I agree substantially with what you wrote. I don't think he's the anti-Christ or an anti-pope. He's bad on doctrine, and that makes him --- with all his appealing warm traits --- an almost uniquely dangerous kind of bad pope.

Renaissance popes with flagrant personal vices--- alcohol, money, power, women, God-help-us, handsome young men --- may well be BBQ-ing in hell, but they did far less overall damage because they were frankly worldly men uninterested in "the churchy stuff."

A guy like Pope Francis, intensely interested in pastoral, moral and theological matters -- but off on the wrong track --- is potentially more damaging than a Borgia.

But we should reccgnize when he does right. Isn't this justice? Don't we owe justice to any poor shlub of a sinner, even if he happens to be the pope?

I remember a few years ago, about a third of the Catholic Bishops were willing to go on the record as opposing abortion. The rest were either overtly sympathetic or not willing to take a public stand.

So this really shouldn’t be a surprise.

Certainly one can find pro-life statements from Francis. One can find them from Cupich, also. However, this does not mean that both men don't damage the pro-life cause.

In Francis' case, that damage is usually not caused by statements which directly extol abortion, although his eulogizing of that Italian woman who had been a life-long campaigner for abortion rights, came very close to it. Rather, it''s caused by where he places abortion in the hierarchy of issues which he considers most important. Based purely on the volume of words which he expends and the emphasis which he places on these issues, one is forced to conclude that poverty, unemployment, health care, immigration rights and the environment are more urgent and pressing issues for mankind right now.

Sure, abortion is an issue, but it's not the issue on which civilization as we know it, depends. It's one of many issues with which the Church is concerned. The "seamless garment" by any other name.

When viewed in this light, I'm sure you can see that it's possible for a Catholic to justify voting for a pro-abortion candidate, for instance, if his/her stance on those other issues mentioned above (poverty, health care etc) is in line with Catholic policy and this is why we are so afflicted in the US with bishops and Catholic laity who are in love with Obama and his fellow travelers.

Because they are doing exactly what Bergoglio wants.

It’s necessary to throw some bones out.

And despite those quotes, he has thrown himself into politics and made clear what side he is on. It’s also just not possible to put issues into compartments as if they have nothing to do with each other. They do.

Strange because God has a different idea.

Pope Francis with Italian abortionist Emma Bonino

In a February 8 interview with one of Italy’s most prominent dailies, Corriere Della Serra, Pope Francis praised Italy’s leading proponent of abortion – Emma Bonino -- as one of the nation’s “forgotten greats,” comparing her to great historical figures such as Konrad Adenauer and Robert Schuman. Knowing that his praise of her may be controversial, the Pope said that she offered the best advice to Italy on learning about Africa, and admitted she thinks differently from us. “True, but never mind,” he said. “We have to look at people, at what they do.”

Cardinal Wuerl hamming it up with pro-abort, pro-homo Joe Biden.

Donna Wuerl refuses to enforce canon law 915; yet Francis refused to accept Donna's mandatory letter of resignation on Wuerl's 75th birthday.

And Pope Francis elevated Donna to the Congretation for Bishops, while at the same time removing the truly Catholic Raymond Cardinal Burke from the same.

We don’t know why the Bishops betrayed children in the womb, mothers, and countless pro-lifers who are on the front lines defending life.

Because they aren't Catholic?

Don't want the congregation feeling guilty when the

comes passing by. This goes with other Christian Churches as well. In this day and age of broken families and "sexual liberation" righteous indignation is a no, no.
