Pope Francis has called on Catholic leaders to seek a ban on the death penalty exclaiming that 'Thou shall not kill applies to the guilty as well as the innocent'.
Speaking to thousands at St. Peter's Square, in the Vatican, the Pontiff asked politicians around the world to make 'a courageous and exemplary gesture' during the Church's current Holy Year.
He said: 'I appeal to the consciences of those who govern to reach an international consensus to abolish the death penalty...

Three forms of punishment in the Bible are flogging, financial retribution and capital punishment. The Pope is wrong.
Next the pope will denounce life sentences for murderers.
What did they do right after given the commandments? They slaughtered every living thing in a city they conquered.
I’d say he’s right in line with Catholic teaching.

2267 Assuming that the guilty party’s identity and responsibility have been fully determined, the traditional teaching of the Church does not exclude recourse to the death penalty, if this is the only possible way of effectively defending human lives against the unjust aggressor.
If, however, non-lethal means are sufficient to defend and protect people’s safety from the aggressor, authority will limit itself to such means, as these are more in keeping with the concrete conditions of the common good and more in conformity to the dignity of the human person.
Today, in fact, as a consequence of the possibilities which the state has for effectively preventing crime, by rendering one who has committed an offense incapable of doing harm - without definitely taking away from him the possibility of redeeming himself - the cases in which the execution of the offender is an absolute necessity “are very rare, if not practically nonexistent.”68

Pope should take in a few criminals.
True.
On the other hand, the death penalty removes souls from the pool of those that may be saved to spend eternity with God - something He wants of even the vilest sinners. Jonah found that out when he decided that those in Nineveh were too evil to deserve being saved and God insisted that he go....
But, first, tear down the Vatican City walls and let all the savages in.

Jesus himself confirms that the Law condemns “murder”, not putting criminals to death, which the Bible commands:
“Whoso sheddeth man’s blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he man.” (Genesis 9:6)
This predates the Law of Moses. And it has never been abolished. It’s still in effect.
The “Pope” doesn’t know the Bible.
Maybe he needs to be preaching that to the people on death row for MURDER.
The death penalty is not instant. Before the death penalty is carried out, there is plenty of time for the condemned to realize the truth. In the Bible, the thief on the cross was saved during his execution.
this pope is causing his flock to shrink exponentially.
Add that God ordered the Israelite’s to kill people.
Correct again. The Greek word “phoneuseis” in verse 17 unambiguously translates as “murder”.
If God is against the death penalty why did He pay it for us?

States have the right and obligation to protect their populace from murderers.
He IS entitled to his opinion since he isn't speaking of DOGMA.
This shows a shocking lack of knowledge of theology on the part of the pope. The same God that gave the commandment “Thou shall not kill (commit murder)” also ordered the Israelites to kill all of the inhabitants of Canaan, to kill entire nations, to kill adulterers and homosexuals... So obviously, that commandment does not say we are never to take a human life, but we are not to take an innocent human life (commit murder).
francis/frances seems to a bit selective in the way he intrprets things.
