ROME Leaders of gay Catholic groups on Monday praised Pope Francis for saying that all Christians and the Roman Catholic Church owed an apology to gays for previous mistreatment, even as the groups called on the church to take more concrete steps to repudiate past teachings and condemn anti-gay violence.
Streaking across the sky on Sunday night in his papal airliner, returning from a visit to Armenia, Francis also visibly winced, momentarily overcome with emotion, when a journalist, Cindy Wooden, mentioned the recent attack at an Orlando gay nightclub and noted that Christians are sometimes blamed for stigmatizing homosexuals.
Francis did not directly address the Orlando killings. But he endorsed a comment of one of his top advisers who, soon after the Orlando attack, said that the church had marginalized gay people and should apologize.
The pope said the church must not only apologize to a gay person it offended, but we must apologize to the poor, to women who have been exploited, to children forced into labor.
Marianne Duddy-Burke, executive director of DignityUSA, a leading organization of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Catholics, said the popes remarks represented a powerful statement, if not enough.
For a pope to acknowledge that the church has done so much damage to gay people, and that we deserve an apology, is an unprecedented act of humility, she said in a telephone interview. But a statement of remorse is only as good as the change in behavior that follows.
Franciss outreach toward gays has been part of his broader effort to welcome people who have felt marginalized by the church. He made global headlines early in his papacy when he signaled a new openness toward gays when he famously uttered, Who am I to judge?
Francis words raised hopes among some gay.....

Catechism of the Catholic Church
2357 Homosexuality refers to relations between men or between women who experience an exclusive or predominant sexual attraction toward persons of the same sex. It has taken a great variety of forms through the centuries and in different cultures. Its psychological genesis remains largely unexplained. Basing itself on Sacred Scripture, which presents homosexual acts as acts of grave depravity, tradition has always declared that "homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered." They are contrary to the natural law. They close the sexual act to the gift of life. They do not proceed from a genuine affective and sexual complementarity. Under no circumstances can they be approved. |
i know what they probably want. The Pope made a huge mistake bordering on heresy.
The demons are having a field day under this pope.
Id actually like to apoligize to Catholic s that the pope is a moron
Hell with the Catechism; he’ll have to revise every part of the Bible, Old and New Testaments, that universally denounce homosexuality in the strongest terms possible. Indeed, Romans 1 does a clinically precise job of explaining the whole homosexual situation, one that hasn’t changed in the last 2,000 years, regardless of the SCOTUS nitwits.
He didn’t say to repudiate past teachings. Typical media twisting things to fit their agenda.
Repudiate past teachings?
Purge the evil among you? Sounds like the Bible says not to apologize to evil. Think the Pope needs to reread.
The homosexuals are demanding he repudiate Catholic teachings and the Bible).
The pope should reread the catechism. it’s clear he’s forgotten it or worse.
I don’t know why. The Church has given homosexuals free reign in its ranks for years. That is why we straight Catholics have been paying with our donations settlements for years.
Should gays apologize to women for mocking them, and replacing a mother with another father in the family? That would follow the logic.
Truth!
“Death and Destruction are never satisfied, and neither are human eyes.”—Proverbs 27:20
“All who hate me love Death”—the Woman Wisdom, Proverbs 9
I remember a church I went to that once took part in a kind of “apology tour” traveling through the ME asking forgiveness of Muslims for the Crusades. At the time it seemed well meant but it seems now to have been horribly misguided. What is gained by denying truth, whether heavenly or earthly?
Islam proper is antichrist to the max, despite its phony flattery of Jesus. They don’t believe God’s testimony about His Son, THAT’S their problem. Not some unquenched grudge for being beaten back for lustful conquest. The Apostle John cut Mahommed off at the knees before he was born by spelling out who was the liar and the antichrist (1,2,3 John). Mahommed lies GUILTY, and his followers STAND so.
Hopefully many will come to the Lord before time runs out, as it appears to be as we speak.
The shooter in Orlando was Muslim not Christian.
Of all the nonsense surrounding this nightmare of a Pope, this article is a knee slapper! Way to go Pope, give these freaks an inch....how pitiful.
Raise your hand if you are surprised!
“Past Teachings”. You know. Stuff that Jesus said....
Even when they aren't involved, Christians are included in the narrative.
