denomination. TJ said that the 1st amendment prohibited the Feds from establishing a national denomination Christian religion, that it creates a separation of church and state at the federal level; but not at the individual state level. At the individual state level this wasn’t being addressed by TJ, and it was already accepted that at the individual state level the states could and did have state sponsored Christian denomination religions. And, also interestingly, most states had a required oath of office that included an oath about their belief in being a Christian and accepting the Bible as their sole source of religion and understanding.
