God commanded Moses to teach all of Israel a song which amounted to a prophecy of the entire future of the children of Israel, from their occupation of the Land all of the way to the very last days. The fact that all Israel knew this song, confirms the personal responsibility of each Israelite, as these events unfolded, to either defect or to stay true to God.Israel knew what would happen, if they had just listened to Moses.

* First of all the song recounts the blessing and special benefits God bestowed upon the miracle nation, whom He affectionately calls “Jeshurun”, (Upright One).

For the Lord’s portion is his people; Jacob is the lot of his inheritance. He found him in a desert land, and in the waste howling wilderness; he led him about, he instructed him, he kept him as the apple of his eye. As an eagle stirreth up her nest, fluttereth over her young, spreadeth abroad her wings, taketh them, beareth them on her wings: So the Lord alone did lead him, and there was no strange god with him.(Deuteronomy 32:9-12)

But the song makes clear that in spite of the privileges and blessings, “Jeshurun” would corrupt himself, by idolatry. The tendency towards idolatry would prove to be intractable, in spite of may deliverances and blessings. The real underlying sin is exposed, they “forgot God” and “Lightly esteemed Him”.

But Jeshurun waxed fat, and kicked: thou art waxen fat, thou art grown thick, thou art covered with fatness; then he forsook God which made him, and lightly esteemed the Rock of his salvation. They provoked him to jealousy with strange gods, with abominations provoked they him to anger. They sacrificed unto devils, not to God; to gods whom they knew not, to new gods that came newly up, whom your fathers feared not. Of the Rock that begat thee thou art unmindful, and hast forgotten God that formed thee.(Deuteronomy 32:14-18)

* Now the LORD would punish Idolatry, at times by withholding rain, at other times by allowing enemies to be raised up such as the philistines, Amalekites, Moabites and Edom. Israel would turn away from their idols when their troubles humbled them, and would call upon God who in mercy would forgive them and restore them to himself.

And when the Lord saw it, he abhorred them, because of the provoking of his sons, and of his daughters. And he said, I will hide my face from them, I will see what their end shall be: for they are a very froward generation, children in whom is no faith.(Deuteronomy 32:19-20)

* But Moses predicted a terrible and unbearable punishment to come upon them, for their continued unbelief and disobedience; God would for a season “hide his face from them”. The Aaronic blessing, which was ordained and composed by God himself, asked that “The LORD would make his face to shine…”upon the worshippers,(Israel). To have the privilege of God’s face, ( i.e. attention, favor and concern) is the summation of all of the blessing heaped upon this miracle nation. For God to hide his face from them would be a disaster.

* Furthermore the Song which God told Moses to teach to all of Israel included the fact that God would turn(for a season) from the People that he created for himself, to an ignorant non-people, to provoke them to jealousy as their idols provoked Him to jealousy! God would turn and bless a pathetic people with no covenants, privileges, knowledge of God, nor rights to Him, beggars, lame, blind and halt! This has been fulfilled because the Messiah Jeshua has brought into the knowledge of the Jewish God, millions of gentiles from all walks of life, reading the Jewish scripture, worshipping the Jewish God, naming their children Matthew, Ezra, Isaiah and Elijah!

They have moved me to jealousy with that which is not God; they have provoked me to anger with their vanities: and I will move them to jealousy with those which are not a people; I will provoke them to anger with a foolish nation.( Deuteronomy 32:21)

* Furthermore Moses taught through this Divinely inspired song, that Israel would have to undergo periods of Divine wrath, including exile, scattering among the nations, to the ends of the earth and relentless persecution which cannot naturally be explained.

For a fire is kindled in mine anger, and shall burn unto the lowest hell, and shall consume the earth with her increase, and set on fire the foundations of the mountains. I will heap mischiefs upon them; I will spend mine arrows upon them. They shall be burnt with hunger, and devoured with burning heat, and with bitter destruction: I will also send the teeth of beasts upon them, with the poison of serpents of the dust. The sword without, and terror within, shall destroy both the young man and the virgin, the suckling also with the man of gray hairs. (Deuteronomy 32:22-25)

This is a poetic description of the evils which would be heaped upon Israel in her apostasy and rebellion, when the time of God’s long forbearance had come to an end, and there was no repentance on the part of the chosen people. God taught the people of Israel to sing of the coming wrath, it was part of the national catechism, the Song of Moses, the warning of future apostasy and wrath.

But Moses predicted that the nation would remain intact and not be annihilated inspite of the miseries and scattering which Israel endured. There would always be an Israel.

I said, I would scatter them into corners, I would make the remembrance of them to cease from among men: Were it not that I feared the wrath of the enemy, lest their adversaries should behave themselves strangely, and lest they should say, Our hand is high, and the Lord hath not done all this. For they are a nation void of counsel, neither is there any understanding in them. … … (Deuteronomy 32:26-30)

* In this stanza of the Song of Moses, the LORD assures that He would not totally obliterate His prodigal and rebellious son; partly because He knows that the human enemies of the LORD and of Israel would boast in the total defeat of their foe, thinking that they themselves (and their false gods) had brought the destruction of God’s people to pass, and also out of a broken-hearted yearning and a purpose to restore the prodigal, in the last days.

The rendering, “I would scatter them into corners…”, is better rendered, “I would scatter them like the wind…” or “I would blow them away…”, i.e. “I would make an utter end of them…”.

* The last Stanza of the Song of Moses takes us to the end, the “Day of Vengeance” of our God upon the gentiles, who had furthered Israel’s miseries in her affliction.

Is not this laid up in store with me, and sealed up among my treasures? To me belongeth vengeance and recompence; their foot shall slide in due time: for the day of their calamity is at hand, and the things that shall come upon them make haste. ( Deuteronomy 32:33-34)

We have arrived at the last stanza of the Song of Moses. It is thoroughly apocalyptic.

Moses predicted that this would eventually bring the wrath of God upon the wayward nation and He would scatter them to the very ends of the earth. But the LORD would never make an absolute end of Israel, as He will soon with her enemies.

. The Glory of His name is bound to the Jews, the LORD will not allow His name to be debased among the heathen, Why should the heathen say that the Lord brought them out of Egypt to destroy them? The LORD has been using the surrounding nations as a scourge of His people, but as Zechariah said, They have taken it further than HE wanted them to.

…Thus saith the Lord of Hosts, I am jealous for Jerusalem and for Zion with a great jealousy. And I am very sore displeased with the heathen that are at ease: for I was but a little displeased, and they helped forward the affliction.(Zechariah 1:14-15 )

Therefore His purpose is to preserve the nation, and to reconstitute them in the last days, and to bring Israel to repentance after a long night of “Jacob’s trouble”. In the process The LORD has been preparing a judgment for His adversaries, who hated and persecuted Israel all these centuries. This is the meaning of the “great Tribulation” such as never seen before nor shall it ever be seen in this manner again!

Is not this laid up in store for me and sealed up among my treasures?

* Moses saw that at the end of time, in the day of God’s judgment on the nations, Israel would be in a very powerless and vulnerable position before the nations of the World. All of her lovers are gone, and the nations gather to attack her, and to lay waste and destroy her…

For the Lord shall judge his people, and repent himself for his servants, when he seeth that their power is gone, and there is none shut up, or left. And he shall say, Where are their gods, their rock in whom they trusted, Which did eat the fat of their sacrifices, and drank the wine of their drink offerings? let them rise up and help you, and be your protection. See now that I, even I, am he, and there is no god with me: I kill, and I make alive; I wound, and I heal: neither is there any that can deliver out of my hand.(Deuteronomy 32:36-39)

When He sees that she is without strength…

Moses saw (and taught) that the Messiah comes at the end as a Messianic avenger. For I lift up my hand to heaven, and say, I live for ever. If I whet my glittering sword, and mine hand take hold on judgment; I will render vengeance to mine enemies, and will reward them that hate me. I will make mine arrows drunk with blood, and my sword shall devour flesh; and that with the blood of the slain and of the captives, from the beginning of revenges upon the enemy. Rejoice, O ye nations, with his people: for he will avenge the blood of his servants, and will render vengeance to his adversaries, and will be merciful unto his land, and to his people.(Deuteronomy 32:40-43)

According to the Song of Moses, the Intervention of the LORD against Israel’s enemies comes at the end. It comes at a time when the besieged nation has lost all strength to resist her bloodthirsty enemies, and are in danger of being annihilated. Jerusalem itself shall be taken, and plundered according to the prophet Zechariah.

Behold, the day of the Lord cometh, and thy spoil shall be divided in the midst of thee. For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city. Then shall the Lord go forth, and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle.(Zechariah 14:1-3)

Then shall the LORD go forth and fight…

Look at the history of the miracle nation and see that everything Moses taught them at the beginning, in national song, has come to pass. We have seen Israel’s national apostasy, The total and complete universal scattering of the nation in 70Ad, the pervasive mystery of anti-semitism, the return to the land after two thousand years, and now the gathering of the nations to annihilate her. All that remains is the Messianic avenger. Maranatha!

Someone mix up some notes to make it easy on the ears and to remember, we can all sing it on one glorious day.

Human nature aka sin nature will always choose evil unless God intervenes with His Mighty Spirit and draws someone out. That is the lesson. There is none that seek after God even in the best of conditions on their own with their degenerated will. God must save and God alone. For His own purposes He chooses those He will for His own purposes and design.
