Lessons Against Fascination with Evil

September 9, 2016

The video below is a trailer for an upcoming movie. I can’t comment on the full context of the movie (since it hasn’t yet been released), but there are several important messages in the trailer. Allow it to bring forth in you a salutary fear; don’t be fascinated by the cheap parlor tricks of Satan or the Hollywood depiction of them.

Let’s take away four lessons from the trailer.

As the trailer begins, it seems that some scam artists have drawn in gullible people with fake séances and other forms of divination. There are hidden people who speak and make noises in order to convince the “customers” that the dead are actually being contacted.

Lesson One: Never dabble in the occult, even as a ruse or a joke. Those who do so often discover that the spirits they invoke in jest are deadly serious and quite real. Never invoke dark sprits and never seek information from the dead. Evil spirits can and often do masquerade as the souls of the departed; it’s a deception.

As the trailer progresses, things get very ugly. The characters go from lies and ruses (which are sinfully ugly enough) to an encounter with the Father of Lies. One of the characters, noting the abnormal behavior of a young girl asks, “Who are you talking to?” Believe me, you don’t want to know!

Lesson Two: Calling out to the dark world beyond often brings a response, and a very dark one at that.

As the trailer unfolds it seems that things get bad very fast. One of the characters says, “Something is happening that we can’t understand.”

Lesson Three: Satanic powers are masters of deception. All the parlor tricks (levitation, slamming doors, etc.) are meant to incite fear. But the real battleground is the mind and the very subtle deceptions of the Evil One. He subtly takes up the personality of the possessed soul and makes it difficult to understand who is really talking. Indeed, something is happening that is very difficult to understand, except perhaps for a trained exorcist. Even an exorcist enters the battleground with humility and careful discernment, rooted in considering the counsel of others on the team. For this and other reasons, an exorcist should never work alone. He should have an assistant priest and a team to assist him, to observe, to advise him, and to pray.

At one point in the trailer the priest says, “… you’ve opened up a portal.”

Lesson Four: Never open a door to the occult, even in a playful way. Ask not, lest you be answered, seek not lest you be found. Don’t joke or revile evil spirits (cf Jude 1:9). Our only message to them should be this: “In the name of Jesus, the Lord, be gone!”

Keep your eyes on Jesus and the saints. Do not be fascinated by demons or any aspect of darkness.

Movies like this one can incite a salutary fear, but they can also encourage an undue fascination with devilish things. No one who has ever assisted in an exorcism shares any of this fascination at all. Exorcisms are usually lengthy, tedious, and exhausting. There is no dramatic music, and things are never finished in a convenient 90 minutes. It’s an ugly process that weighs heavily on the participants. The demons usually shift quickly from cheap parlor tricks to subtle psychological deception.

If you chose to see this movie, please learn these lessons. Shed any fascination; there is nothing fascinating about evil. It is depressing, dark, and difficult to endure.

Remember that the Lord is more powerful that any satanic force. If you should ever encounter such evil, even through no fault of your own, summon the Lord and repeatedly declare aloud, “Jesus is Lord.” The sacraments, Holy Water, and other sacramentals are also very helpful. Do not panic, just have a salutary fear such that you keep a healthy distance from any dark powers.

Use care when watching this trailer. Let it provide you with information, but don’t let it fascinate you.

I will not look at the trailer, and I stay clear of anything like this. Do not even like reading about exorcisms and such.

Very sad that Hollywood is putting out a movie on this subject, as I know darned well they are doing precisely for the reason of drawing people into exploring the occult. Hollywood is very good at winning souls for satan.

A fascination with the occult, evil and horror, today begins at a young age, and for an odd, and paradoxical reason.

For a very long time it has been known that children who live in horrific circumstances, such as in a war zone, where real horror and tragedy are a part of life, enjoy horror and dark fantasy stories as, oddly enough, an escape from their reality. And such children fully grasp that it is fiction and harmless.

But paradoxically, children who are raised in not just the absence of real world horror, but who are insulated from the *knowledge* of the evil and awful things that truly exists, often are very attracted to it, precisely because of the lie of omission.

The truth leaks out, and it terrifies them that adults are so *afraid* of the truth that they hide it from them, their children. (Often with the mistaken belief that if children are blind to evil, they will not know that it exists, so will not be attracted to it.)

So here we have two seemingly opposite cases, of children who cannot escape from the terror and evil they see about them; and children who cannot escape from the terror and evil they know are there, a nebulous, undefined evil, perhaps far more terrifying, that they crave to understand, not because they are attracted to it, but because they want to know enough to avoid it.

When you see children who dress as “Goths”, all in black with some even wearing white face paint to emulate the morbid “Gothic look”, that descends from the Tuberculosis plague of Europe, what you are seeing is children who are “afraid of the darkness”. It haunts them.

Their redemption begins by telling them of the truth about evil in the world. Evil wrought by men and found in history. Evil men who live today and promulgate oppression, tyranny, dehumanization, starvation, and all manner of cruelties. And have from the dawn of time.

And once you teach them this, the truth denied them, you will find they will drop their morbidity, change their clothing, and you will see the timid souls beneath, ones far more receptive to “the better angels of our nature.”

Very good points made by Msgr. Charles Pope.

I deal with evil on a regular basis. Not because I seek it out. But because it is real and is everywhere. Evil’s greatest power is the influence it gains by people denying its existence. All humans are good. However certain human behavior opens us up to the external influence of evil.

When confronting evil, pray, pray and pray some more. Evil’s greatest enemy is the Light of God. When I encounter an evil spirit, I do not become fearful of it. I actually thank it for reminding me to pray, and say a prayer for it.

If evil is getting to me, then it is time for me to take time out and seek God as I have lost my connection. When evil tried to enter my thoughts, which does happen often especially when reading comments on this forum, I rebuke the thought and cast it away in the name of Jesus.

I’ve cleaned up many messes where teenagers called in spirits using Ouija boards. Most of the spirits are just misguided and really mean no harm, but there are many impostors and imitators trying to fool us as a spirit can present itself to us in any manner it expects us to be vulnerable. They can take on the form of our lost loved ones whom we deeply miss.

I am amazed at the accuracy of many Hollywood films. I did not watch the movie Exorcist as I could never watch any horror movie growing up. I just could not force myself to do it, even to the point of getting up and walking out of them while in college. But after having many exorcisms done through me, I decided to watch the movie. It is very accurate, even mild in comparison to the real experience.

When you are completely filled with God’s Love, you have power over evil as it can not come close to you. It is not you that is doing the work, but God working through you. Always, at all times seek God’s Love through His Son Jesus. Without it we are nothing.

I say all this very humbly as I have made mistakes and got stung several times, and it will most likely happen again. I Love God so much that I trust He will not guide me into a situation unless I am ready for it.. He has rescued me from myself many times. It is a unique situation as your strength to do this work only comes from your own weakness. If you think you are strong, you are actually very weak.

Thank you for posting on this topic as people need to learn about evil. Never seek it out, but also never be afraid of it and run from it. The Lord is your shepherd and you shall fear no evil as you walk through the valley .......

“things are never finished in a convenient 90 minutes”

The only time a session lasted a long time for me was when it was me trying to do the work. I had a demonic spirit keep laughing at me and would not budge from the woman in front of me. This went on and on to the point where I in frustration turned around, threw my arms in the air and gave up. I had never failed in such a situation previously and was very frustrated.

It was my lesson. “I” was trying to do the work. Immediately after I threw my arms in the air and surrendered, God moved in and took over. I turned to the spirit and the words “I hear the fear in your voice and you cannot cover it with your laughter” came out of my mouth. There was dead silence for a period of time and then submission. After some redemption work the spirit was removed to its proper location for further redemptive work.

We are in very interesting times and I am observing evil getting ready for a major offensive in the near future. They are the weeds and we need to wake up.

I agree. A valid point.

Why look at evil and darkness, when there is so much good and satisfaction in the positive aspects of life.

Associate with good honest people and share your love for others. It is amazing the payback from God. Just keep thanking Him.

Look at the work of St Mother Theresa as he spread joy and help to those that she encountered.

People have curiosity, but the old saying curiosity killed the cat.

I watched the trailer.... It’s actually a pretty good warning.

Each time when assisting a dark spirit in leaving a person, I asked it what took place in this person’s life that allowed you to attach. You can’t imagine the childhood traumas that were described in detail to me. Generally children are protected by their radiance of God through them. Trauma shuts that radiance down and leaves them vulnerable. It’s when the sparkle leaves their eyes as the eyes truly are the windows to the soul.

All valid points.

I have many, many cousins. There are 2 of the cousins whom I see every 2 years or so. Each of them are daughters of younger brothers of my father.

None of us still have our parents, but both of these women have lost their mothers within the last 8 years or so. It pains me when they speak of going to a medium to communicate with their mothers. I pray for them.

the video is for the new movie: Enter the circle with the new trailer for “Ouija: Origin of Evil.” It is apparently a “follow on” to 2014’s movie “Ouija.”

Thanks. I don’t need to see this movie, because I learned about Ouija Boards and dark spirits long ago.

“It pains me when they speak of going to a medium to communicate with their mothers. I pray for them.”

I do quite a bit of work with parents who have had children die. Often they will seek out psychics to communicate with their lost children.

The stories are virtually all the same.. your child is ok.. he/she loves you very much....

While the statements they make are often true, the communication is actually more harmful than helpful. The distressed parent will get a temporary “feel good” and as it wears off, they seek out more psychics or the same one over and over as they become addicted to psychics.

The reason for this is that the first stage of the healing process when you lose a loved one is “denial.” Often I will hear someone speak of a lost loved one as though the event happened yesterday when in fact it was many years ago. For many possible reasons, they are stuck in the “denial” phase of the healing process.

The temporary “feel good” from the psychic is from a validation of the denial. They keep the person in the denial stage of healing. Common statements such as “Your child is still here with you” are not healing. A person needs to move through the process to accept the loss and I do not see psychics helping this process. Validation of denial creates a constant repeated validation, and thus the addiction to supposedly remove the pain.

There are other techniques I use that heal the wound almost instantly. I teach workshops on this subject. The pain is real. But so is the healing. The key is to own the pain and move through it, not run from it in denial and keep perpetually returning. Your comment “I pray for them.” is most important as prayer is excellent medicine.

No we’re not which is why our savior died for us...our hearts our deceitful and desperately wicked which is why humans get into the messes we get into!

Our Savior died to save us from our sins. He is saving our souls as He Loves us. He does not Love our sins, but He Loves us.

Always love the child, but do not love the child’s bad behavior.

If it was simply a matter of behavior and ignorance then Christ need not have died... but as our “misbehavour” brought on God’s sentence of death upon men, only our Saviour can save us from the “sting of the grave”. Our sin is “all original” even though an individual otherwise practices the morals of Ghandi!

For all men have sinned and have come short of the glory of God!
