More likely, Russia is controlling the flow of natural gas from the Persian Gulf to Europe, through Iraq and Syria.
It’s a pretty good trade: Assad gets to keep his head. Russia controls the gas to Europe.
I know I sound cynical, but this has so little to do with religion, and a helluva lot more to do with who controls the heat in Berlin.
I would be willing to lay money that Putin not only knows that Obama is a Muslim, but that he knows exactly what flavor(s) of Muslim Obama & co-president Jarrett are.
Of course, a good chess player like Putin would be very careful NOT to share information like that with the American peasantry.

Russia isn’t doing anything in Syria for religious reasons. The government and dictator Russia supports is not Christian. Syria is officially a Muslim nation with an Alawite dictator. Out of all the bombing raids the Russians have done so far only TWO have been against ISIS. If the insurgents against Syria and Assad were all Christians - even Orthodox Christians - the Russians would still have sold Syria all the hardware, all the weapons it could use against them. And Russia might even now be bombing those very same Christians if that was necessary. Do you doubt for a second that Russia would side with Muslim Chechnya against Georgia is the Georgians invaded? Russia will protect its client states against Christians just as it protects Assad against EVERYBODY.
The Russians had no compunction about invading Orthodox Georgia or Orthodox Ukraine when it suited them.
